A.little lesson: Famu was the first band PERIODT to dance at halftime ( the earliest you can find is 1952 on KZbin and you won't find ANY band doing it earlier than that) Famu was also the first to do the fast march and death March ( check same video) ......and that video was not the first time FAMU did it.

I must say this for those that aren't aware... we've been doing this (Amination drills, the Rattler/fast march, playing and dancing, etc) a long time and way before Ohio State, Southern, or Bethune Cookman started. They ALL began incorporating those things that were mentioned in comparison to us AFTER we did it for decades. Plenty of black and white or grainy VHS footage to back that up. It's all good people.. some of you are just paying more attention this season.

@bandhead we don't mimic anyone speaking since the Marching 100 was here since 1946. Under our founding director Dr. William P. Foster for 51 years and the succeeding directors were all former Foster students. Dr. Foster wrote a book on Band Pagentry. I recommend you get that book and it will give you some context on many HBCU Bands programs. Most of what HBCU Bands do are based off of innovations and concepts first developed and performed by the Marching 100.

Just a note: Thank you for one of the most balanced responses I've seen from someone who obviously has more exposure to the SWAC. Gotta note that the double-time march originated at FAMU (late 40s/early 50s) - it's not the 100 mimicking Southern. Also, I'd say the dance routine breakdown style is more of a Florida band thing than a BCU-specific dynamic. I definitely agree that the 100 has some work to do in the stands in terms of being more entertaining. However, it SEEMS that one main SWAC requirement for being considered good in the stands is leaning very heavily on upper brass. Barring a few songs, you'll rarely hear that from The 100. I look forward to seeing how The 100's entrance into the SWAC affects both the program and the conference. Whatever happens, I LOVE my HBCU culture. Thank you for your contributions. "Music is a universal language" Dr. William P. Foster started the HBCU band movement in 1946 with the FAMU Marching Band, later known as the Marching "100". The "100" can go toe to toe against any marching band in the world and be appreciated by all cultures because of their diverse repertoire. Because of the band's marching symphonic playing style you'll never have to guess what is beIng performed because the music is ALWAYS CLEAR. This band always play in the natural range for their individual instruments, always with good balance, blend, intonation and characteristic instrument tones. Dr. Foster always wanted his band to be a role model for All Elementary, Middle, Junior and Senior High School Bands.

Southern can't compete with arrangements and the 100 sound is too unique, no other band has that sound. the difference is only 1st or 2nd chair instrumentalist makes the hundred. I'm a graduate of SU and played in the band. Sight reading was unheard of, if you could play a little, you made the band. Not the case at FAMU. The difference is clear.

Hear how those notes connecting through and through God Best sounding and looking band out there

The 100 sounds bete than all bro we do notplay above staff every song fam. Not our style holding notes to full value is how a band suppose to play. Our sound fills stadiums and Domes unlike su and jsu. Percussion over powers the band.then our drills consst of picture drills we say shapes is boring which is true.
