Dr William P Foster created the HBCU halftime show. That’s why the award for Band of the Year was named after him. I marched under Dr Foster FAMU. But I’m sure he would be proud of all the other bands today.

There is only 1 . My son is a Senior Section leader on Bass. Major Journalism. I’ve listened to a lot of negative comments about the FAMU Marching 100 and good comments. I’ve seen the practices and the hard work. Those students work hard and have gone through a lot and they have to keep their grades up. They gave an original sound that is not to be duplicated. They paved the way for a lot of the HBCU Universities. I told my son block out the negative put GOD first in all things. Lead with your instrument and not your mouth. No matter what there will always be negativity from some people. Positivity is what’s important. We are not looking at these non HBCU Colleges that are doing a lot of what the HBCU Colleges are doing. Stay woke and support one another. Many Blessings 🙏🏽

It really was. No disrespect to the other GREAT HBCU bands, but this field show really showed elements that many of the other HBCU bands lack. The SWAC style is just different and more "blasty", "brassy" (screaming trumpets, lack of balance between brass, percussion and woodwinds) than what FAMU will ever present or desire to be like. That is simply NOT who they are or will ever care to be. I wish they would get a female dance team, BUT that will never happen. They are sticking to what has made them famous and internationally acclaimed for almost 80 years. They are resting on their traditions of being a "marching" band and will never focus on being a hip-hop playing, stand band with those beautiful young ladies dancing. I wish they would get a dance team though -:)

@@chrisstanley349 Many HBCUs say they dance and play, but I have yet to see one play and dance with the sound and intensity that FAMU does. All I see are comments that others do it with NO video evidence to back those claims. Many of them dance during the drum/bass breakdown, but NOT WHILE PLAYING. It is what partly makes the hundred so uniquely representative of the great legacy of Dr. William P. Foster.

@@docwoc7903 Exactly well said. SWAC wants FAMU to be like them. Although they have added some elements for the purposes of the 5th Quarter they will always opt to continue the Legacy for which they were built.

@ it’s really that simple. I have tried to remain respectful in my comments, but risqué dancing girls and blasting/screaming trumpets and brass in the stands does not make for musicianship, and FAMU will never enhance or tarnish(however you want to look at it) its superior legacy and reputation to conform to that. They will always see themselves as the originators of the HBCU band culture; and as they should because simply, historically and factually….THEY ARE! I love the dance teams, and hype stand routines, but FAMU will never focus on that. Ignorantly and erroneously saying they sound “white” or like “DCI” is so uninformed and ignorant to the culture and history of HBCU MARCHING bands. The hyped, “park and bark”, pep/stand band displayed in 5th quarters in this “battle” mentality is entertaining, but should never come at the expense of discipline and collegiate marching band musicianship. When I look at how hard and “huffy” the JSU or SU trumpet players attack their instruments and scream, I’m concerned these young musicians are going to physically injure themselves. The aggression and breathing and jerking their entire bodies to “play” the instrument seems excessive and poorly postured. I’m glad they are having fun, but the differences in style and related opinions only expand the discussion and I am glad and proud of what FAMU has brought to the SWAC.
