I bloody love Warren Zevon. I think he might have been more famous here in the UK than in his home country, though. I get so upset when I hear the amazing opening of 'Werewolves of London' and it turns into that ghastly song about Alabama.
@Hexon663 ай бұрын
@@angelamaryquitecontrary4609 Zevon was immensely popular in America, virtually had a residency with David Letterman's TV show. But he never was a huge pop sensation. I don't think Werewolves would come in the top 10 for most Zevon fans. One of the best (and ironically, worst) things about UK music appreciation is that a lot of great music gets exposed to people.... but an awful lot of junk, too!
@angelamaryquitecontrary46093 ай бұрын
@@Hexon66 Well, that told me! I shall sit in the corner and cry. A while back, BBC Radio 2 (biggest music channel here) asked listeners to suggest the best intro to a song, and Werewolves of London won the poll handsomely. WZ's son spoke on the programme, and said that his father would have loved it, and he also said that HE THOUGHT HIS FATHER WAS MORE POPULAR IN THE UK THAN THE USA! (Capital letter choice, mine.) I'm still in the corner, crying, so I hope you're bloody well sorry, and that you have a better sense of humour than many of your compatriots.

Cory Wells and Danny Hutton, 2 of the 3 dogs night. The only thing they could agree on is how much they blamed Chuck Negron for the disintegration of the band, to the point they wouldn't fly on the same aircraft or even stay in the same hotels when possible. The quote about flying was "If I'm gonna die in a plane crash, it's not gonna be with sonofabitch." Bad money management and trusting the wrong people in the first 15 years of Three Dog left all the band members broke and they continued to play out of necessity.

Just a very important correction: when telling the story about Tears for Fears’ fallout, the narrator jumps straight to 2022 with The Tipping Point relase, but Curt Smith returned to TFF in 2003 to record and release Everybody Loves a Happy Ending along with Orzabal, and stayed in the band ever since doing lots of tours. The story is missing SO MUCH detail.

@@seansullivan7131 They sold more records with Hagar because they morphed into a Top 40 band with a great guitar player that wrote, with a few very notable exceptions, far more generic and less clever songs that brought more girls and more middle-of-the-road fans into the music. Also, the original band came out pre-MTV. By the time Hagar joined Van Halen was far more accessible to a generation that had been too young to appreciate the band in its early years. I've loved Sammy since Montros, and I own all the VH albums with him in the band. But I'd have much preferred Van Halen continue with Roth and Sammy continue with his solo albums.

The way the Wilson sisters treated their ex husbands at the induction ceremony for the Hall of Fame says volumes - those guys are the ones who actually wrote the 70s Heart music - the difference between the MTV yrs and the earlier stuff is painfully obvious - $$ does strange things to people
@jamescaron64653 ай бұрын
They weren't ex husbands, they were boyfriends, but otherwise you are correct. Roget and Mike Fisher wrote the best songs and had the vision for the band. I'm just stunned they didn't copyright the name and service marks so they could not have been summarily dumped without a major legal hassle as they started and named the band.
@marymitchell89863 ай бұрын
I don't know what happened at the ceremony but I can tell you that Ann and Nancy wrote their earlier music when they were in the band. If you look at Dreamboat Annie alone you'll see they wrote on every track. The 80's stuff was a product of record company limitations on creativity, which was stifling great music writers across the board. The Wilson sisters have always had a massive input to Heart since they joined way back.

@@marymitchell8986 They were on the credits, but Roger Fisher wrote the music and Howard Leese handled the arraignments while Mike "flicker" fisher produced I know this because I talked to Howard at length , guitar sound and production, particularly on little queen.
@marymitchell89863 ай бұрын
The sisters were more than simply on the credits, they wrote every single song on Dreamboat Annie and the vast majority of songs on subsequent albums. You make them sound more like helpers than actual contributors to the albums which brought them great success, and major contributors at that. The Wilson sisters brought Heart to the attention of the rock world with their talents and to refute that is just nuts imo. I'm aware of contributions put in by other band members which polished the end product but you only have to look at Heart's discography from any information source to see the massive success and contribution made by the Wilson sisters. I'm intrigued as to what Howard told you in this conversation you say you had with him, something doesn't add up if he's given you the impression that they simply helped while he did all the work. If he was that good then why did the band have such little commercial success before the Wilson sisters joined, food for thought indeed.
@jamescaron64653 ай бұрын
@@marymitchell8986 OK if what you say is true. When why, after the Fisher brothers and Leese left the band, they were FORCED by their record company (after being dropped by Epic, BTW) to hire outside writers to write songs for them) people don't suddenly lose their ability to write song all of a sudden. It just does not happen. Nody is saying they did not contribute nor deserve their share of the writing credits, but to say they were the only ones to write songs. does not add up. In fact there was a documentary on the band where the fisher brothers AND the WIlson sister both said their was a big split at that time where the sisters went off with their friend Sue Ennis to write Dog and Butterfly. That album is very different than the previous two (I could Heartless at more or less a legal bootleg) and then the following album after that was totally different. (it also didn't well very well comparatively nor does it get much airplay compare to the first two). Leese was very precise as to who used what (Fender amps in the studio, Music man live because they required less maintenance for example) down the setting and types of pickups Roger and he used. He was very hands on the production. and knew exactly the sounds they were trying to achieve. WHy did they turn into a hair band in the late 80's ? Remember this trend: First two albums, regarded at their best and gets most airplay. Albums after that, slow decline in sales and airplay until dropped by record label and had to bring in outside writers in order to stay on new label. reinvents into hair band. Here's is a similar trend: best regarded AC/DC albums and gets most airplay. The ones with Bon Scott. The ones regarded and not the best and get the least airplay. The ones without Bon Scott. What's the difference? Bon Scott.
