My bandsaw build has reached a milestone. I have spun it up with a blade on. I fit the tyres, do the motor enclosure, and the left leg extension/enclosure (the one that doesn't need cutting on a bandsaw).
This is the seventh video in a diary series. Next will be the blade guides and more enclosures.

I just love the way you explain the process itself and physics behind! Thank you so much! And I love your "I like to make things for making things more than making things" saying!

John, I am really enjoying this series, thank you very much. Having mused over the plans for a few years, 2017 is the year I'm definitely going to build my own bandsaw. I've started already by cutting out the frame elements although the cold weather is making working in the garage a little unattractive at the moment. I wonder where you obtained the right length bandsaw blade please? My usual supplier, Screwfix, has nothing that long. Thanks in anticipation.

I ordered online, from Tuff Saws. If you're not sure what to get, the chap there is happy to talk over what you're going to be doing and give you some recommendations. I got a 1/4" - SuperTuff Carbon and a 1/2" - SuperTuff Fastcut. All the blades are made to order so you can ask for whatever size you end up needing. Lots of people speak highly of them. www.tuffsaws.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=2

Thanks very much for that helpful info; I was beginning to wonder if the size was perculiarly American/Canadian. Unlike Matthias who seems to have a stock of salvaged motors, your motor looks brand new. Did you source it specially for this project?

The other thing that Canada seems to have in abundance, after maple trees, is discarded furnace motors. No so many induction motors to be found in skips (dumpsters) here. Yes, I got a new motor off eBay. The other consideration was that there were more than enough other things potentially to go wrong that I was happy to use a new motor. The total cost still compares very favourably with the other contenders: a premium bandsaw from Record or Axminster at £800 to £1000.

0.75kw (1 HP). It could have been a little less powerful. ¾ HP would have been enough; and I wouldn't have needed to extend the motor shelf.
