Just bought the pm 1800 the same version of this and yes it’s a beast. So well built and what a step up from 14-15 inch machines. Your video shows a great review and it’s so helpful for us turners to see great machines we should get. I used my gantry crane to lift mine but you definitely need something to lift it with as it’s 900 lbs which of course gives it unparalleled stability. I put it on a bora industrial mobile base just to have the options. Thanks again !

You just taught an old dog a new trick. Thanks beautiful lady. I always just buy a new blade. But after watching this I took a file to my very dirty and dull blade. It cuts like a new one, don't know how long it will last but it got me out of a late night bind. It took me at least 45 minutes to hit all 333 teeth. Love the negative rake used to clean the blade. Wet wood gunk always builds up on the blade, so having a faster way to clean off the gunk is great! I have an old chisel perfect for the job, so my good negative rake (and my skew) can stay at the lathe.

Great info, Ashley~! I upgraded to a Laguna 18BX from my Craftsman Tilt-head bandsaw after almost 25years of use. What a difference~!!! I also learned about the SandFlex blocks this year (thanks to Rob Cosman). So much easier than the way I've been cleaning my tool surfaces. I love the tip on cleaning and sharpening the bandsaw blade. I've not had to sharpen one yet, since I use mine a lot less than you do, but great to know for when I do. Love your work and your channel~!! ...AND, thank you for the new line I'll use to tell my friends about saving to buy good tools the first time around..."If you buy nice tools, you only cry once." This little band saw has turned out to be the best tool purchase I've ever made kzbin.infoUgkx5ZrqmYO2uJq_nuU8TopyWxVzn8vqmPUL Once doing the set-up as per the included suggestions, this table top tool has been my go-to saw ever since (8 months as of this review). There are few things I wouldn't attempt with this saw. It takes up much less space than my table saw yet delivers twice as much punch. I've used it to create slices of wood no thicker than an 1/16th of inch by using the POWERTEC BS900RF Rip Fence. For small shop projects this tool can't be beat.

I usually use a piece of 2x4 with a sheet of 400 wet dry sand paper to clean my saws. But found your use of the Sandflex block interesting so I ordered some. When they came in I realized all of a sudden just how tiny your hands must be. LOL Great blocks though and great video on maintaining your bandsaw.

Hi, I tried this sharpening technique on Laguna re-saw blade using a Tormek T7. I used the sharpened blade to cut green logs of Blackwood and Eucalyptus species. It was excellent and cut through the logs easily. Thank you for the tip.

Great video, super tips on sharpening and degumming the blade. I also find that the sawdust from wet wood tends to get in the drive belt (a v groove belt on my Rikon 14" bandsaw) and eventually, or actually quite quickly, the belt jumps off. This is a real pain!! For some reason my dust collector can't cope as well with wet wood as other types.

Just one tip Ashley for anyone who is considering upgrading to a more powerful bandsaw. I recently did and found that my domestic power supply, which I can use to run my lathe and other machines, was insufficient for my more larger bandsaw, I just wanted one socket upgraded and it's not easy to find an electrician for such a small job. I eventually did and am now a happy turner again.

Never had a clue how much maintenance went into a bandsaw, the behind scenes work that must go into a single class, with all the pieces of equipment to keep them safe and in good working order plus prepping all the stock is a big block of your time your students never see. It makes the course price seem very reasonable.

I have recently tried a Laguna carbide tipped bandsaw blade. It was expensive but I am impressed so far with the results, especially the quality of the cut.. Some people say that these blades will far outlast the standard blades. I have used timberwolf in the past and generally like them

Here's a tip from an old guy who has done woodworking professionally all my life: NEVER wear a watch when operating machinery. When I was in school more years ago than I care to admit, a young woman cut her hand OFF while cutting a section of log on the band saw; the blade caught her watch. Take it for what it's worth, but rings and watches or any jewelry for that matter have no place in a shop environment.

Everyone has their own opinion on this. I disagree completely. A man's simple wedding band isn't any more dangerous to wear than nothing. I have never had an issue. I also always have a watch on and wear long sleeves in the winter. It really is dependent on the individual person.

@@oneshotonekill8926 : I respect your view, but disagree in principle. Years ago I walked into my bedroom and somehow caught my wedding ring in a key that was left in the lock. Somehow the instantaneous force on the gold ring was enough to split the weld and partially pull it away from my finger. This left me with a sizeable wedge of skin pinched between the two sharp ends of the ring that were acting as a spring clip. Half an hour of extreme pain late at night until I could figure out how to pull each side apart equally using tweezers as wedges!! Life is unpredictable.....

Ashley, yet another in your helpful series of advice. 🙏 There is one more though, related to the bandsaw. When removing a blade for replacement or sharpening, one may also use a wirebrush to scrub the rubber tyres of buildup, that may alter the tracking of the upper wheel. If this pandemic ever leaves humans, although it IS a *huge message* from The Universe, I'd love to come down from NS and take your class.

I have never seen that method for coiling a blade. It seems a bit harder/more likely to cut you. I stand on the bottom and take the blade in both hands, palms out, about 4 feet apart for some thing that big, and twist inward flipping your hands over. It will make two loops one in each hand, which will drop down onto the third held by your foot. It can be done slowly so you don't risk scratching your hands. I also noticed something is wromg with the diamond wheel on your grinder. It shouldn't runout like that. You will need a dial indicator to check if the shaft is true (both radially and the shoulder the wheel sits against. I suspect this one is caused by a loose fitting bore to the motor shaft. Let me know if you would like any help figuring out which part is causing it.

I love Ashley and her skills are amazing, this is just a little feedback on the editing. I come from a film and editing background and I find that use of B-roll footage during an interview immediately breaks contact between the viewer and person talking. Examples below. Normally this footage was used when the A-roll was damaged or unusable for some reason. Seeing a person looking at you and talking feels like they are talking to YOU. The B-roll, or 2nd camera angle, makes it feel like they are talking to someone else, not the viewer. The viewer is suddenly out of the conversation and just observing which, if done well, can trigger a peeping-Tom feeling: I shouldn't be seeing this, but here it is. The correct way to use a two-camera interview setup is to have the person talking turn to the other camera while talking with a cut in mid-turn, so shoot it twice; once with each camera. Ashley, one very important consideration when choosing a bandsaw are the wheels. Heavy cast iron wheels act as flywheels and keep the motor from bogging down. Light weight aluminum spoked wheels cannot do that. Horsepower is important but so are heavy cast iron wheels. Once the heavy cast iron wheels are turning a full speed it’s very hard to slow the saw down when cutting tough wood.

I thought it might be mentioning, that if you dont use your bandsaw for a while, it's best to loosen the tension on the blade so the tires dont develop a f li at spot which will increase vibration and noise. Btw, I thought it was genius to use a scraper to clean the blade!

Any advice for someone who is looking for a band saw to resaw beams for a timeframe shed? The use for it after that would probably be occasional. Needs to run off of 120 volt. I'm seeing a few in the thousand to fifteen hundred range with a tall enough throat, but it feels like a lot for something that won't be used a whole lot.

A carbide tipped band saw blade makes a huge difference in cutting hardwoods, costs 5x a normal flame hardened blade but generally lasts more than 5x longer and it can be repaired and welded back together just as easily.

Except those companies refuse to fix those blades! You are better of with a regular blade as they don't snap as easily.

Many of us use a Dremel tool with a grinder or cut off wheel to sharpen bandsaw blades. For my 14" delta I leave the blade on the saw and scoot my dremel around on the table hitting each tooth. There are lots of videos showing this technique.

It doesn't gum up the CBN wheel? Is the bandsaw blade metal such that it's fine to sharpen with the CBN. I have always purposed not to sharpen anything but my HSS tools with the CBN wheel.
