Good morning 🌅, Ashley, I hope you are keeping safe and well, I noticed a few years ago that you had moved or in the process of moving and building a new home and workshop, but from what I can gather, you haven’t posted anything, in the last few years, I was always amazed with your wood turning creating art, I hope you’re still in business making beautiful pieces of art, a long time supporter, friend living in France

Some of your techniques are a little say “unconventional” and questionable. I definitely would not put my hand on a turning piece unless you want to lose your fingers or hand. I would say there is learning that happens here. Maybe not the learning that was the goal. Safety first!

Thanks for this presentation. I am pretty new to woodturning and so I get lots of advice from more experienced people. This was a good explanation about the tools. I get that carbide tips wear out and you throw them away. For a standard gouge, what is their life if you keep them sharp? Do their wear out with sharpening?

Love turning but wood here in Texas is so scarce. That pile of stumps and cuts, especially the cherry, would be worth about $10000 here. Maybe more.

I'm a custom furniture builder and repairs for 38 years ,back in 2009 I purchased a Legacy wood working machine similar to a lathe and three months after getting it set up a person approached me at a woodworking supply store wanting staircase spindle's turned and not like any traditional stile is, First I asked how they wanted them finished and that would determine the kind of lumber to turn them out of ( painting white ) don't use Pine, the knots will blead through paint after years go bye, 186 turnings and every other one different and 14 post with a 3" ball on top, Job took 6 or 7 weeks, I made enough to pay me back on the investment of the machine. This machine has saved me with many jobs since, A job that a person choose to work on is determined by the tools one has. Keep up the nice work, now that you have the experience and knowledge, I retired 3 years ago and own my business and work an average of 80 hours a week, and enjoying every minute .

Nice tricks to clean & sharpen your bandsaw blades. You might want to try using a dremel tool with a small grinding stone to sharpen the blade without having to remove it from your saw. I also find that 3 in one silicone spray is a good lubricant that doesn’t pickup sawdust like WD -40

I’m 75, my first turning experience was in 7th grade shop class. I went on to a top business school, a corporate career and dabbled at turning. I have no aspirations of earning an income. I just want to perfect my technique so I am proud of the work. Regardless of all those comments, this is a terrific video. Thank you

Thanks Ashley, I have been practising with the one I bought from you last month, it came all the way back to Australia with me! I turned a big handle for it and used it turning the inside of a large green Tuart bowl blank. Took a while for me to get comfortable with the bevel but got there in the end. Interesting to see the near upright attitude of the flute in your video, I will keep that in mind too. Previously I have used scrapers for bowl bottoms, but that is a bit difficult in really deep bowls, which is why I bought the bottom finisher from you.

Really feel this was a biased review. You dont mention the time saved using carbide in sharpening, nor do you mention the advantages of carbide in mixed material turning (epoxy and wood). I think you should also mention the purchase price of good gouge vs good carbide more than compensates for purchasing replacement blades (rather than calling it 'marketing'' dismissively). You can of course sharpen carbide tools too to further reduce cost. Carbides can of course be used at an angle to get sheer cuts not scrapes and many come with round shafts to enable this. I could go on but instead ill say BOTH tools have advantages and disadvantages and the comparison is far more nuanced than presented here.
