This is actually two videos in one! In the first part, Nick shows how to set up your band saw for precise resawing, keeping the re-sawn wooden slabs at a consistent thickness and the block from which you are cutting them square and true. The second part shows how to use this set-up to cut the parts to make "nesting" boxes -- a collection of matching boxes that fit or "nest" inside one another. These can all be cut from a single block of wood, or a block that you assemble from several wood species to create a decorative pattern like the wooden "ribbons" shown here. Watch the first part for some great tips on resawing, and the second for a simple project you can make from scraps or firewood.
The plan for the the nesting boxes -- including detailed instructions on setting up for resawing -- is available from our Workshop Companion General Store at workshopcompanionstore.com/pr...
And if you'd like more information on the band saw, see Nick's book "Using the Band Saw" at workshopcompanionstore.com/pr...

My dad was a wood and metalshop teacher for 38 years so growing up I used to go over to his classes whenever we had off(he taught in a different district so we'd usually have different days off for holidays and whatnot). I'm pushing 30 myself in a few years so I can't describe how nice it is to feel like I'm right back in his classes learning about tools or whatever they were doing that day. Been close to 20 years now and it feels like yesterday. So, thank you.

The author does like to from scratch, kzbin.infoUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.

As many woodworkers are turning to other videos, I find it refreshing to find you making this nested boxes. I large slab of oak that I could cut out a 6", 12" long and 6" wide. This project is going on my to do list right away. I'd love to make the glue up for both of my daughters. A while back, I tried to make a jewelry box and us dovetail joinery. I was using walnut and oak. Unfortunately the jig I made did not workout. This would be a great keepsake for both of them.
