Thank you for showcasing this tool. ShopSmith is an American Icon and deserves a lot of praise. No, it’s not. $4000.00 sawstop, but they can be used to do so many things!

I say this with all the love in my heart, this man has serious PBS vibes. He's passionate, informative, non-judgmental. I could see him doing a crossover with the wood turning videos and/or Bob Ross. Simply love it.

Maybe I'm missing something, and I already own a sleeved Doweling jig, I've owned since the late 1980s, but it seems like just straight Dowling would be easier. Unless you were looking for the appearing of the exposed dowel look?

Is one cube enough for a cabinet like that with many drawers? Is there a time or cabinet type where you would use multiple cubes spread throughout?

This is an excellent idea. I love building projects (benches, med. cabinets, cubby shelves, etc.) with 1x pine and I use the same technique to create straight grain (riff/QS) for my builds.

Setting a plane flat on a CLEAN workbench won't do any harm to the blade. They used to teach "put it on it's side" since new students can be careless about keeping their bench clear of debris. Setting it down flat also protects the blade from accidental contact with a metal tool or fingers. It's better to be aware of your surroundings and place it appropriately. At a worksite with nails and debris? Set your plane on its side. In a workshop with a clean bench? Set it flat, ready to be quickly picked up and used.
