Thank you for such a simple yet comprehensive presentation. As per discussion it is very concerning what children are exposed to with regards to media. Yes , parents have to ensure that they have sone form of control over what they expose their children too, but I feel that policy has let us down, it is too relaxed, and many companies are enjoying exponential profits from this content at the expense of our children. As much as we want to keep them away, once they arevin school and have social circles, peer pressure now comes into place, peers show and talk about certain tv games, shows etc and creates curiosity, they develop outrageous intelligence such as knowing how to bypass passwords etc...its a mess!!!!

Hi! Thank you for sharing your experience. You are right. It's difficult to control their levels of exposure in this day n age. Peer pressure plays a huge role. And the other aspect that plays a role is the temptation of the unknown. So the more one tries to restrict, the more children would go out of the way to explore. All one can do is to try and restrict as much as humanly possible, and hope for the best!

Hi Reshma. You are correct. Social media has a very heavy influence. And there's really escape from it for kids. If parents stop kids from using it, they become more rebellious. So parents need to try and strike a balance between disallowing usage, and catering to children's curiosity.

Excellent summary, thanks for making this! Regarding the influencing in young minds with violence in media, I think people who argue that this does effect children negatively don't give enough credit to children. It seems to me that the majority are clearly quite capable of separating fiction and "play" from reality and what behaviours are expected of them in certain social contexts. Additionally, we've been running this experiment for quite some time now, and overall violence continues to drop in societies with violent films and video games.

It should be left to parents to decide if they gauge their children to be capable of adapting behaviour they see in the digital media. Thanks for your tutorial! As for the discussion, I believe in the early stage, a child's exposure to some violent or even obscene contents is detrimental. However, alongside their growth, it can be beneficial to witness some negative sides in their lives, thereby preparing for the intricacy of society.

Hi Henry. You make an interesting point about the benefits of witnessing the negative side of things. If one is totally blinded from darkness, one would never differentiate brightness from darkness! I remember an episode of the famous series Black Mirror (episode name: Archangel) wherein a mother uses a technology which sensors a child's vision. So the child is unable to see anything graphic. The child becomes a complete mental wreck as a result. Worth checking out! :)

As for the discussion questions, no doubt unregulated access to mainstream media, films video games and social media has a direct influence on learning and behavior in children and even adults through vicarious learning and imitation. Society does have a responsibility to consider the impact of aggressive behavior since the children as well as members of the society do get influenced. We should not assume that all children have parents or guardians to regulate screen time or access to online content. Some are busy, others would not care less, others are struggling with their own social issues and yet others could be perpetrators of violent behavior! Negative behavior ends up affecting society through for example drunk driving, gang related crimes, gun violence, drugs problems among other social vices,

Hi Anne. You're welcome! Yes, that's true. And out of the categories you outlined, the one that's most dangerous is the one that doesn't care. Unless such people start caring (and regulating content), we're staring into a grim reality in future. I am sure we all see examples of kids being handed phones or tablets as soon as they start throwing tantrums. Hopefully people educate themselves on the potential effects of content without parental locks. If they don't it inevitably affects society, like you pointed out.

Firstly, Thank you for this excellent video. Now about the discussion questions, When I was teaching in a school, we requested parents to not allow the children to watch Shin Chan as we found that the elementary school children were getting influenced with it and were being more aggressive towards their peers . Now I'm working as a counseling psychologist and before corona I was regularly getting clients who were getting violent after getting addicted to PUBG.

I completely agree with you. With the advent of technology, we're getting exposed to a lot more influential content than before. Example: I recently watched a couple of videos on FB relating to people driving badly. This then led to accident videos. Before I knew, I had watched loads of them. And guess what, . . I freaked out the other day when I saw someone at a distance driving carelessly. So anything we watch can influence us really.

As per discussion though in my view society and producers have tried by age restrictions as well as accounts of goggle linked to parents and as much as children are sensitive ,parents should have a full time job of protecting children against such exposure and yes so much impact is done on children but we can only protect them as much as we can be fair to adults who enjoys watching that to films , I mean not completely take it off our screens but it is a full time job for a parent to be that much over protective to their kids

As we all know, the more we restrict, the more we would invite a rebellion. But most people manage to do a good job balancing the curiosity of their children and regulating what they watch. It's just about a balance and how each set of parents goes about achieving this balance.

You're welcome Mohamed. And if I understood your question correctly, repeated experiences to learning can indeed influence behaviour. You see, Bandura has stated that there may or may not be a change in behaviour from learning. So there's always a probability of change through repeated exposure. Hope this helps!

However, I would like to emphasise that video games, particularly endless ones like Minecraft and frustrating ones like FallGuys, make children more aggressive and self-isolated. After pausing their games, we all noted that they are hyperactive due to the games triggering their GAPPA receptors for pleasure.

Hi Abdullah. Yes, that's correct. On one hand, we can't allow them do watch or play whatever they choose to, and on the other hand we can't fully restrict them. Also, seemingly harmless mobile games can also have paid add-on content which can make children spend more. So one would need to constantly be on the lookout for what's popular with the younger lot and what's appropriate for their age. And yes, hyperactivity is often a result of consoles and mobiles acting as pacifiers for children. We've all seen households where mobile phones are handed to misbehaving kids, and they instantly get pacified and get lost in the world inside the screen!

When I was on 4 grade. I was play a game that banned from many country. Name's postal 2. My father bought it from store and he think it's a normal game about delivery service and a lil bit pew pew like gta. My english wasnt good back then. I found out that, I can torture people there like incinerate, chop people's limb and etc. I love how people beg for mercy, scream of pain and pleeding for their life. I play it almost everytime I can play games on pc, every saturday night because I dont want my parent find out that this game is sick. Fast forward on my 25 yo, I still not have any interest of blood. I even avoid any gore video and movie such isis decapitate western journalist and saw films. I never bully someone except being toxic that I got from my mother. But I still have internal urge having pleasure over people's suffering and misery, both mentally or physically. I don't know if this urge from games that I played when I was a kid, or from my natural gene. Because I have something almost similiar when I was kindergarten age. My dad did violence over my mother and me. I dont know for sure if this the cause. But today, the urge still there, getting more and more worse but I never do any such temptation.

Hi Achmad. Thank you for sharing your story in detail. What you described isn't completely abnormal or dangerous. So there's nothing to worry about yet. Videogames and other media can have a wide variety of influences. And witnessing abuse as a child can lead to stronger responses as an adult than video games. So long as you keep a check on your impulses and don't react, it's all okay. But if you feel like your urge is getting stronger and you have started to (or want to start) hurt animals, plants or other people, seek immediate psychiatric counselling and sessions. All the best!

Society and parental caregivers are responsible when it comes to the reinforcement of negative behavior. How much exposure to the child is important also. Monitoring what children hear and watch is crucial. This is where the environment comes in, the philosophy of the adults and their influence, the observational as well as language learning. We are all born with the inherent traits of our parents. As a child matures will depend on those traits as well as the guidance of the parents to reinforce the negative as well as the positive rewards. I came up with watching violence in movies. Black and White TV with James Cagney, Humprey Bogart, George Ralph. Cowboys shoot them up everywhere the issue is mentoring the child as to what is real and what is not. How the child intakes information without instruction leaves it up to the child to come to their own imagination and formation of opinions which is part of how they see the world. The BoBo doll has been criticized for how it was conducted. First, He used children from the university child care of employees, All of the same social background and parent's mindsets as an educated and racial similarity. Also, there is no empirical research on this group of children as they matured and how this BoBo experiment affected them. What was the outcome without continued exposure did they continue with the behavior outside of the study to others like family or at school.? I have concerns with his theory even though the criminal justice system considers this theory the reason for violence in our society Jaci

Hi Jaci. Yes, that's correct. It's the responsibility of parents to ensure that children develop the right interpretation skills. There obviously needs to be an element of control in the way of parental locks, in this day of content abundance. But them developing interpretation skills the right way is a lot more important. The Bobo doll experiment was definitely not a perfect experiment. It worked for the time it was conducted, and provided some basic insights on observational learning. It didn't take into account several aspects like the social backgrounds of the test subjects. And unfortunately, there's no follow-up data in terms of continued behaviour unfortunately.

But the key element was the adult was hitting the Bobo doll. In movies and games, there is no social interaction. The idea of 'scoring a point is not worth as much as social interaction. So I would say we should base behavior amongst adults but movies and TV's are less important. Then we have the question of why is your child watching an 18+ show in the first place?

Well, childrens won't have an access to social media (where most aggressive content can be found) if parents don't allowed them to. So, yeah, parents are responsible for the behavior of their children. Don't let them use gadgets unless they are fully matured enough. Also, model an exemplary behavior, as stated by Bandura, that children learn through observation.

Agreed! In this day and age, mobile phones have become pacifiers for children. And parents find it difficult to keep mobile phones and social media away from children. It is their responsibility, and then the responsibility of the authorities to ensure that content moderation is strict and transparent to one and all.
