I remember balling my eyes out after this scene. What a tear jerker movie.

What a nicely done scene. With those symbolic two stewardesses waiting to see him into the plane.

The film is OK but does not do justice to the book. You must read the book. And also the book that sets it up, "The Southpaw". In "The Southpaw", the Mammoths are in the 1952 season, in "Bang The Drum" they are in 1955.

There aren't too many movies I can name that approach a good novel that it adapts, but this one did a pretty good job. DeNiro at his best. But books are always better.

@@joeharris3878 You could be right. I just think that some screenwriters are a little lazy, or just lacking in perception. If a novel is good, then stick to it and don't take the teeth out of it, which is what they did with this scene.

Inaccurate scene. In the book, Henry says "He was so weak he could hardly carry his bags." Also, Bruce's father had come up and returned to Georgia with him, so he too was in this scene at the airport.

It's not "inaccurate." A movie isn't a direct transcript from a book. It's an adaptation for a different, visual medium.

@@kensimon2850 Whether the different medium is visual or not, the main story line had Bruce's cancer was much farther along by the time of his departure from the team and return to Georgia. He had lost weight. He was always cold and asking for a jacket. Maybe a terminal illness should be portrayed as such.
