No offense to Sam but I really feel like you should have a different main host on episodes like this one. It gets a bit tiresome to have to hear him consistently remind the viewer that he doesn't like the genre being discussed when a two way discussion between the hosts about a genre they're both passionate about is a lot more interesting. This is why he works well for death metal or prog type episodes but I feel like the slow metal episodes (or goth/symphonic episodes as well) should feature a specialized main host and co-host so it's not just a debate between the guest and the chat as happened here. Still enjoying the channel and episodes tho.

I have to admit that I get a little tired of that too. Everything doesn't have to be fast and a lot of great music is ruined because there's no concept of tempo other than "faster". For me very fast music after a point sometimes begins to sound like cartoon music. And fast is very different from heavy. Speed freaks are always quick, if you will, to remind of their preference. Quid pro quo.

I like hearing opposite sides, but this is about listing something in a more objective way. I think Sarah Kitteringham being more doom-based would have worked. That said, this is years ago, just saying.

@@MRSludgedude Highly disagree. I hear a lot of sludge on Come My Fanatics and Dopethrone. "We hate you" is very sludgy to my ears, even if youre obvsl right about the lack of hardcore, that song has a punky vibe to me especially. What bands do you consider are good examples for "Sludge" as a sound?

This genre is really hard to pin down because it's not 1 genre, it's really 3. On one end of the spectrum you have Stoner Rock, bands like Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Truckfighters, etc. On the other end of the spectrum you have Doom, bands like Electric Wizard, Sleep and many others. Then all along that spectrum there are hundreds of bands that fall somewhere in between the 2 genres. That's Stoner Metal. Edit: I'd also like to plug Elder - Dead Roots Stirring as a criminally underrated album in this genre.

Myself I am here for the "stoner" part more than the "metal" part. I am a hard rock fan, classic rock fan, psychedelic music fan, shoegaze fan as well as alternative rock and grunge fan. That is why i enjoy queens of the stone age, Tame Impala, Tangerine Dream, Grateful Dead, Flaming Lips, My Bloody Valentine or Jimi Hendrix also as well as electric wizard or sleep or The Sword. I like sludge but sometimes those dudes get too depressing or angry. Kyuss is a band which I can wear a T shirt of

Rise Above had a large influence on british stoner/doom and let's not forget the legendary Man's Ruin label that initially identified the fuzzed out stoner rock sound that helped build the genre/scene in it's infancy.

Personally, I think it would have been helpful at the beginning of the show to clearly articulate the differences between traditional doom, stoner and sludge sub-genres. That way demarcations between the three would have been stated up front making it easier to focus specifically on Stoner.

Personal Opinions here: - My favorite stoner album Witch - Witch should here. - Age Of Winters should have been there instead of Warp Riders as the essential Sword Album. Its the album where they perfected their sound. - Elder's new album in an instant classic imo and should have made the list. (Even if its a little proggy) - St Vitus are very influential but they are still a doom band, Cathedral is a better fit here and I agree with John. Glad the show is back. Keep up the good work \\m//

High on Fire absolutely belongs on there! Trouble is debatable for musical reasons on the early albums, and having met them back in the day, let’s just say there’s something of substance that they didn’t partske of... Couldn’t watch full show, had to get back to work, but has anyone heard Blue Cheer? These guys are LOUD, heavy, thick sludgy guitar and bass tones, from California in the 1960’s, and they rven predate Sabbath playing this sound by a few years.

I just finished watching your episode and, I think as far as Electric Wizard goes it definitely should be Come My Fanatics over Dopethrone as the essential album. For Cathedral, The Carnival Bizarre would be the most stoner metal than Ethereal Mirror, which has way too much disco hoots and hollers in it. HOWEVER, for essential UK stoner metal how come no one mentioned Acrimony's Tumuli Shroomaroom album on Peaceville? Maybe people don't know it because the band broke up so soon afterwards, but goddamn what at record. That and Come My Fanatics were the best two metal albums of 1997

Okay what you guys need to do is do this over with THREE stoner metal experts that listen to lots of doom and sludge also, no Sam as host, and not rushed at all. Like a 2-hour episode.

They originally only did 38-48 minute episodes in the beginning (2 years ago), but before the hiatus in May of this year, they were clocking in at over an hour at times. It seems like they want to keep it at 50 minutes or less now?

slight hardcore vocals?? You are exactly right of course. I had to laugh cuz Down are in fact quintessential Stoner metal or Stoner doom.

I would say it's right in the middle though. Yes they have mostly sludge in their sound, which is not strange considering half the band comes from Eyehategod or Crowbar, but they have a lot of stoner influence to it as well, and dare I say a whole lot of blues and some classic rock too.

I don’t understand why people confuse the terms so much. Stoner rock - Early heavy metal, still with significant psychedelic/prog rock influence. Examples: black sabbath, deep purple, blue cheer, UFO, some Led Zeppelin songs. Stoner metal: heavy metal with psychedelic rock influence. Examples: kyuss Stoner doom: heavy metal, specifically doom metal mixed with psych/acid rock (most modern stoner metal bands are in this category). Examples: electric wizard, sleep, stoned jesus. Sludge metal: nothing psychedelic, doom metal with hardcore punk influence. Examples: melvins, thou

Funny, 'cause you are confused yourself. What defines the "stoner" thing is the heavily distorted, groove-laden bass-heavy sound, and usually the slow-to-mid tempo and the psychedelic/acid rock influence, basically. Although some early heavy metal bands brought some of those elements in a way or another, we don't call them stoner rock or stoner metal, because it was not fully realized yet, at best we call it proto-stoner - More, don't call a band like Black Sabbath stoner ROCK, and surely not just because they're an early band, that's completely wrong as they are the first very definition of Heavy Metal (before Judas Priest got straight to it) -. Stoner rock was born in the '90s with a revival of those elements fully realized into an aesthetic, one that can be fused with other genres. So it goes more like that: Proto-stoner - Early hard rock and heavy metal with significant psychedelic/prog rock influence. Examples: Blue Cheer, UFO, Sir Lord Baltimore, Leaf Hound, Black Sabbath. Stoner rock (aka desert rock) - hard rock/psychedelic rock with the stoner aesthetic. Examples: Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Dozer, Truckfighers Stoner metal - heavy metal with the stoner aesthetic. Examples: Orange Goblin, Red Fang, High on Fire Doom metal - slow bass-heavy sounding metal Examples: Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Reverend Bizarre Stoner doom - doom metal with stoner aesthetic. Examples: Sleep, Acid King, Electric Wizard, Stoned Jesus Sludge metal - doom metal with hardcore punk influence Examples: Eyehategod, Crowbar, Acid Bath, Iron Monkey Stoner Sludge - sludge metal with the stoner aesthetic Examples: Weedeater, Bongzilla, Conan There IS some overlap in all those genres though, that's why it is not always so easy and direct to classify some bands.

My favourite doom albums are Cathedral's Ethereal Mirror and Electric Wizard's Dopethrone. Does this mean I'm more of a Stoner fan than a Doom fan? But I don't like stuff like Kyuss or Sleep.

What's the difference between stuff like Kyuss and stuff like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains anyway? To me there's no audible difference between the more metallic end of grunge and the lighter end of stoner metal.
@sabbatheus
@sabbatheus 7 жыл бұрын
For some people, Soundgarden is a Stoner Metal band. Even metal-archives consider them as Stoner Metal band. Alice in Chains have a lot of Sabbath influence in their sound. Alice in Chains also have doom metal songs and sludge songs. But I think Kyuss isn't too melancholic as Soundgarden and Alice in Chains and this is what make those bands in another "way".
