The last album disappointed me because it was too jazzy🤮 and nervous for my taste. And what I'm hearing now.....Well......actually the same thing. Too bad. That's it for me with Opeth!

See this is sooo badly put by her.."welcome back opeth" no, jus no. If you like this and calln this opeth, then you never listened to in cauda venenum. This new album is weird dark proggy, JUST LIKE in cauda. Its such a lame bs non true opeth fan thing to say. It jus shows u didnt listen to in cauada. Cuz how is this a welcome back if its the same as in cauda. If people are going to be saying, welcome back, then you should have done it last album. And if u dont feel like thats so, for in cauada, then u can't say it now. No siree! Pshh

On my first listen, I wasn't hooked. I thought it was all over the place and no one track stood out to me. Thought it was like a mud puddle with no distinctions. But on my second listen I was completely hooked. I mean completely. It was spinning on the record player non stop side A to D all day yesterday and I don't see today being any different. Or tomorrow. This is a fantastic album.

You have me so stoked for the album! It’s funny what Michael said about bringing back the growls when nobody cared because I was fine thinking he’d never do it again. But hearing that voice now, with that music… tears of joy! This could very well be my favourite 2024 release and I’ve only heard what you played in this video.

On wiki, among the technical personnel credits you can find Klara Ronqvist Fors as dramatic consultation. Dramatic consultation. Is this to help the band with their drama or was she enlisted to help them create drama in the music? Given the number of lineup changes for this band I expect maybe the former.

Love me some power metal and Fellowship are right up there! Something super earnest and charming about their music. Couldn't get enough of their first album during lockdown, it was so hopeful and bright during a pretty miserable time. Can't wait to really sink deep into this one, sounds great so far!

Really not interested. Was once a huge opeth fan... but opeth moved on to other pastures and I moved to thornier beds to embed myself. Im good.

Not trying to be a pedantic dick, but, ‘I Shall Die Here/Earth Triumphant’ is a re-release of the 2014 album with the same name (minus the “earth triumphant” part). It is also another collaboration album between The Body and The Haxan Cloak and remains my favorite record in their catalog. In my opinion, it’s the band’s scariest record. Again, not trying to be a jerk, I just had to let my inner nerd out and type that out.

“Heavyweights of Progressive Metal. Nobody compares to what they have done”- Id argue Enslaved stand just as tall as Opeth in Prog Metal consistency. Great review

I did not connect with album till the track 5. First 4 are boring. Pointlessly composed music. Not catchy at all. Then it starts to be much better. And the fact that you highlight tracks 5, 6, 7 in your review actually supports my evaluation of the whole album

The only thing I don't like about this record is that is too short. I was expecting changes after Hulten's departure, but not going all goth rock almost ditching death metal. It's very 80's cool goth, with obvious references to 80's - 90's goth bands, but also horror soundtracks, and even stuff like Giorgio Moroder. I think it's a very cool record and I'm getting it. Not that much metal but who cares.

His growls are awesome but he's also got such a great natural voice as well. I think the growls fit perfectly here, especially when you take in the lyrics.

Just wanted to come here with a reccomendation for you Sarah. It's not related to this genre neccesarily but i figured the newest vid would be where it's likelier to be seen. Lust Hag- S/t. Raw black metal that tells an awesome story with the lyrics. at least 4/5 album on first listen. Might lean higher upon relistens idk

Honestly, this album is going to take MANY listenings for me to grasp it’s full genius. Then, I predict it will be my favorite- even knocking Ghost Reveries to 2nd place. Song 1 and A Story Never Told don’t need many listenings. They are both graspable at first listening.

Bit harsh imo, i think the record is great except for flatline. But like you said music is different for everyone. For example i see you are are a fan of hulder and for me that is the most mid generic black metal out there, but hey to each their own.

It was hilarious during his peak, the religious nuts would be outside of concerts, begging us not to go inside! Then in the morning they went to Rodeos and abused and killed animals… “Christianity”

First listen yesterday, it felt suuuuuper crowded and close to overflowing at all times. I still think that to some extent 3 spins later. I think it would be better with a little nudge less of about everything that's on top of the basic instruments, and maybe a bit more time to breathe here and there. We'll see what the next few spins give away.

Just a small complaint to be that one nerd. Opeth did not go progressive or prog in 2011. They've always been prog. Their whole career is prog. They just cut out the metal parts and were left with twice the amount of rock. I hate it when people refer to 2011-2024 as Opeth's prog era as it's total nonsense. Rather refer to the 'phases' as Oldpeth, Newpeth and now Neopeth. Or some like that.

Awesome review! This is easily their best since watershed but I don’t think it’s amazing. Once I got past the admittedly thrilling return of growls and death metal I found it to be a little meandering and lacking in hooks. I think the bookends shine but the middle section dragged a bit. And I honestly don’t give a shit about the concept. You could’ve told me any of their records were concept albums and it wouldn’t make a difference. The vibe is very haunting though so props there. It felt like the soundtrack to a more experimental “Shining”. I’d give it a 4/5 after a few listens.
