Pianist's name is Pierre Grimard. He was also musical director for this tour "En toute intimite". This concert is a masterpiece. If she's never done any other concert after it, she's done enough for a lifetime. Pure artistry.

Always with the same amazing acting and emotions conveying skills. Hint: she has been classically trained and still continues to be, she is a lyrical soprano and only swtiched to pop from opera because she is first and foremost a songwriter (in 4 languages).

“Je suis Malade” was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973. This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …). When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and compose the music in a couple of hours. The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes. Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad. But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s. At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version. She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet. They became good friends. Lara has made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power and Serge Lama adopted these in his later interpretations. The 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3m2qp5qiKynq7s is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries. The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella.

Great you return to Lara. Lara change the way she interprets her songs in every tour. This is one of my favorite renditions of Je suis malade, from my favorite concert of her (2003 “En toute Intimité” at the Casino de Paris) Believe it or not, it’s even not the most famous version (this is this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3m2qp5qiKynq7s ) But I am glad you covered this one, and loved all your sensible comments. She is indeed famous for her conversational interpretations, able to switch from speaking to singing within the same breath. And she is also famous for being the best at riding the fine line between crying and singing . Now you understand what Dimash fell in love with: besides the vocal skills, it is about acting, interpretation, impersonating a character and conveying a story and the related emotions! This performance has much to recommend it, but my gateway drug to Fabian was her performance of it in the From Lara With Love concert. I far prefer that take on it. And down the rabbit hole I went. It was... astonishing. You should check it out. A little less theatrical & incredible choices/technique throughout. Control was was mind-blowing. This particular performance pushed the theatricality ahead of the voice a smidge too far for my tastes. (Not that I don't adore all her myriad approaches to her pieces. I'm a stan for the first time in my life. 😆)

The most telling reactions I have ever listened to but then again, you had the most beautiful, heavenly performance of the greatest artist I have ever witnessed even though only on video. After seeing this, there is just no one to match this, not even remotely. She's 100% living that story. Something truly unforgettable for anyone who attended this performance, including and especially the pianist! The first for him, of that I am dead certain. The sheer exhaustion after this performance is more than just evident. I very much doubt that she would ever give a similar performance because of the energy it took just for this performance. If there is one song that Lara totally fell in love with, it can only be this one - "Je suis, malade". I would love to know what any journalist or anyone else had to say in the media about this. This is truly amazing rendition of a very powerful piece. Lara goes to such great lengths to deliver the deep feelings in this song. I was completely floored by the emotions she expresses in this performance. In addition, the almost spoken introduction and the unamplified shouted ending are strokes of genius. Lara Fabian does not simply sing this song. She shows us what is in the soul of the young girl. French is the language for deep feelings. The English ‘despair’ would fall off implying an ending. But the French ‘désespoir’ rises and lingers evoking ongoing pain. And there are subtleties in the lyrics whose ambiguities are so intriguing. When she was young and her mother went out at night, was she sick over it because her mother would rather not be burdened with a child? Or was it because this was the only way her mother could support her and the young girl was stricken by the thought that it was because of her? Good choice and good reaction.

BVC - Nice. Thanks for showing this version. I am not surprised, you seem to have good taste IMO. A GOAT-like performance by our Queen in a version many perhaps have not seen. Some say Lara is "too much" . I would respond, too much great singing? Too much (many) goose bumps? Too much immersion into the song taking you with her, whether you want to go or not? Too memorizing? Well maybe that.

And totally agree with emotional power of spoken words in songs. Lara is the expert in that register. One of her many signatures. It seems easy but it is not. One needs to sing as easily as one can speak (no tension, hours of training, breath management, ....). Speech singing is not something everyone is capable of doing without it sounding disjointed. Story tellers draw you in with this technique. Very, very different artist, but Dolly Parton is a master in speech singing & I can get caught up in her story telling. At 78 years old she has adjusted the way she sings some songs. Lara & Dolly spoke about their voices changing with age & made almost identical statements concerning finding new areas within their vocals to highlight. When Dolly sings certain songs, she has a brother that is a high tenor harmonize with her, other songs she leans into the fragility of her voice. I discovered Lara maybe 8-10 months ago. Lara’s songwriting skills & Dolly’s are able to paint vivid pictures when they sing. I ❤️ both these artist. ✌🏼

I watched an interview with Dolly Parton on a talk show speaking of her long career. Do you know who she is? Dolly wrote her first song at 5 years old, began singing Country Music on a local Radio Station live at 10 years old, at 13 she released singles & albums that were being played on Country Music Radio stations throughout the United States, Dolly Parton had preformed on the Grand Ole Opera, and then moved to a Country Music TV program at 16 years old. At 27 Dolly went out to becoming a Star in Country Music, then a Crossover Pop Star, and then a Movie Star in Hollywood with hit movies: “9 to 5”, “Steel Magnolias”, and “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”. Dolly Parton has released more than 50+ Albums. Note: Dolly is well known for her Speech Singing, her ease in weaving in & out of her normal singing voice with her, speech singing voice; which, is very useful when a singer is a story teller, and I can forget she is singing because I get caught up in the story. Dolly Parton is a gifted song writer, Elvis Presley love to come by & dig through the songs Dolly wrote for Elvis, Kenny Rogers, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Joan Jette, and a song Lara Fabian covered that was written by Dolly Parton. Forgive me for not making my comments clear. Lara is an exceptional artist who is a song writer, a story teller, meaning I can get carried away by listening too the speech singing, that Lara makes a picture in my mind so vivid & clear. Many can sing, some can write songs, fewer can speech sing, and even less can tell a story singing. Do you know who Dolly Parton is? I’ve only ever seen the version “From Lara With Love” that is itself incredible, a lot more singing. This one os just as great but from an older Lara and with a different perspective. You should still watch the other one but goodness, I’ve been meaning to find a perfect word for her and I kept thinking I need something musical but Shakespearean is what she is when she sings!

Hello William, I came to you after Dimash but I stay for you. ❤ There are, of course, different versions of this wonderful song. This one I didn't know, More often I listened to Lara from "With Love Concert". The whole thing is wonderful. I would like to draw your attention to another interpretation of this song. Little known and so wonderful that I can't help but mention it. This is the version of Daniel Levi, who sang this song directly for Lara, in a certain French TV show. If you have a moment, listen to this amazing singer. There is much less theatricality and drama in his performance and yet from the first listening I fell in love with his unique timbre and wonderful interpretation. Hugs.

I think it is important to write about him because he really was a unique singer and a great musician. Is she rehearsing a theatre production? Sorry Will I prefer her singing this 2003/4. Too dramatic for me. Lara appears to be changing her style again. She has a tendency to do this every few years. Age is changing her but she has a wonderful singing voice & have always enjoyed her over the past 23 years.
