The saddest part is that everyone would've been saved if they didn't delay the abandoning of the ship. The lifeboats would've still been accessible when they just noticed the ship starting to tilt. To all the people's defending the captain: Schettino was the one who sank the ship and he is not the saviour you think he is. He made it go too close to the coast just because he wanted to do the traditional greeting to Isola del Giglio (a greeting that is not in the ship schedule but some do because of tradition). Schettino was careless just because he wanted to show off and, instead of caring for safety, he decided to do the greeting without even checking the path of the ship. He also didn't contact the port security right away and informed them of the danger. He took time and lied, saying it was just a BLACKOUT after (and only after) he was contacted from outside because of a crew member that was scared and contacted a relative. And I dare you to say that that didn't contribute to what caused the panic and deaths that happened. So, if you think that "saving" most of the people from the disaster you made because you were careless, killing around 50 and leaving the ship before the others is what a saviour should do, then I'm speechless. Try telling that to the families of those who died.

On top of that, he lied to the coast guard and delayed help from rescue teams for more than one hour because of that. The captain of the Titanic isn't the only person at fault for its sinking. Long before she set sail, she had a fire onboard & a few other small issues. All of which weren't checked to see if she was safe to sail, let alone take passengers. It was a whole host of failures that culminated in her fate. The captain of the Concordia however has no such excuse. He chose to put that ship on a course that he knew was potentially dangerous. There was nothing wrong with the ship itself. His actions - or lack of - made things worse after the ship hit the rocks too. Turning the ship allowed more water to pour into its sub - compartments, which caused it to list at that odd angle. It also left the ship vulnerable to the tidal currents & winds, blowing it off course, with no means to counter it. That sandbank was a blessing in disguise, otherwise the ship would've continued taking on water, causing it to tilt even more & become fully submerged.

Two years later the South Korean ship Sewol sank. The captain also told people to stay in their cabins. 304 people, mostly teenage students, died because they followed this order. The captain was one of the first to abandon ship. If a ship hits something, there should be a universal law that all people assemble at the emergency stations UNTIL the ship has been assessed. @@steve75112 There was no quick thinking of the captain. He did not save the ship, he abandoned it. This type of cruiseship is totally electrically driven. Once the electric power went down, they had no control over the ship. It's movement was a result of the waves and the wind. It was pure luck that the wind blew the ship back to the coast of the island. So what I'm hearing is: the captain fled inconspicuously, leaving a dancing troupe among others to do roll calls and maintain some semblance of order as evacuation got underway - until there were no boats left for them, so they plunged into the ice-cold Mediterranean in January and swam to shore? Those kids are amazing, regardless of how they reference the Titanic.

Imagine. People here relate to the movie Titanic But imagine not being able to speak italian while most of the crew can't speak anything but italian! And imagine being in open water with several nautical miles between you and land. No rescue helicopters, only small wodden boats, morse code and the hope that you won't freeze to death even if you are in a lifeboat. One should never compare misery to one another, but imagine comparing running aground on a populated island to the loss of Bismarck or Estonia - both in open water.

I want you to know that the titanic and the Concordia where both ships and they both sank, they where both in water, they both hade no one to save them (first atleast) and that comparing these two tragedies is just showing us how these two events have a lot in Common, and this just how even though we have learned a lot because of the titanic these tragedies still happen and we should still continue to make the boats safer and we have to make better evacuation plans. If we relate Titanic to Concordia we only mean it as “look this is similar to titanic” and we are not trying to offend anyone. And I am sorry if we did.

@@Kornelius.1228 You don't even compare, i mean you don't even think to compare TITANIC disaster to Costa Concordia, Both sank? what do you mean? TITANIC is 4kilometers under the sea dude. Concordia just tilted and thats it. People could swim to shore and on top of that people could stay on the tilted ship for a week and wait for help, i mean they had somewhere to stay, they were not forced to jump into the water. By saying that i don't mean that it wasn't bad, ofc and it was bad and i feel sorry for everyone on the ship. 1 rule when you go anywhere. Find out the safety equipment and where to escape. Since they know the engine room is flooding. Why not just start abandoning ship? Why are they pulling back on the lifeboat?? Just let it go and it will not sink. Hold on tight to your life jacket if you jump. You may get knocked unconscious if you hit the water and the jacket hit you in the face.

I've been watching alot of these cruise/ferry sinking videos now and they all have 1 exact same thing in common. Everyone onboard is never told to evacuate or get to a safe place before the ship sinks. Every single video is exactly the same the captain says nothing the coastguard or anyone says nothing or told to just wait in their rooms and people die because of it. Really I believe that because these ships sinking is such a rare event that no captain or anyone is even qualified to deal with it because when it actually happens they are apparently in such shock or only thinking of them self that they refuse to get everyone out safe.

My aunt was meant to board the ship at the next stop. Going that close to the coast, the "salute" is actually not safe or admitted, but everyone did it all the time, as a show to tourists. To us italians it's still appalling today. The accident, the shameful behaviour of the capitain, the captain from the coast guard shouting at him. Also appalling was the behaviour of several people who'd go to the coast to take selfies with the wreck of the ship. An open wound.

No one should have died at all, all they had to do was shut down the lifts and make sure everyone was as high up on the ship as possible towards the side that was lifting up. They had plenty of time to do this, the thing never even sank, it just rolled over slowly. Also it was nothing like the titanic, it was like 100m from the shore, most people could have just swam it in the following morning.
