Hey Mike ,great tutorial ,how are you tuning the bouzouki? Would you ever do a quick lesson on bouzouki accompaniment ,I think they prefer to tune in GDAD which is a whole new set of chords darn it !

In this video it's just tuned GDAE, only in recent videos have I started to drop the high E to a D as it does create a cool sound. I might do a video on bouzouki in the future, but I'm not much of a bouzouki player so it'd be a little out of my comfort zone. Hi, another great video Mike! Question about the d-u-d-d-u-d strumming pattern... why is this so darn important? I mean, is the idea here that we are providing emphasis/accents on beats 1 and 4 of a 6/8? Couldn't we do that same thing with the basic alternating picking pattern (D-U-D-U-D-U) and just make sure we throw some slightly harder strokes on beats 1 and 4? Probably a mistake to put a beginner question on an advanced video, but still - your opening remarks got me thinking and I thought I'd ask.

Good question. The DUD DUD is the best way of getting the 'jig' to sound like a 'jig'. You are correct in saying that we are trying to accent 1 & 4 ... and yes you could do that with DUD UDU and just accent the Up stroke on 4. But the problem with that method is that it's very easy to slip and make it sound like you're actually playing a melody in 4/4 time that just happens to be in groups of 3. It's very subtle and it won't stop you playing in jig time if you play DUD UDU, but, the DUD DUD is the best and most effective way of getting the right 'feel' for jig time. Plus, any exercise where you gain more control over your pick directions is always worth working on. Hope that helps! Mike

Hi Josh, it's the cheapest of the cheap Ozark bouzouki that cost about £150. It's fine to mess around with at home, but I'm in the market for a better one as soon as we can go back to the shops :) Cheers Mike
