Banjo from a tambourine conversion? Should I convert this Kmise tambourine into a banjo?

In this video, I briefly review the Kmise 10-inch tambourine and discuss the possibilities of converting it to a diddley bow, banjo, or banjolele. What do you think I should do with it?
The tambourine is available on Amazon and other places. Here is a link www.amazon.com...

You should make one Steve, I bought a Japanese made Tambourine from the 1980s at a yard sale last year for that reason, but haven't had the heart to make one with it. It's a nice one, I'll buy another instead. Can't wait to see yours 👍

Steve I vote for the banjo. Imagine what would happen if you played clawhammer and whapped the head on that thing?? WOW that would be cool. So put lots of strings on it, 4 or 5 so you can claw on it.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm definitely leaning toward the banjo. The question is, 4 or 5 strings! If I do a 5-string, I think I will do it with nylon strings and a 19" scale so that the tension won't be too high on the drum head. Firefly makes a banjo like that.

I think a diddley bo or a banjolele would be cool. The only reservation I have is that the drum head can’t be adjusted or replaced.

Thanks for the suggestions! The adjustment is definitely a limitation. However, I suppose, technically, it could be replaced. Gourd banjos just have skins stretched across them which are then tacked in place and allowed to dry. The same is possible with this hoop if needed. I have also seen some folks use the plastic from soda bottles pinned in place and then heated with a heat gun to get them to shrink to become taught.

Steve's Strings good points. I have a banjolele project sometime in the future myself. I want to make a 5 string that has a tunnel for the 5th string.

Hey Steve. I remember seeing a kit that converts a tambourine into a 5 string banjo a while back but I can't seem to find it now. Ugh. Anyway, the kit included a tension ring that went under the tambourine head to give it more rigidity. It made me think the banjo bridge tension may be more than an average tambourine head can take. However, that was a 5 string kit. If you made a diddley bow, it would probably be okay, especially if you used a wider bridge. A tambourine banjo is definitely on my list of "someday" projects so I say go for it.

I’m wondering if a 3-string dulcijo may be the best?

@@stevesstrings5243 Dave Lynas have built a few of those. I don't think he did any extra to the tambourine but I could be wrong.

That would be rad to turn it into a banjo, but make sure you hit it first and say, "FLOOR GANG"
