I love that Tooie didnt fallow the usual sequal formula for the time of losing all previously obtained powers at the start of the game. Instead it builds upon the moveset already acquired in the first game.

Other than Canary Mary, I never quite got the newfound hate over this game. I liked everything Rare added to spice Banjo-Kazooie up, adding some new challenges to the game to where everything now isn't exactly straightforward. It's got that adventurous charm that I think really contributes to the fun experience of the franchise. I liked the new Jinjo sidequests. I like how you *keep* the music notes you collected to purchase moves from Jamjars. I like the interconnective nature of Grunty Industries. Most of the new bosses were great. I think the soundtrack's an artistic masterpiece. There are so many good qualities about this game that make me say it's a terrific sequel.

Everytime I start playing kazooie I stop for a moment and realize how much I'd rather be playing tooie and how many more fond memories I have with tooie over kazooie. Not that tooie is better exactly but i think it added what the series needed for the game to feel complete.

Banjo Tooie has always been my favorite as well. I love the interconnected and detailed worlds, the darker and more realistic setting and the "backtracking" (which is what makes this game special). The backtracking got me curios as a kid, as you could some times litterally see a part of the world you could not go to yet. Either that, or you could even see into another world. To this day I still miss that feature in games. It was a very clever way of making the player curios. It also functioned as an incentive to learn new moves and check every corner of the world. Loved the video!

As someone who also prefers Tooie to Kazooie (though I love both), this is an excellent video that does a great job of emphasizing Tooie’s strengths, such as the better level themes, the interconnected, lived in world, lowering the Jiggy requirement to reach the ending, and the slew of amazing additional powerups/transformations/ideas which highlight the ambition on display in this amazing sequel. Also, we so need a Banjo Kazooie/Tooie remake double pack on all modern consoles. Maybe Banjo Redooie? 😂

32:46 Great summarization regarding the negative perception of this game and the somewhat unfair apple and oranges comparisons between Tooie and the prequel game. The metroidvania comparison regarding the backtracking segment was spot on, I never honestly thought about it, but it is the same principle in game design and level design terms. For me, it was always a great exploration experience and led to one rewarding aha moment to the other whenever I realized how the paths of the game worlds were connected to each other. My friend and I just started to replay this game after almost more than a decade since childhood, and we were positively surprised how well the varying gameplay and the humor had aged (lots of great play of words and also mature humor was hidden between the lines of dialogues which we never noticed as kids), so we were able to appreciate this game in a completely new way. Also, thank you for pointing the dynamic ambient soundtrack out by showing those variations of the game world leitmotif. Fans generally appreciate Grant Kirkhope's compositions, but I do think that the music direction and the smooth transitions depending on the different segments of the game world in Tooie can be easily overlooked. For me, it was really ahead its time. I remember how much time I spent as a kid in front of the jukebox in Jolly Roger's Lagoon just to listen through all the variations (the water versions were often among my favorites), and it shaped my perception on ambient sound and how the choice of instruments can impact the association and imagination of settings and sceneries. My favorite aspect about it was that the boss enemies has a fast-paced version of those leitmotifs as their main theme which also fits their nature and personality, making them even more memorable. Peak music and game design. Taking all this into account while seeing how the game's criticism is often reduced to its backtracking aspect and "overly big world" and nothing more which ngl often sound like shallow hearsay impressions, it makes me wonder, how much of the actual game the people behind those negative reviews actually saw and played themselves back then

As seen in that parking-lot episode of Seinfeld, a lot of people relate to having a bad sense of direction/the inability to develop a mental map of an area. So even though the game gives you warp pads, people still struggle to find where they want to go (i.e. return to) and therefore in their hidden anger at themselves blame "worlds are too big" to easily criticise the game instead of actually trying to work on developing a better sense of direction in videogames.

Honestly this game was a huge improvement over the first game. 1999 DK64 came out and 2000 this game came out and was based on the DK64 engine in a way. I hum every single level of Banjo Kazooie/Tooie and DK64 which is a testament to Grant’s talent to make ear worms and certified hood classics. I’m also a Metroid fan and love the aspect of exploration so the backtracking is fun to me.

To me, the most appealing part of the Banjo games was never the platforming and moment-to-moment gameplay (which is still good), but the charm of the worlds and characters. Tooie focusing more on exploration and detailed interactions felt like it leaned towards the series' strengths, making the worlds and cast more organic while retaining the wit and wacky scenarios that made Banjo Kazooie engaging. If Bano Kazooie is like a theme park, where you go from ride to ride through a colourfully constructed world, Banjo Tooie is like a road trip through a new country as you talk with the locals and try to find your place around different landmarks and events. Which one a person likes more will come down to personal taste, but they both are good ways for an adventure to be laid out, with Tooie's interconnected world helping to define what a Banjo game is beyond a Mario 64-ese platformer.

I've only really watched the intro so far, but it's nice to see such a positive take on Banjo-Tooie! I will readily admit there are a couple small things I prefer about Kazooie (ie; Notes being individual, locating puzzles around the lair, Grunty's Lair in general) but I adore Tooie as well, if not slightly more I guess the larger levels can be a bit tedious to traverse at times, but I don't generally mind too much since I like every level's aesthetics - Terrydactyland might be my least favorite, but my opinion is still on the positive side. The new moves are awesome, and the tweak to old moves (such as the roll) are great too

If I'm being honest, I didn't even know people hated Tooie this much until a bunch of youtubers made videos about how frustrating they found the game and unfavorably compared it to Kazooie. Like a lot of the arguments I've seen made is that Tooie was nothing like Kazooie and they should've just done Kazooie again. My counter argument to that would be: then it would've been hated for just being the same game again. I enjoy Tooie a whole lot and I often remember begging my mother to rent it for me and each time I'd get a little further into the game. Then one day in the early 2000s we were at a gamestop and saw Tooie for like $15 [cart only] so you better believe I asked and then finally I owned Tooie and 100%ed it for the first time in my life. It's so satisfying because I viewed Tooie as this insurmountable game I could never 100% the way I did Kazooie. I do love Kazooie on it's own merits. It's a fun game to revisit and everytime I replay it, I ALWAYS 100% it. I'm approaching that same level with Tooie because I've only 100%ed it twice in my life. The only criticism I have against Tooie is something that wasn't even in it's control: The stop n swop rewards. When they finally implemented them into the XBLA version, I was super disappointed to find out that most of them were for Nuts n Bolts. Either way, it's nice to see more people finding Tooie to be a gem as opposed to a bad game where all you do is wait for things to happen. I also never understood that criticism either. Waiting in a video game is something you do regardless of however much gameplay it has. I do hope the game gets decompiled along with Banjo-Kazooie so that we can customize that sort of thing to create the definitive experience.

I perfectly agree with your statement, I do think that tooie is just better overall. But I’d like to use this comment as a sort of way to get out something that’s been really grinding my gears lately. I’ve heard a lot of criticism of this game that there’s a lot of backtracking needed in tooie, and in my opinion, kazooie has just as much backtracking, but more so unintentional than the sequel. So some context, I’ve been playing through both of the games recently, but most of the second game has been me suffering in the hub world. There’s been 4 or so separate instances where I’ve needed to be in a spot that requires banjo and kazooie to get something, an example would be where you enter the jigsaw pieces into freezeasy peak, only for you to need to return to the swamp area, get the crocodile, then go all the way back. And so that’s been my main gripe with the game, the fact that there’s no good fast travel throughout the lair also makes me rather upset.

4:41 Tooty was supposed to appear in Tooie, as early storyboards showed she was at least part of the opening but was probably cut due to the pointlessness of her character at that point in the series. Since a vengeful Grunty was more than enough of a reason to get the duo back in action.

23:43 the section where you run back-and-forth between all the character transformations gets MUCH worse if you’re a first-time player or haven’t played in a long time, since you probably don’t know how to get the roar. For, as I recall, the only time in either game, you have to talk to one of the enemies to learn a new move! Talk to a stegosaurus as a baby to learn the roar. So, you may end up running around like an idiot, changing to Mumbo to resize Humba’s Wigwam, changing back to BK, then transforming, over and over again, just to eventually FINALLY figure out to TALK to AN ENEMY!!! This is one of those things that likely makes players sour about the game. Much like with the Water Temple from Ocarina of Time, a pro can admit that the implementation was clunky, but will say it’s not that bad, but people remember when they were playing the first time (usually as a kid) and had to loop back around and slog through retracing their steps for an hour before finally finding, or looking up, the answer.

Depends for me. Better 3D platformer? I disagree there. The first game is packed with excitement in every moment. But if we’re comparing Kazooie as a platformer to Tooie as an adventure game, I think the gap is narrowed enough to make the case for Tooie. It is a pretty good one with lots of variety, character, and one of the best soundtracks on the console.

Lord woo fak fak scared the absolute crap out of little me. You don't understand how scary this game can be until you played it on an old crt with that default super contrasted setting where everything is dark. Scared me so much man. Same with the carnival it was so spooky and dark on my childhood crt. Same with N64 Zelda. The mood and atmosphere was just the bees knees.

tooie was far too ahead of the curve and no i'm not sorry to say that. it does have issues and definitely feels pretty overwhelming after kazooie but tooie's new upgrades and interconnected worlds just stole my heart. Rare proved then that if you think something can be done in a manner tooie probably CAN. did that game confuse me to no end and me getting lost? yes. did i rent that game one too many times at blockbuster and keep on finding random stuff i didn't know? yes. did i once not realize jolly roger's lagoon had a whole other level underneath the lake? yes. do i love dragon kazooie? yes. yes i love tooie, finally someone with some appreciation for the gem. tooie enthusiasts DO EXIST!!

Great review! I think Tooie is a much better game than Kazooie, but Kazooie is so much easier to pick up and play through. I love both of the games! By the way, Klungo's techniques in his boss fights are actually chosen random. It's possible for him to turn invisible on the first encounter and duplicate on his second. Or Duplicate on his third but grow big on the second, etc.

Tooie gang 😎 Both games are great but it baffles me that people that people hate on this game so much. It's a much more satisfying experience in my opinion, with quality of life improvements and (albeit maybe a biiit too much) added complexity. Kazooie laid the foundation yet I never feel the urge to go back to it after having beaten it twice when I could just replay Tooie for the 7th or 8th time. Tooie is way more charming and enjoyable of an adventure imo.

Banjo-Kazooie is Ocarina of Time and Banjo-Tooie is Majora's Mask. Most people arent ready to admit that the sequel is as good, if not better, than the original because it would go against the original feeling they had when they picked up the first game.

this And yet for some reason, people universally praise Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for being better than Super Mario Galaxy and Paper Mario respectively, despite the fact that I believe neither games improved on their originals enough to justify universal praise. At best, they are equal in quality, if not worse. Maybe bc the N64 kids would have been teens/adults when TTYD and SMG2 came out???

IMHO, Anyone who complains the a 3d collectathon takes too long to 100% completely misses the point on what makes 3d collectathons fun. It's about NOT needing to get everything and being able to have more freedom to progress throug the game. It's only when the game forces you to 100% if you want to finish it where it's a problem.

I never click on videos that discuss Banjo-Tooie in a negative light, cause I take that shit personally. You're damn right it's better, and it's always been my favorite videogame of all time. I've never met anyone in person that praises it like I do. Even if people keep dismissing this game as just another 3D Platformer, I'm just glad that at least Smash Bros. immortalized this franchise, which puts Banjo-Tooie on more people's radar.

The dark atmosphere was probably one of the hightlights of this game, cause it sure gave me a scare- even to this day I can't enter the Jinjo king palace without getting the chills. I even dare to say that Banjo Tooie is better than the first game.

It is better and you can immediately see why with Banjo's roll - you are given greater maneuverability in Tooie than Kazooie, in which iirc is only a roll in a straight line. The Tooie roll can be angled left-or-right.

To me the difference between Kazooie and Tooie is similar to Fable 1 and 2. There is more to do in both sequels, they are deeper more expansive games with more complex move sets and mechanics. However, Banjo Kazooie, like Fable 1, just feels cleaner and never outstays its welcome. Tooie has fantastic level design a fun story and it excellently expands on what was set up by the original. But the self contained nature of Kazooie will always be better for me to revisit. They both hit incredible highs but I feel Tooie just has more lows

I'm happy to see more love for tooie as time goes on! I didn't get to play tooie as a kid, only the first game and later on I played it expecting it to be annoying/bad like people had always said, but I ended up liking it. Yes, it's very big and some parts suck (canary mary obv and the train station stuff) but I thought it was a great game overall. I've beaten it twice. The inter connected worlds is cool and I thought it was neat tbh. Both banjo games hold up very well in my opinion, but I like platformers and collect-a-thon games a lot so maybe I'm biased lol

Personally, I think the reason the backtracking in a Metroid game is less intrusive than Tooie is that in a Metroid game, you get only around 10 or so moves to play with. In Tooie, you have 30+ moves, and any one of them could be the solution to a puzzle. For example, cooling the water in Hailfire Peaks. I think the most reasonable first thought is to use your Ice Eggs, but that's not it. Oh, there's ice all over the second half of the stage, it could be that, but no. Maybe I could transform into a snowball and cool it that way, nadda. What's the solution? A character I haven't met yet, in a stage I haven't played yet. Yes, Mildred tells you about her husband, but the ask was to save him, so I think not expecting that to be the solution, while a funny twist, is frustrating. And almost every world has at least one puzzle like this.

The first game is very simple, which is fine but not really what I'm looking to go back to. I love going back to Tooie because of how much more complex the game is. It's not a perfect game, I can't stand Grunty Industries and the later worlds feel too much like mazes at times. Overall it's still fun and makes me wish we could have gotten a true 3rd game in the same style.

How to make Threeie the best, part 1: Offer a good mix of playground and exploration. Offering worlds that bring the best of the first game's platforming and playground-style exploration and Tooie's exploration and scope would be perfect for a grand return to form.

Maybe, fighting them individually each: one as Banjo solo and the other as Kazooie solo (via split up mechanic) Also the potions Klungo drink are in completely random order. I feel the disconnect for this game was not being able to grab all the jiggies in one run. You had to backtrack almost every level. In a collecthathon we want to be able to find everything and move on to the next level. Only once does this happen in kazooie so it didn’t break the flow of collecting. Backtracking is good but in a collecthathon I feel it takes away from the game. In a game like resident evil I love backtracking because it helps you find stronger weapons for future bosses. This is why kazooie has more replay value since it flows better into collecting everything as that is the point of these games. With that said this is still a great game and you get a different experience from both games.

It’s very refreshing to hear a different opinion on these two games. I loved tooie so much as a kid, the worlds were more difficult to navigate so I spent a lot of time engrossed by the worlds. Not even to mention the multiplayer, oof man I remember my little brother and I playing the FPS game and like just running around the map and we would pretend that we had shops and make little bases in our favorite spots of the map. All of that is priceless idk, tooie really is a fantastic game. Just for my money tho I have to say kazooie edges it out by a bit. The atmosphere, more concise gameplay, the performance on the original N64. Man. And I really felt where you were coming from with “some people prefer the vibes of kazooie but it wouldn’t have been worthwhile to just rehash it” because I totally agree, hearing that argument yk. Never thought about it like that but it’s true. Great fucking games and great fucking vid :)
