I've been working on this one for a while to celebrate 100 covers done on this channel . And what better time than the end of this year for it: Banjovania , my complete tribute to Castlevania
Thanks to Mechanical Koopa for his casual speedrun footage especially recorded for this video. In addition to my original covers I also recorded the following themes :
The intro tune (Prologue )
The general boss fight theme ( Poison Mind)
The victory theme (Stage Clear)
Both Dracula fight themes (Nothing to loose , Black Knight)
The end victory theme (All Clear)
The death theme (Game Over ) - i play this right at the end of the video
The end theme, called Voyager which I decided to do in a completely different way than my usual acoustic instruments.
So that's essentially 6 new covers in one video .
Additionally I've re-synced all the sounds by hand for this , frame by frame. This took a while. I've toyed (and tried) with the concept of re-doing the sound effects too myself with instruments and objects but I was never happy with the result. Nothing felt satisfying and like they fit properly so I decided to leave the original sound effects.

That was an excellent "casual" run :) One funny thing I've noticed is that it seemed to get less and less casual as it went (starting with the jump above THAT bone pillar in the mummy level), like if old habits came back slowly. I didn't expect a crit on Dracula, hehe (the only real part where it had a big impact on the lenght of the music, I'd say). And obviously, thanks to Banjo Guy Ollie for the amazing covers. Both of your talents made a superb video.

I guess old habits do die hard. I have been speed running this game for a sub 11:40 time without the level 1 boss crit on the bat. I know it can be done! I made a theory TAS for it and the time for my route is 11:36 so I know a sub 11:40 can be done. It's just hard to play this and not speed run it. I just have been playing it too long I guess LOL

The Mechanical Koopa - your "casual" speedrun is still better than my act playing castlevania. Always sucked at 1. Beat pretty much every other castlevania easily but 1 always tried my patience for some reason. Nice job! This was a great coop effort.

This is awesome and deserves more views! This is the third time I've seen this now. You should definitely do more like this because has to be your best video yet. But I can imagine it must have taken a lot of work. Something that might be helpful if you do another similar video is if you're recording a speedrun like this on an emulator I'm pretty sure you can mute certain audio channels to turn off just the music so you then don't have to painstakingly put the sound effects back in.

well yes and no... I need the original tracks in the waveform as reference for when to trigger them . I'm trying to be frame accurate so I wouldn't be able to do it if the music tracks were disabled

You could also record a speed run as a series of inputs so that the emulator can actual replay the game the way you played it. That way you could have both, a version with music and effects, and one with just effects, both of the same run.

Liquidmetalrob I actually make my TAS runs both with save states and the TAS editor spreadsheet too. I like how you can do all frame perfect inputs and obsolete a run overnight lol. To date I've done maybe 25 or so TAS runs. Love making them.

Banjo Guy Ollie - your style is original and a lot different than the generic acts or "computer jockeys" that seems to fill the Magfest roster. With your original style, I think you could come with an entertaining stage presence that compliments your amazing musicianship. This comes from one long time musician to another. I've been writing music for nearly two decades, and even sold tons of beats to up and coming hip hop artists (some of whom actually became famous...kinda regret selling some of my best work for peanuts). It's rare that I get to come across someone doing something different, and you have some great skills, much of which I think you've still left untapped. If you sat down and thought about it, I can almost guarantee that you could come up with an entertaining live show that compliments your great playing. Hell, I never thought I'd love listening to anything played on a banjo but here we are. Lol. Keep it up. Definitely got talent and would be cool to see your renditions live... but what do I know. I'm just some random guy in the comment section on KZbin. Lol.
