Bank Station Just Got A Whole Lot Better! - Here's Why.

Despite TfL's currently dire finances. 2021 and 2022 have been big years for transport in London. Northern Line Extension to Battersea Power Station, Bank capacity upgrade, Elizabeth Line, Barking Riverside extension. Hopefully the Bakerloo Line extension will happen soon.

I'd hate to be pessimistic, but the Bakerloo line extension won't start anytime soon. It's a likely candidate for TfL's next project, but the funding issue persists. TfL might need to look at private developer funding as a potential source, much like the Northern Line Extension.

@@MannyAntipov Fully agree. Tbh i think developer funded is the future for most TfL projects going forwards for the indefinite future. to a certain extent why wouldn't they, its effectively free for TfL other than running costs.

Considering how this is a relatively small capacity upgrade (don’t get me wrong, it’s big, but I mean it in the grand scheme of things, because when compared with Battersea Power Station Station Station, Crossrail and whatnot, it is) in an operating railway, it seems TfL did this soft opening on a Sunday afternoon on purpose, so a few KZbinrs could go there and do the media coverage for them… ;)

TFL did really did kept this as a secret opening date and to open the new S/B platform a few days earlier than it was to be completed on schedule... Either way, that's a big upgrade for the project, but won't be that much busier than it was before covid hit

I never get why they don't redo the entry to the old platform to make the entry larger. It looks stupid how one direction gets massive entrances and the other is a single file tiny entrance

I agree, they should have really widened them. the fact that they haven't suggests that something substantial is in the way preventing it being knocked through. Building foundations? I don't know, however considering the cost of the project i would be surprised if this was not a discussion that they had.

On the other hand, if it gets too crowded on that platform or at the entrance, people can safely enter through the cross-passage instead. With proper crowd management, likely by leading people coming from the new southbound platform to a different exit, capacity is effectively doubled.

New TFL stations and tunnels seem to have all the ornament and charm of a self-storage facility. Crossrail, the new parts of Bank, they both have lots of featureless white walls and solid colours. Bring back the ornate ironwork and distinctive tile patterns!
