In honour of Tony's 70th birthday today I bring my fellow Banksians something I've been wanting to upload for about five years actually. This is all of Tony's interview bits from the 'Sum of the Parts' documentary from 2014. There are some pretty funny bits in here I must say.
Note: I didn't want to have the video broken into two parts but KZbin was being difficult. Combining the two parts into one ultimately led it to being blocked worldwide where having it broken into two parts allowed it to be seen...go figure. Pretty stupid if you ask me...

They were very close friends at Charterhouse. It's unfortunate that the tensions of the band drove a wedge between them, but as they say in these interviews, they were very young and headstrong. The early Genesis (including Ant) had, if anything, too much talent for one band. It was inevitable that disputes would occur. Genesis didn't become a stable molecule until Peter and Steve had left.

Excellent. They all played their parts in creating and performing some of the greatest music in rock history - that I doubt will ever be equaled. Too many machines in music now. The times when musicians had to write and play everything themselves are sadly gone. But we have their albums and concerts, to remind us just how good it was.

I have loved everything you guys have done ever since, as Genesis or individually. You have been a huge part of my life, thank you so much for the immense pleasure you have brought to me with music that I still can't do without. Anyone who doesn't love and appreciate your music is missing something in their lives. I was the guy who bought 'A Curious Feeling' and I still enjoy it.I wish you had persevered with Ray Wilson, 'Calling All Stations' was a brilliant album, but the band should have had a different name, in my humble opinion. Good luck with the tour later this year.

I came to them slightly later. The first Genesis song I heard was Squonk, listening to the radio with my Dad's headphones - and I knew from the opening bars that I had found my favourite band for life - which has never changed. In concert they have never failed to deliver. Seeing them at Knebworth in 1978 was one of the best days of my life. When the green lasers shot out of the stage and danced on the clouds (they had to get permission from the nearby Luton Airport to do that!) as they began the instrumental section of One For The Vine I experienced an ecstasy seldom since matched.

So this was my chance/last resort: themusicalbox.net/lldob/ kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZ27ZaCleb54o6M * No doubt you knew that already so this is for whom it may concern. over-talented guys strongly arguing over music choices isn't ego fueling infighting, this is what happens with every huge global bands, different opinions and directions are normal at that level of success. Sting of The Police straightforwardly rejected all songs or ideas from Andy and Stuart saying it was shit, especially in the later albums, Sting actually even engaged in real physical fights with Stuart, Genesis never had that level of ego fighting. We may have different point of views and it's very ok, lets respect each other views. best regards.

I can’t think of a band that added drama and spectacle to their music and live performances as effectively and as EARLY as Genesis did. Their importance is vastly underestimated.

I used to make these mixtapes in high school and I would call them ‘Sunday Afternoon Genesis’. Inevitably I would most often choose the songs that were penned by Tony Banks because of their unusual chord sequences and unique sound. I went to an all boys high school, so Sunday afternoons were a bit despairing for me knowing that I couldn’t see my girlfriend until the next Friday. The music of Genesis sort of softened the blow and was something I could relate to, especially the Tony Banks work. Later in college I got my mind blown by A Curious Feeling and later still by the Banks classical albums. Thanks goes to Tony for being an ever-present musical influence in my life.

@@timechaser5674 Let's not get too carried away and overly revere British music. Although the UK is teemed with very talented artists and musician, its pop scene is a revolving door of one-hit wonders and flash-in-the-pan butt wigglers, even moreso than the US. Genesis has definitely left an indelible mark in music history. Even during their "hits" years, they always educated new listeners and kept their old fans content by dedicating a good portion of their live shows to their Gabriel-era material. There are so many bands who've abandoned their past, almost as if they eschew it, without a care to their fans who've been there since their beginnings. Regardless of anyone's opinion of Genesis, everyone should appreciate how they value their past along with the present.

Listen to "Duke" intently--the last (great) gasp from Genesis--the closing number is musically stellar.

IMO and with hindsight, and of course it's far too easy to say, but listening for years to all musicians chat it always strikes me at how little they seriously listened to fans and their passions. Not surprising , however, if enough people in or close to the group had had the nous better albums would have been produced and bands might have stuck it out.Gabriel would have been more sympathetically understood, perhaps Ant would have stayed, even as a studio musician and writer. Collins made a special first album but for me never reproduced that. There are good songs along the way but I think he should have concentrated on Genesis and complied the best songs for less regular solo LP's.Would probably have saved personal relationships.Money speaks but also makes mediocre music unfortunately. Rarely do great solo albums ever get repeated in quality. Banks and Rutherford's firsts were classics but never to be repeated.Gabriel's collection is very good, and there are some wonderful songs along the way, but probably only produced one great album, the third. Hackett is perhaps the exception for producing Spectral Mornings, an album that would not have been produced by or in Genesis, and, ironically, Defector. Genesis lost its guitar character when he left but he has continued the spirit of the 70's Genesis - good for him but also what many of the fans adore. Some cold truth spoken by Steve in the first part of these interviews even though Steve is resentful.

There is so much great music out there. Musicians should do what they want and it's up to us whether we like it. True, the fans should come first, but not at the expense of an artist. Steve Hackett has made what 25 studio records? And most high quality. He was constrained in the band. Are you serious about Gabriel? Security is one of the greatest albums ever. I think you'd find that most people would love Security. Although So sold tons and you may call it a sell out, how can you say that's not a fantastic record? Every band member in their solo material has a distinct style. Ant Phillips has mastered the art of quiet tasteful music. The last thing anyone needs is an album of great musicians and no chemistry. Trick of the Tail and W&W are wonderful records, but if the four of them stayed together it would have gotten worse. To your point - I cannot think of a band where the individual members put out such fantastic solo material. Genesis put out great albums with Gabriel - Nothing lasts forever. Gabriel and Hackett left 45 years ago for crying out loud. The last sentence - Hackett was resentful, he was unhappy. And rightly so. But it's Tony's show and that's the way it goes.

Tony really doesn't like Peter. Peter knows it. So he fucks with Tony a lot. Because he can.

It's so damn political being in a band. Everything is a negotiation and some always feel marginalized.
