Tony Banks 'Sum of the Parts' Part I

In honour of Tony's 70th birthday today I bring my fellow Banksians something I've been wanting to upload for about five years actually. This is all of Tony's interview bits from the 'Sum of the Parts' documentary from 2014. There are some pretty funny bits in here I must say.
Note: I didn't want to have the video broken into two parts but KZbin was being difficult. Combining the two parts into one ultimately led it to being blocked worldwide where having it broken into two parts allowed it to be seen...go figure. Pretty stupid if you ask me...

Tony's incredible melodic gift collaborating with Gabriel's vocals is what largely made the early Genesis such a creative confluent. Here they both state the exact thing.

Yes. But the subtle flavors and nuances came from Steve Hackett. He brought a dynamic that complimented Tony and vice versa. Once Hackett left the flavour completely changed...even when Genesis played the old songs it wasn't the same and Streumer would take it into other directions that would change the purity of the song that Hackett brought to it...listen to Hackett Genesis revisited for an authentic experience of the original sound and see for yourself what he brought to the table. Can Utility And The Coastliners was a Hackett inspired song which had that old Genesis flavour to it.

@@maureyrca You're preaching to the choir. Hacketts guitar made early Genesis sound what it did - up till he left after Wind and Withering. From there they went downhill.. I was just commenting on how Gabriel and Banks agreeing on how they contributed off each other.. I saw Steve Hackett do the Genesis Revisited several years ago.

@@DanielRed2 Oh yes they are! Not to be confused....... I don't hate Peter! I simply prefer Genesis without him, but I can still tell you they had no rivals with Peter on board........................ P.S.: Tony is God, but I strongly disagree with him on 'The Lamb'... I think he's got bad memories of those recording sessions and he's never got through that... My least favourite Genesis album (cutting off 'From Genesis...', 'Genesis', 'Invisible Touch', 'We Can't Dance' and 'Calling All Stations') is FOXTROT. I somehow get lost in many parts of that album. I cut off the aforementioned albums just because they're generally considered 'inferior'... but what if I told you I prefer 'We Can't Dance' over 'Foxtrot'? Honestly speaking, I also prefer 'Invisible Touch' to 'Foxtrot'............ 'Genesis', instead, is probably my least favourite album, but I'm cutting 'From Genesis...' and 'Calling...' off again..................................... P.S.: mind you: 'Abacab' is in my top ten.

Well, the looks of Banks and Rutherford says it all really. Everytime Steve speaks, they create an awkward atmosphere with looks of disbelief. After I heard about his anger and feud with Paul McCartney over him saying to his wife, “our little Phil wants an autograph” when they were all backstage which story Phil obviously used to sell books, I lost interest. I never met any of the others but I have spoken with Steve several times. We all have a dark side but Steve has never acted “dark” in any conversation I’ve been a part of. He explores some dark themes in his music. He’s the nicest and most personable musician I’ve ever met, and I’ve met a lot of musicians.

Paolo Sacchetti there’s more to why Peter left than The Lamb - some other issues converged. I don’t think they had an issue with doing a concept album as much as Peter taking control of the concept, which wasn’t how they wrote music before. But regardless, I think they would have carried on together if it weren’t for all the other issues that had arisen between Peter and the rest of the group. It was just too much happening at once.

China 1984 Steve was lured into appearing in this documentary by the producers promising Steve they’d focus on his solo career as well as his Genesis years. They interviewed and filmed Steve talking about his solo career, as promised, and then every bit of that part of the interview was edited out of the final cut. Steve said in an interview he could not recommend the documentary to fans of his solo music for this reason. So yeah, he felt cheated (because he WAS cheated), and was naturally upset by the final result in that he was the only member of Genesis whose solo career was not represented. Who could blame him? I felt it was a huge slap in Steve’s face on a personal level not only because the promise made to Steve was broken but because Anthony Phillips’ solo career WAS covered and he was with Genesis for what? Two albums? Give me a f-king break. It has been said that the producers made the choice to cut Steve’s solo career footage but I’m not so sure it wasn’t purposely suggested or demanded by Tony, knowing how Steve’s guitar work was mixed way down on Second’s Out and Tony “joked” how Steve’s departure from Genesis was why this was the case in the 1990 documentary “Genesis - A History.” I love Tony as a musician but his admitted control issues make it look like he has a tough time forgiving people. Tony loves Peter but you could see he still harbored some resentment after so many years.

Obviously it's the Tony Banks band until Phil surpassed his relevance. Steve Hackett said little but he's the most prolific of all of them despite what you think of his music. He's authentic, truly progressive and doesn't need to be coddled with qualifications from these guys or so called critics. I saw him just a few weeks ago on Long Island, with the onset of the coronavirus upon us, he and his band were excellent and the energy between the audience, Steve and the band was uplifting. Everything that Genesis once was is unfortunately only a memory in one form or another.
@DavidLazarus

Steve's music has remained more authentically in the vein of classic Genesis than any other (former) members' music. Especially from Dark Town to present even though Dark Town has a bit of an urban feel to it; if you know what I mean. Steve is an underrated guitarist and composer. Also, he often allows other musicians to take the spotlight both live and in the studio. I like Tony, but I haven't really cared for his orchestral works. Peter makes fantastic use of orchestra on New Blood.

@@DavidLazarus I loved Genesis, the Peter Gabriel era exclusively and the Steve Hackett era as well, since I was a young teen. I was a champion for them, Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett as solo artist, with friends, family,colleagues and acquaintances, anybody who would have the conversation essentially. I was a big fan of Tony Banks as a unique and talented writer and keyboard player, especially his progressions, chords and melodic themes for progressive changes in a song, like a journey, sort of cinematic journey at times. Reality is though, they are just people with egos, agendas, visions, conflicts, and other human traits. Tony was clearly the last hand on the rudder as the Genesis ship was sailing. Good, bad or otherwise it's was a matter of will's, the Genesis band experience. Tony's tended to be the strongest for the most part. Once Peter exacted his will with the Lamb era, their fate was determined, Peter had to leave to be Peter Gabriel. Steve had to leave to be Steve Hackett, not the Ensign on the Genesis ship with Captain Anthony Banks portraying Captain Bligh while Genesis sailed into the ocean of op/schlock noise to top charts and create a folly of an iconic progressive music legacy.

@@DavidTimberDKT - The real shame of it is that the Phil era ended at what was then its peak. I won't deny that there are a couple of filler tracks on We Can't Dance, but most of the album is pretty solid. Better overall, IMO, than Invisible Touch. Ray Wilson is a great vocalist and musician. However, IMO, CAS would have been much better with Jack Hues singing (in case you don't know, he sang most vocals on Tony's Strictly Inc album).

The contempt on Rutherford's face towards Hackett at 05:27 is much more pointed than from the other two. Hard one to figure out Rutherford - never seems upfront in the power struggles but he told Chester T that he would have no involvement in the CAS album and it was TB who rang Ray Wilson and others to apologise for the tour cancellation. I'd trust Banks' blunt manner much more.

Well this is certainly an interesting conversation. :-) Genesis fan since '77 (Seconds Out was my first album) and I basically stayed with the group through "Abacab." Loved going back to get reacquainted with the Gabriel-era catalog. Watching the "family sculpting" here as my counselor friends would say is fascinating. Interesting to see Peter deferring to Tony even today . . . and I sure needed a ski jacket once Steve started to speak and the rest of the group really "iced him out." haha Still my favorite band of all time and was privileged to be the Hollywood Bowl 13 October 2007 for their final performance (at least until the English dates later this year). As Salocin says, this sounds like a group therapy. You can feel and see that resentment is still there. On a musical level, I think D. Stuermer is a virtuoso, but he's not in the same spirit as the others. I think he doesn't understand the music of Genesis. Maybe because he's an American. Anyway, for me, Genesis stops with Wind and wuthering. All the albums that came afterwards are those of another band.
