Love the consistency of the tests and detailed comparison!

I'd like to see measurements on a well used raw carbon fiber face compared to a new one. In my experience they get smoother in the sweet spot over time. I bought an unapproved CRBN paddle and it was rougher than lower case CRBN and Electrum. After a month and a half the sweet spot smoothed out similar to an approved CRBN, Electrum and Joola. My Electrum became smoother after several months, smoother than Joola or a new Franklin Ben Johns. Pros can get an unfair advantage by being able to have a new paddle for every tournament but for amateurs who use a paddle for many months I think they will be within the legal limits in the long run. Another good test would be to compare roughness of the sweet spot to the unused bottom section of a well used raw carbon fiber paddle.

I haven’t seen any numbers that stood out. The Electrum Pro I tested was used, but clean as could be. It tested the highest I’ve seen thus far.

The reason the banned CRBN paddle tested relatively low is because you tested the wrong banned CRBN paddle. CRBN has said all along that their earlier production runs with the lower case font "crbn" were all conforming and only on the later production runs when they switched to the upper case font "CRBN" was there a manufacturing issue that led to the surface roughness being non-conforming. The USAPA banned them ALL because CRBN had no way to prove exactly when the paddles fell out of compliance. I'm not surprised at all that the one you tested was very similar to paddles that have passed USAPA testing within the pasted couple of months.

It was still banned. CRBN couldn’t confirm when it started, so the change in spec could have happened in the lower case design. Otherwise, that would have been an easy demarcation line for what paddles needed to be banned.

great stuff, i'll wait here and sip my coffee while i await the USAPA to do ANYTHING that makes sense in this whole debacle. i have a feeling i will be sipping very cold coffee...

Well, hopefully I can help shed light on some of these topics. Thanks for watching!

What grit "sandpaper" meets the standard? I see 400 grit is 30 microns, will that satisfy?

This is eye-opening that paddles are being banned over failing by just a few micrometers. A human hair is around 50 micrometers and a spiders web silk thread is only 2-3 micrometers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micrometre

Agreed but you have to put a limit somewhere. Otherwise people would slap on some 60grit sandpaper to their paddles and a ball would shredded within a match or two.

I think we may all know why only one brand got banned… just saying.

Only a professional on a closed course can measure. Do not try this at home! Lol!
