As much as hip hop has always been divisive in Africa, it has also been well accepted by many young people. However, it's still rejected by many other youth especially those with a very religious background (Religion is VEEEERY respected in Africa, or at least in my country, Zambia ). I think the real problem is that we don't fully understand foreign art forms before making a decision on how they should be approached.

Here in South Africa we have had 24 years of democracy after a regime of brazen censorship. I think because we are still so conscious of the damage censorship does to societies, we wouldn't let something like this fly on a national scale. However, we do have a new genre called Gqom, which the KwaZulu Natal provincial government has tried to muzzle from mainstream radio because of perceptions that it glorifies drug life. But the kids love it and as a result one of its artists (Babes Wodumo) has gotten so big that she is now on the Black Panther official soundtrack. Chinese kids: keep rapping!
@TheCompanyMan7 жыл бұрын
Khulekani Magubane whoa. That’s super dope. Does the music glorify drugs? That’s for the info yo. Never knew any of that
@khulekanimagubane91537 жыл бұрын
Sure. The best way to describe Gqom is "African Electro", perhaps with a bit of spoken word thrown in. Nothing as lyrically deep or sophisticated as hip hop though. There are references that authorities and parents are suspicious of. One of Babes Wodumo's first hits was a song called Mercedes. Sounds innocent at first glance, until you realise Mercedes is also a Durban slang word for Ecstasy, then it becomes a game of "is she talking about the car or the drug"? It's a pretty fascinating dynamic, as any music whose lyricism is infused with ambiguity is. And, of course, the people who dance to Gqom the best or listen to it the most happen to take these kinds of drugs.

Hip Hop, by virtue of it's origins and it's very nature, is anti-authoritarian. Since China is a highly authoritarian nation it makes sense that it's leaders would reject Hip Hop. Free speech is a core value in the US but the same can't be said for most other countries.
@TheCompanyMan7 жыл бұрын

drk2face Yes and no , the only government that can deny everything you say is a dictatorship meanwhile authoritarian government has some free speech allowance as long as it is respectfull and it is not attacking its rules. Meanwhile Hip-hop is indeed the way of people using it to speak out , in our modern era Hip-hop is used in a way disrespecting everything that people stand for aka using drugs , hoes are the top of playa stand and many retarded uses of "free speech" I would highly agree with China banning a certain version of this so called "Hip-hop" we are faced with right now . People have forgotten what hip-hop is actually about and that is going to bring more problems for us classic hip-hop lovers .
@YTofuable7 жыл бұрын
Hip Hop today is trash. What's anti-authoritarian about sniffing drugs? What's virtue about disrespecting women? You can be a good student with straight A's, but the moment you go robbing someone, you're bad. Origins only count as much, it's how you are and what you do NOW that define you. Hip Hop in China becomes a bad influence, so it needs to be stopped. What bad influence? Well, the culprit artist, PG One, actually committed to ADULTERY to a MARRIED celebrity that triggered the ban. His act caused Chinese ppl on social media a month of time talking about it, mostly criticizing of course, and then Chinese govt came in & issued the ban. The artist himself is the example result of hip-hop's bad side's influence: Degenerated Morality. This ban is more for restoring moral standards for the young gen. Here's another hip-hop artist. Check out this song & you may think twice about hip-hops in China: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpvOXpivhd5np9E

I don't blame that Chinese rapper for apologizing in such an awkward way. China is a one-party communist country, the government may not be as totalitarian as it used to be but the Chinese officials are still pretty unfamiliar with such things as freedom of speech and so on. I mean, in such unfree undemocratic country, they could threaten or even torture that rapper to say exactly what the party desired and blame it all on foreign influences because it is always bright and sunny in the People's Republic of China... It is a sort of a miracle that they didn't ban hip hop sooner....

A.J THE KID RAPPER mumble rap is used extremely poorly and only used in songs about drugs and rich life . It is very rare to find an artist who is using mumble rap to give his message but give an actually message. Don't forget back when Hip-hop was becoming more popular , artists call their songs as either poems that need to be broken down by people to understand or songs that want people to feel them.

A.J THE KID RAPPER hip hop is suppose to evolve, not devolve. The first hip hop songs have nursery rhyme schemes and like 2 drums for the entire beat too. This mumble stuff adds nothing to the culture, and is in no way innovative nor interesting. Many mumble rappers admit they write their entire songs in about half an hour, and are completely carried by their producer making catchy beats.

First things first, yes that doggystyle insert was amazing back in the day. LoL. China is a unique beast case, even within Asia. The party holds a an iron fist over all culture within their boarders. My experiences there have always been mixed. Economically and technologically they have done some amazing things, but culture as a whole still feels very stiff. You hinted at it when you talked about the behind the scenes pressure going on, all very true. In other parts of Asia we see much less crackdown on music and sentiment. Even in countries where there is a military regiem in power there are less constraints on hip hop than in China. But when your whole system is underpinned by state control over everything a government needs to keep tight control. A musical medium like hip hop could easily be used to spread a message of descent. At the end of the day music is powerful in a way that even the most authoritarian governments fear, and for good reason.

There's nothing wrong with preserving one's own cultural value, identity & heritage. PG One committed ADULTERY with a MARRIED celebrity which triggered this WHOLE banning, while GAI was later discovered to have a hoodlum history since child with an arrest record for stabbing someone at the age of 13. Do you like to hang out with this kind of ppl? Do you wish your lil' sister, your daughter, to get close to this kind of ppl? Do you wish your son, or you yourself, to look up to this kind of ppl as role models or GOAT? PG One's scandal has triggered a nation-wide discussion on this genre of music & its impact on moral degeneration for over a month before Chinese government stepped in & released the ban. This ban is more about reset MORALITY than cast iron fist. There are so much more WAY better things to learn from the West, yet the young gen picked misogyny & drug culture? These should be the LAST of them. Your experience there doesn't make you understand the culture because you use POLITICS to look at things, same as the Western media. They always interpret things from China through a political lens. Like this time, for More than A MONTH of ppl SPITTING to PG One's sex scandal ALL OVER Chinese social media, NO ONE HERE EVER mentioned it; but the moment Chinese government stepped in, it's Everywhere. Oh look another clampdown on freedom of expression! NO, this time, it's really about MORALITY. Of all the genres of music, Hip-Hop is the only one got banned. And you sir generalized to ALL music types? That's not exactly fair, isn't it? Being rebellious doesn't always mean good. Check this hip-hop song out, you'd probably appreciate the ban a bit better... or not :):) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpvOXpivhd5np9E

So from that perspective i can see why a government as draconian as the one in China would want to ban it, and why the people would want to embrace it. If you’re a government that wants control over everything then freedom of expression is a bad thing.

To make a message short, there will ALWAYS be people who make art. Even if it’s outlawed, even if it’s “not socially acceptable”, or even if it’s not profitable, there will always be people making art. It applies now and most likely for the rest of time. Hip Hop will live on in China I think because they have ghettos and Street Kids looking to get away from the crime and censorship isn’t infinite because of constant boundary pushing. I don’t think (I don’t remember his name) should have apologized but he had to do what he had to do. Whatever the case, the above still applies. That Death Grips vid will be awesome! But if you don’t talk obsessively about The Money Store like I do in conversation than I’m (not) unsubscribing!

I suspect the pressures that are imposed upon artists in China are not directly comparable to the American censorship situation. Granted, there are some similarities and exploring that in this video was great. But as a popular artist in America, it's not likely that your family will disappear overnight and no one will know what happened to you. Look at the struggles of Ai Weiwei if you need an example of how non-conformant artists can be treated. He's a very high profile example, so there's a lot of public information about his case.

I feel you. But hip-hop has been turned against us. Especially since Hollywood got it's hands on it. Dolores Tucker was right. And Ice-T is full of shit. Most people have been led astray by commercial rap. And inmates don't give a fuck about gangster rappers, because they know how destructive the message is. China's government is corrupt, but art should not be about bullshit; as it is in the case of gangster rap.

I always find it problematic when the state decides what is and isn't ok for the people without consulting the public itself. I say this because power tends to favour and prioritise that which reinforces itself. Art, which obviously includes hip hop, is often at its best when it speaks truth to power rather than simply reinforcing it. If 'the state' was genuinely democratic whether we're talking US, China or UK all this chat about 'rap lyrics' wouldn't be a problem. Fact is, it has the potential the inspire and overthrow a lack of democracy which is why these statist ball bags are getting their panties in a twist. The debate is broadly a red herring. Rap is largely a reflection of the culture for which it was developed in. If that means cutthroat gun violence and misogyny that's because we got peeps growing up I'm a world where those things are standard. You don't change it by banning people from openly expressing themselves. You change it by improving their way of life. A more positive lifestyle and outlook leads to more positive lyricism...

The Company Man Totally agree, but it also cost $$££ to bail out failed financial institutions like the banks. It also cost $$$££ to fund and create the technology that made Apple so prosperous as an another example. Fact is wealth is never created by individuals in a vacuum. It's created collectively. And in a more ideal world, the people would decide where that money should be invested. Dropping P to help folks have a more positive way of life is arguably a solid investment. Poverty arguably costs society financially as much as anything else haha... All depends on priorities and how much say you think people should have on where their money gets invested...

This time it is quite the public's will. The Western media didn't report this, but the whole thing started More than A MONTH ago when PG One, the culprit "artist", was exposed for committing adultery with a married celebrity last Dec. Then the whole country was criticizing him & his music across social media for weeks, before the Govt finally stepped in & issued the ban. It's not like the Govt all of sudden with nothing better to do just decided on a whim to ban it. After the ban was issued, ppl on Chinese social media mostly showed their supports. So... you can say this ban actually reflects people's will.

@nicholasseamans49467 жыл бұрын
"Falun Gong or Falun Dafa is a modern Chinese spiritual practice that combines meditation and qigong exercises with a moral philosophy centered on the tenets of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance." It's a culture outside of mainstream china which has been a target of the state. The exercise practices are often broken up by the police like a riot is here.

This is a deep topic, I'm so glad you're broaching it (but like you said, it gets dicey in translation). Minorities in Europe, who have the trauma of colonization have been using hip hop as a platform in similar ways. Algerian french hip hop is a legit sub genre. In Israel and Palestine, hip hop emerged as a platform on both sides of the debate. What's fascinating, which you get at at the end with the wack apology, is that other countries don't have our unique history of building a country on African slavery. Trauma here and trauma elsewhere is different, and if hiphop is revolution music borne out of the need to break trauma's bounds, then it should (and does) sound different in different places. Plus, the smack down the man provides in the face of that resistance will also sound different (as will the co-option of the sound)! I don't know enough contemporary Chinese history to be completely sure, but it definitely sounds like the specter of a commercialism uncontrolled by Ping's party is scaring the powers that be. Great stuff as always TCM!

Something similar happened in Puerto Rico, in the early 90s a couple of politicians banned rap & reggaeton from the radio and they wanted to remove the albums from store. Its funny because some rappers when from being super gangsta to making pop/romantic rap after that happen. It didnt last tho, and after a year everything when back to normal.

Jorge Diaz the closing quote offers an alternative
@asho3457 жыл бұрын
Jorge Diaz It's not wrong. Hip hop is very much influenced by some of the worst qualities of Western capitalism. Some rappers will talk about fighting the system, but truth is hip hop along with all the wealth it accumulates are products of that same system it despises. Until hip hop becomes self aware, it is not in a position to be telling other countries what to do with their culture.

My take away: Hip-hop is about to come under fire internationally. The Supreme Court is the ONLY institution than can not openly discriminate against Black culture. Rap is here to stay, regardless of who tries to stop it, "the Hip-hop won't stop"!

Yung Chubbz So what? Good, the less culture vultures the better. Ban Hip Hop in Korea too. Keep Hip Hop to the American culture where it was born.

@the_yungchubbz7 жыл бұрын
vdotme Hip-hop is not dead. You're not tuned in properly. I stated that the Supreme Court can not "openly" discriminate. Black People are under fire all around the world, however the only degrees of separation that We as Black People should be worried about, are the degrees of separation from black person to black person. We are severely divided, and unity is the first step towards any solution.
@the_yungchubbz7 жыл бұрын
Jupiter Stars You can't be serious. Hip-hop is not supposed to be locked down to this continent! It's supposed to help mold and shape the world, make it a better place. Hip-hop has brought the world together in so many ways, on so many occasions, from the music, dance, fashion, etc. It's given young, Black entrepreneurs a channel through which to acquire wealth, or even just make a living. Lock it down to the U.S. - there goes the $!
@vdotme7 жыл бұрын
Yung Chubbz ✊✊✊ with you on unity. We differ on openly discriminating. The number of cops who took paid leave for shooting innocent black men suggests the rot in the system as a whole. If the supreme were ready to rule evenly a lot of cases would get there and the perpetrators would adjust their behaviour out of self interest. And that's just shootings........if you examine injustice across the board you can't see anything other than bias.

Another great video. I feel like this issue and this cycle are not exclusive to rap, they apply to every revolutionary form of music. When jazz became popular in the 1930s, people condemned it as vulgar and dangerous, and said it encouraged teens and young adults to misbehave, as well as condemning the dancing that went along with it. They even called it the devil’s music. Fast forward ~25 years, and jazz has become an integral part of American culture, and is growing rapidly in other countries. It is considered high art, and has in some ways become corporatized. But there is a new music star on the scene, Elvis Presley. His rock’n’roll music upset parents everywhere. They said it caused juvenile delinquency, they said it made teens have sex. They banned it from radio stations, and burned records. When Elvis went on the Ed Sullivan show, they only showed him from the waist up because they thought it would drive teens to obscenity. 30 years later, rap and heavy metal are causing waves. Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center ate pushing for the record industry to start labeling records the same way the MPAA labels movies. In fact, they even get Congress to hold a hearing to investigate “porn rock,” and one senator says “things have changed since the days of Elvis.” Closer to the modern day, that 80s rock is beloved by dads everywhere, and is about as commercial as you can get. Rap has become the new enemy. They blame it for teen drug use, teen pregnancy, juvenile delinquency, and more. In fact, the American Pediatric Association said in their policy statement, issued in 2009, that rap music has been shown to correlate with higher rates of drug use and lower academic performance in teens. They didn’t revise this statement until 2016. As absurd as that is, this is what happens. Music pushes boundaries, which makes the older generation upset. The older generation blames problems with youth on things that they don’t like, which is almost always the music. And then the kids grow up and it happens all over again.

In Canada we have not seen the same level of political resistance to the genre. In fact our native communities express themselves freely (yet promoted on a low scale). Neil Young has historically attacked various groups as well. Our provocative hip hip is figuratively the tree falling in the forest where only those it speaks to hear it. The culture overall in our country is to not attack, offend or rock the boat with anyone so there really haven't been recent cases of overt government sensorship. Although we are permitted to say what we want, it is the private sector (many of our employers) who also enforce good language or behavior and you would risk your job if any of your art is offensive to a group. In my opinion that is what keeps those parties in check. I can't say if that is a good or bad thing. It keeps peace while sacrificing expression...it's all happening.
