Rain On Me was also banned in Ireland in 2020. “Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande's 'Rain on Me' may be a hit, but some Irish radio stations have decided to ban the track from their airwaves. The reason? There's been non-stop rain in Ireland since the song's release back in May.” And I believe Kesha’s Die Young was also banned from radio in 2012, following a school shooting. 😣 just bad timing. It’s crazy how MTV always banned female artists and black hip hop artists for the simplest things or things that are needed to be talked about I remember growing up as a kid in the 2000s and early 2010s Eminem was one of their most popular artists he had videos that were controversial and problematic but were heavy played on MTV and BET I believe prior to Taylor’s 2022 VMA win for all too well short film Eminem was the artist with the most video of the year wins Also thank you for starting the video with the legendary jazz queens and the first queens of controversy Nina Simone and Billie Holiday

True! It’s interesting because MTV always was about shock factor and explicit-ness too but only when it wanted to be. The one I remember from back in the day was when they wouldn’t play Christina Aguilera’s Can’t Hold Us Down video for minor sexuality when the whole point of the video was double standards between men and women. 🙄 I’m sure there must have been issue with the Dirrty music video as well in that case.
@Kevin-rg3yc
@Kevin-rg3yc Жыл бұрын
@@bluelightvisions right they did the same to the dirty video and they did the same thing to Britney too they only played the toxic video during night time and this was one of the biggest factors to why toxic didn’t go number one on the billboard hot 100 despite going number one in literally every other country it charted in outside the USA.
@AngeBiampandou
@AngeBiampandou Жыл бұрын
@@Kevin-rg3yc Toxic went number one who US pop radio tho. But 2004 was pretty much the year of Usher and hip hop, rnb and crunk. He was number one for like 28 weeks on the billboard 100 as soon as Yeah topped the charts for 12 weeks and then he replaced himself with Burn (8 weeks). I looked it up on billboard and Britney was also competing against a lot of heavyweights in thr spring of 04 with the likes of Mario Winans I Don't Wanna Know, another chart topping worlwide hit (number 2), Evanscence's My Immortal (number 7), Marron 5's breakout hit "This Love" (number 5), Jay-Z's Dirt Off Your Shoulder (number 5), Ludacris Splash Waterfalls (number 6), Beyoncé's Naughty Girl (number 3), Alicia Keys's If I Ain't Got You (number 4). The competition was stiff but number 9 for a global hit as huge as "Toxic" is baffling. That's one of her signature hits. Easily top 5 most iconic, classic and popular record Brit song ever with BOMT, Ooops, Slave 4 U and Gimme More. Its top 2 tbh

As a long time Kpop fan I think that K-pop song are way less censored than they used to be. It used to be ridiculous. And I’m shocked at some of the lyrics they get away with these days. It reminds me just how much the K-pop industry changed in the last 10 years. Ironically enough I have vivid memories of Gaga’s rise and I remember the controversy surrounding Lovegame and Judas and etc. Lovegame was my favorite Lady Gaga song and I had no clue what she was talking about but I loved how it sounded. It was different from what was being played on the radio at the time.. I was like 5 when it came out singing “I wanna take a ride on your disco stick” I also remember singing Stupid Hoe, Ride, Anaconda, and most of these songs. I was heavily invested in the Nicki/Kim beef, the Ride MV was on repeat in my house because of her dancing, and Anaconda bc the controversy and her game that came out shortly after the video.

It's funny how controversial Madonna was back in the day. Her performance at the first ever MTV video awards was controversial for her wedding dress coming up and showing off more than she felt comfortable showing, at the time, and it really set precedent for her working relationship with MTV. Also, the lead single from that album wasn't her first choice ("like a virgin"), so she just took the direction the execs and label had went with for her, at the start of her MTV reign. She just went forward with in her career by pushing the envelope, so I'm not surprised she had been banned. LOVE MADONNA.

@AngeBiampandou

@@hunterwilliams8923 She is ONE of the blueprints but she certainly didn't do it ALONE. Let's give credit to Cher being the first woman showing her belly button on TV, Donna Summer moaning for 10 minutes straight onstage and singing about sex work (Bad Girls), Grace Jones in EVERYTHING she ever did. Let's not forget Janet Jackson who was Madonna's only peer who was pushing the envelope but from a black woman's lens. Janet was the orginal "Good Girl Gone Bad" with her "Janet" album era in the early 90s when she went from all the fully covered black military clothes to being topless on the cover of Rolling Stone, went from Let's Wait Awhile to Anytime, Anyplace, Throb... The BDSM and lgbt themes and imagery of The Velvet Rope album era (Free Zone, Rope Burn lap dance performance). She did it before Mariah's Honey/Butterfly era, Britney's Slave 4 U era, Xtina's Dirty/Stripped era, Rihanna's GGGB/Rated R eras, Miley's Can't Be Tamed/Bangerz eras, Chloe's Have Mercy/Treat Me era, Janelle Monae's Age Of Pleasure era....

For an eventual part 2: The ban Lady Gaga has when it comes to performing in Russia after defending LGBT+ rights. Censorship forcing her to cancel a sold out stadium show in Indonesia in 2012 for not having licenses granted with her never performing there since ( so it's probably a permanent ban ) ... She also was banned again in China years after the born this way one was lifted over meeting the dalaï lama. Her Alejandro performance on American idol was also edited which I believe is pretty rare for TV performances. Her video for Alejandro was banned from airing on most time slots on MTV too. Also this absurd Iranian streaming site melovaz that modify female artists artworks to the point they sometimes blur or erase them fully that could give you many examples for a part 2. They did it with many of Gaga's singles covers.

I remember so many K-pop censor bans here and there, it would really take awhile to remember them all. But I remember Dal Shabet’s career being especially effected by censors. As on the issue, I’m for freedom of expression, especially because I love most of the examples. But is is for certain audiences, and I respect if certain parts of the public square (like maybe an award show) need to have special considerations. That said, creating a world for everyone means catering to all ages and not dumbing anything down because we think kids will be scared. This issue def feels more complicated that music, I appreciate the examples you had!

@@naomi.cannibal If you make a part 2 could you please add the ban Lady Gaga has when it comes to performing in Russia after defending LGBT+ rights? 😁 She also had censorship forcing her to cancel a sold out stadium show in Indonesia in 2012 for not having licenses granted and she never performed there since so it may be a permanent ban... She also was banned again in China years after the born this way one was lifted over meeting the dalaï lama. Her Alejandro performance on American idol was also edited which I believe is pretty rare for TV performances. 🤔 The video for the song was banned from airing on most time slots on MTV too. There's also this absurd Iranian streaming site me lovaz that modify female artists artworks to the point they sometimes blur or erase them fully that could give you many examples for a part 2. They did it with many of Gaga's singles covers. 😆

I'm glad you made the video this long, gave you time to really get into all the specific details about each song This reminded me of when I was younger and Rihanna's S&M came out. On the radio station I listened to, the words "chains" and "whips" were censored with a classic record scratching/sudden slow down, which kept me from knowing the real meaning of the song until I was a bit older. But this year I heard it on a different station completely uncensored (and my coworker loudly singing along to it)! Apparently it was only the BBC that decided to change those lines and rename the song to "Come On" whereas other stations kept it as is. They also completely cut her vocals from the post-chorus "S S S and M M M" part, so it was just a cute little instrumental synth break lol

Regarding Madonna's 2003 controversy, she also pulled her video in response to an incident that occurred around that time involving the country music trio The Chicks (then known as the Dixie Chicks). On March 10, 2003, nine days before the invasion of Iraq, the Chicks performed at the Shepherd's Bush Empire theater in London, England. It was the first concert of their Top of the World tour in support of their sixth album "Home". Lead singer Natalie Maines told the crowd, "Just so you know, we're on the good side with y'all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas." After the statement was reported by the British newspaper The Guardian, it triggered a backlash from American country listeners, who were mostly right-wing and supported the war. The Chicks, then one of the most popular country acts at the time, were blacklisted by many country radio stations, received death threats, and were criticized by other country musicians. The backlash damaged sales of the Chicks' music and concert tickets and lost them corporate sponsorship. A few days later, Maines issued an apology, saying her remark had been disrespectful. She rescinded the apology in 2006, saying she felt Bush deserved no respect.

TLC's "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg." It was met with radio backlash because of the hook "2 inches or a yard, rock hard, or if it sag." TLC had to make a censored version with a censored music video. At one point, TLC or their record label sent one of the radio station's a note telling them if they played the censored versoon that they were just as bad as the rest of the radio stations. Now all we hear is the Explicit Version. 😂

I feel like in this modern era with streaming, radio play doesn’t mean anything anymore. If a radio refuses to play a song or at the very least a censored version why even bother when we can get it on Spotify/apple music/ KZbin. It’s honestly not even about “morality” it’s freedom of speech you should have the choice to listen to what you want. And the whole Madonna/Donna/Gaga controversy is baffling to me as Christian or other religious music gets the pass when it in itself is pushing a narrative. (Unpopular opinion)

Of I forgot to also mention this not in the video (if anyone actually cares to read my comments) but Lil Nas X in 2020 for the “Call me by your name” MV was deemed Satanic and disrespectful by Christians when it literally is depicting gays in hell which is what they always have to say about LGBT rights so I never understood why they cared it’s not like he was depicting himself as an angel flying up to heaven to lap dance God. Could you imagine that back lash?

You need to do a video on ice-t and the infamous song, which we can't say. Cop..., came at the time of Rodney King, and racial tensions then (not much has changed). He eventually removed the track and warner records destroyed the masters, music was back then recorded on film, so if it was destroyed, It's gone forever. Ironically he plays a cop on the long running Law & Order: Special victims unit. Where outside Mariska Hargitay, is the longest running cast member..
