i recall the D&D bullshiat, the parents of the one kid were looking for something to blame for his death and latched on to D&D rather than admit the kid had problems and never got the help he needed.

in 1988 I was at the gencon/origins game convention in milwaukee. there was a guy protesting outside saying we were all worshiping demons and sacrificing babies inside. I offered to buy him a pass, and show him what was actually going on. he went in, and all he could say was "that's it? that all this is?" "yup, a bunch of people sitting around tables rolling dice..." later I saw him hogging time on the battletech simulator. they had to drag him out of it...

on one hand satanic panic stuff is hilarious because you've got grown adults pointing at Pikachu and acting like they're being shown the literal devil. on the other hand, it's really depressing because you know that behind the scenes, they're enforcing major restrictions on their kids and basically teaching them to fear the entire world

That video of the guys talking about the "satanic" toys is a blast from my past. My church had us watch that video during a church camp. I had Mumm-Ra and Skeletor with me. HOLY SMOKES! sorry to hear that. My story is the complete opposite of that. I guess i was lucky. I was an only child. I did go to a private catholic school until they asked me to leave after my 3rd grade year. I was the same age as my cousin, so we kinda came up together. my aunts & my grandmother would literally take the backing cards from star wars, motu, and all of the random lines over the years that we had gotten into, and they were the original toy hunters. they’d have their checklists and it was full on beanie baby style obsessive shopping but they were into it. on xmas they’d take those flat sweater boxes from macy’s so you’d think “oh that’s clothes. i’ll save that one.” but there would be multiple action figures all packed into those boxes! they were nuts about it, & my cousin & I were the ones who came out on top! obviously.

My Dad was a minister in the Nazarene Church Denomination, so I remember all the controversy from He-Man, Smurfs, Thundercats and any other cartoon to have sorcery in them. I wasn't allowed to watch any cartoon with magic. It was so bad, my Grandparents who bought us the "cool" toys for Christmas, bought me the Snake Mountain set, and my parents almost took it away. Some Church people are really demented. And the Dungeon and Dragons controversy, like it was satanic, and caused people to murder was all over the news and another thing band by our church. Thankfully I was able to catch up with what I missed out on.

Pastor here. Most of the satanic panic stuff was emotional over reactionary nonsense. Are there folks out there influencing people’s thoughts through fiction? Sure. That has always been part of the reason to tell stories. It is great to teach kids to notice the messages communicated in any fiction, but rather than fear those messages, or hide from culture, have them evaluate them, learn where to get truth and where to escape with some fun, and even respond with their own voice through their own fiction.

I remember the Dungeons & Dragons stuff mostly due to my mother watching the news but at that early age I never knew about it being a board/RPG game as I only saw the cartoon. The moment I mentioned the name I was told I couldn't watch it which confused me (born in early '79). Funny enough the airings of Dungeons & Dragons was always plagued by being preempted by an early sports game or being jumbled from channel to channel that when it was on at a different time and a very different channel other than the big 3 I never mentioned what it was and even saw it while she was in the room by not saying the name. 😄 The only other odd head butting we had was over the Nintendo Ghosts N Goblins game. The moment I mentioned one of the bad guys was named Satan (the North American name for what was originally called The Red Arrancar) I was told immediately I couldn't play it even though I told her the point was you were to fight him and even wore armor that had a cross shield. She never budged and I remember being completely confused.

That Goddamned "Turmoil in the Toybox" book ruined MONTHS of my young life growing up in the late 80s. some Nutjob gave it to my Overly Christian Grandmother at the time, and while my Mom was the greatest ever, she would never stand up to my grandmother over ANYTHING. so for MONTHS anything and everything i wanted, i had to be lectured too about how it was a "Tiny Plastic Demon!" one day i found that book while she was in the bathroom and i grabbed that POS and hid it in my backpack. took it home with me and threw it into OUR trashcan outside. "Hidden under a massive pile of leaves for good meassure" my Aunt was just as much of a Fake, Evil Christian too. she gave me money for Easter not even 6 Months after my house burnt down. i was literally 4, going on 5 when it happend in 1987. so in early 1988 she gave me an "Easter Gift" a few candy eggs and $10. so at the time i was literally CRAZY about Beetlejuice. so my Mom took me to Toys R Us to get a Beetlejuice Toy. i got his Vanishing Vault. when my Aunt asked what i got, i showed her, she literally EXPLODED at me, saying i was and i still remember this to this day at 41 years old "A Goddamned, Evil, Satan Worshipping Little Shit" and how she would quote "NEVER give me another dime, and she believed it was GOD who burnt our house down, so all my evil toys would be destroyed in the fire" keep in mind, that house fire literally nearly killed me, my mom and dad... if it hadn't been for my dog Duchess waking my dad up by jumping up on the bed and literally bouncing on his Balls, and Hernia, we would have all died... while we was trying to get out of the house, Duchess got scared and ran under my moms desk and hid... she died in that fire.. i've never gotten another Dog to this day out of respect for her... if you want a semi happy ending though, in 2013 after my dad died from lung cancer, my aunt "during my mothers worst time of need" Cut us off as family and refused to speak to us anymore... my mom fell in 2020 on November 12th.. a couple hours before friday the 13th.. she broke her hip... and later not even a month later died from a blood clot.. which really put me in a terrible place mentally, but here is the "Happy ending" part.. i now own 50% of my Grandmothers house, my Aunt owns the other.. my aunt is refusing to sell because she let her worthless son live in the house. well, now im at the end stages of a partition court battle, she has done so many things in "Bad Faith" my Lawyer says there is a very good chance ill get FAR over 50% once its said and done. not only due to her owing me back rent, current rent, but her also breaking a sale contract we had finally settled on, but at the last minute she said "God told her not to sign" so basically on Monday the Lawyer is taking her before a Judge and HOPEFULLY she'll get the Karma back for calling a 4 year old with PTSD a Satan Worshiper for enjoying a fucking TIm Burton Movie character :) "Among many, MANY other terrible things she's done over the past 40 some odd years" TL;DR a Fake Christian who called a kid who just lost everything in a house fire a "Satan Worshiper" for buying a Beetlejuice Toy, is about to be Legally "Sacrificed" by that same now 41 year old Beetlejuice fan!

The ignorant guy in the video who kept talking and writing about all that evil stuff in the toys, games, and comic books; and kept pushing the public to believe all that crap....... I love how hypocritical people are. In the 50's, the kids parents were like "This rock and roll stuff is corrupting our children!" the kids were like WOW OUR PARENTS ARE SQUARES! IM GONNA LISTEN TO ROCK AND ROLL ALL NIGHT! ...... they grow up, have kids in the 80's, and now they're like "This MTV and Metal music is corrupting our children!" ..... like seriously? Can you not remember your youth? It just endlessly repeats.

It's so funny the 80's and 90's had the "Don't do drugs" campaign you saw all the time, but you don't see that anymore. I haven't hardly seen any "Don't do drugs" things in like two decades. And on the eco craze of the early 90's. It's interesting to see so many toys about that then that you don't see anymore now even though some people have gotten more crazy about the "eco-craze". I guess they figured kids wouldn't be interested in getting toys around an eco theme nowadays. It's so funny seeing that criticism of the original TMNT cartoon compared to the kind's of cartoons we are getting today that are way more "violent" and graphic. The cartoons out today make that original TMNT cartoon look like it's for babies.
@EdsRetroGeekOut
@EdsRetroGeekOut 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they don’t really do the this is your brain on drugs thing anymore… the eco craze I think also had to do with in order to market something with cartoons, the cartoons needed to have a moral lesson or educate in a way so being eco friendly was an easy way to piece your story around

@@EdsRetroGeekOut I was brought up secular and didn't go to church until 8th grade, and even then HATED it until i met Jesus at summer camp at age 15...so i don't know what it's like to grow up sheltered like the author may have been. I just know that He-Man is a good guy and Skeletor is evil..and it's just as good to me as C. S. Lewis's stuff. I don't see the conflict on MOST things. Now...i'm not going to say all toys are okay, but i used to run around mocking the author saying "Smurfs are evil"...naugh. I don't know the hearts of men, but I'm going to play with my toys the way i play with them, and create my own stories. In my universe Castle Grayskull IS the castle of Skeletor (like the original comics hinted at, and the original commercial stated).

I remember when I would go visit my Great grandma when I was a little kid. he-man was popular and I just got the slime pit. There was a kid next door I would always play with when I visited her. I knew they was religious but not how much till I brought that slime pit over and we were playing with it on his porch. His dad came out and seen it and lot his mind. Telling me how it was a toy of satan. Anything that was mythical with creatures was satans work according to him. Rock, blues, country, anything but gospel music was evil. That was the first time in my life I felt bad for a kid that had to live with all that religion. The only thing he was allowed to play with was toys along the line of what was actually real in the world.

it's sad when an IP is not bashed for what it is but for being popular. In order to get more media attention you bash something that never deserved it. Sure it's technically the parent's job to teach their kids values but He Man and Smurfs were not too bad in this department as well.

Considering that the book was aimed at American's and the way they do business and not Canadians I can see why the cattle industry wouldn't like it. They don't add hormones into their meat and the amount of pasture used for them wouldn't even feed a large city. Seems like the got some green peace morons to write it. They're well known to never do research into things. Pretty sure Gary Greenwald didn't have his doctorate degree or was a ordained pastor. Should be mentioned he also saw martial arts, yoga, statues and jewelry to be evil. Also, you can do whatever you want with Greek mythology, it's not copywritten. The biggest issue was the original Pitfiend or Balor (forgot which, it's been over 36 years for me) as they were called "Balrog" which is owned by the Tolken Estate. There's an interesting story from Sandy Petersons about the whole CoC thing which lead to TSR just removing it from the book in another printing, no lawsuit on that.
