This was really interesting thank you! As an aside, I find the 'political divide' promotion pretty funny since democracies main driver is criticising the government to improve policies/conditions and ensure representation for people with different views - without criticism and divide there is no democracy. It was also interesting to see how the use of 'the other' is so widely used - we have news on other countries in the UK, and while some papers have a political agenda, it's typically reported on for news, not to slander, however I can see why some Chinese people may see it that way particularly if subsequent news in China reports it as such. Regardless, any news on covid/politics etc on China, or any other country, always has the same effect as the phenomenon you spoke about, where people will criticise their government for doing the same or similar things. No contry is perfect and seeing other contires with similar issues and seeing how they solve them is always beneficial. It seems from the few posts I've seen (maybe I've missed some that don't) that China reports the generalised views of a few on the web when the West posts negative news, so I can see why the West vs East narrative works well in China although this same West vs East isn't really shared in the West even though US politicians in particular might make it seem so when sections of White House press is promoted vs regular people's thoughts. Living in multicultural societies makes it difficult and short-sighted (and not socialy acceptable) to try generalise a whole country, particularly when you know so many individuals from other places or with ethnic ties - I can see why it's a problem in predominantly one culture areas though or areas with poor critical thinking skills where news is taken at face value/ spoon-fed. I'd love to see a topic on how most people process news in China. You see a lot of people taking news at face value in the West and those who don't and are critical are less vocal about it, which I think is because engaging with idots is tiring lol and those people also seem to spend less time on social media ie less likely to comment if they are browsing. I know a little about ZeroNet before people stopped using it (?) and people not accepting West vs East propaganda but I don't know how many people follow the generalisaitons and believe it, or if it's actually less common and followed because you have to not because you want to in China.

I analyzed this topic as the final project of my sociolinguistic class back in 2019!!! (most of the examples I used back then were from when xi removed the term limit from the constitution.. Sadly, the amount of these censorship-surpassing examples has only been increasing exponentially) It's fascinating and sad at the same time that the modern evolutionary trajectory of my language is mostly driven by freakin internet censors

This is a very nice video--I can finally use something to explain to my friends why you should think twice on the news released by their government, why the voices you see online do not represent all Chinese people, and why some of them hate people from "the Western countries" so much but couldn't even tell the reason.
