honestly, i went from hating the movie on release, to loving it now. don't get me wrong, it's corny AF, but it's a great 90's time capsule and modern version of the 60's show. on top of it, joel shumacker never insulted anyone for not liking the movie, on the contrary went out of his way to apologize for, at the end of the day making art, something an artist should never be forced to do. but also, everyone involved is fully aware how crappy it is, and nobody is taking it seriously. it give the movie some meta/self aware quality to it. clooney isn't even trying, arnie is having the time of his life chewing every scene he's in with the shittiest dialog ever written, robin is contemplating the end of his career, uma thurman probably coked out of her mind, batgirl couldn't act to save her life, ... and all that with block buster budget. glorious, just ... glorious. at one point, i'm sorry but you just have to take a big step back, realise the pharaonic sized pile of shit they managed to make, and at the very least pay it some respect. they just don't make them like that anymore :P god do i miss the 90's ...

Arnie's star was NOT fading when this movie was made. For this movie he got $25 million for 25 days work, plus a percentage of the gross, which I believe made him the highest paid actor in the world at the time. In hindsight, yes, his glory days were over, but at the time we didn't know that. In the meantime ... no ... George Clooney wasn't that big at that stage - he was still on the way to the top - but it's interesting to see how people, looking back now, might not understand why Arnie was above Clooney in the billing.

At 17 years old when this came out, I was more emotionally invested in Alfred than anything else in this film because he and Pat Hingle were the only elements that made this a series of films at this point. Not even the bat suit could stay the same and I had no desire to see it change from the first one.

Mike, the "Freeze in hell" line is clearly a reference to Dante's Inferno, where Satan is encased in a lake of ice in the centre of the Abyss. There's a great Gustav Doré drawing of it.

If they were going to make a legitimate Freeze, a British actor like Patrick Stewart or Gary Oldman would have fit the bill well at the time. This particular trashfire benefitted from this bizarre casting though. Another earnest performance from a respectable actor would feel sad in Batman and Robin. I feel bad enough for Uma Thurman as it is.

I think he took one look at Carrey, thought to himself "if this is the kind of assery they want..." and decided to show 'em how an Oscar winner does it. The result is a film that is high on neon green lighting and Seal music, but very, very low on human dignity.

The soundtrack, believe it or not, is actually quite good, and has a nocturnal vibe that carries across songs and genres and definitely fits the Batman character more than the stupid fucking movie it was assembled for. I get a Mandela Effect from this movie - when Poison Ivy tries to seduce Batman I clearly remember her saying "there's something about ANatomically correct rubber suit..." and thinking how dumb it was that she'd said it wrong by missing out the word "an" before "anatomically". I even remember this being mocked online, and my friends thinking it was stupid too. But now, she says it correctly. I suppose this might have been corrected in later versions, or there's even a very, very slim possibly that I might just be misremembering it (pfft). Naturally though, I think the most likely explanation is that we've shifted timelines and we're now living in an alternate reality. It's the only sensible explanation.

As bad as you think Arnold was onscreen in this, just remember, this was the exact timeframe he was fooling around with his maid, getting her pregnant as well as his wife pregnant days apart. Filming of B&R was September '96 through January '97, and his two sons were born a week apart around end of September '97, do the math.

I contend that the marketing of Batman Returns toys to children under 13 actually gave kids, who otherwise wouldn’t be able to participate in the family trip to the theater with dad and big brother, a way to feel included and part of the Batman hype and excitement. Plus, it gets kids invested enough in the character to motivate them to later seek out the film on VHS/DVD/TV when they’re old enough to appreciate it.
