When we travelled to Hawaii for the first time. I was enamored with the very large Banyan trees. Outside of the great redwoods of California, Banyan trees were some of the biggest and unique trees I had ever seen. A Banyan tree looks like it is straight out the movie Avatar. #maui #Hawaii #pearlharbor #pearlharbour #banyan_tree
UPDATE: I am sorry to report that the historic Lahaina, Maui Banyan tree in this video has been destroyed by Maui fires. Prayers for Maui.

The banyan trees in Hawaii are just amazing. Their size of this one is just something to see. I had forgotten about them. Can't believe it is even on Google Maps. Has to be one of the only ones that shows up like that. I hope the road doesn't impede the tree trunk from expanding. Banyon Drive did not disappoint. Just gorgeous. It's amazing that they have all the names of the celebrities that planted a tree along the drive.

That was really awesome. I'm assuming one of you are in the service to have special access behind the scenes so to speak. My wife's grandfather was at Pearl Harbor during the attack. I can't remember which ship but he survived the attack. It was a really traumatizing experience for all those involved. We will visit here someday. Those trees were really neat. Even one planted by the Great Bambino! Sand Lot movie reference. Pretty neat to see them all. Awesome tour. Take care and have a great day.

The Banyan Trees are so incredible. The one at Lahaina is so spectacular. Great name for the Witness tree. The stories it could tell if it could talk... The Hilo Banyan Drive was cool. The tree on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, as you noticed, has been and continues to be heavily pruned to keep it confined to a single central trunk. This species of Ficus normally spreads out continuously and sends down roots from its branches which will turn into individual trunks. Very few locations can accommodate a tree that will never stop claiming more and more space. The US military did not take over Ford Island from its previous civilian owners till 1917-1918, so despite its size, this banyan is 100 years old at the most. During the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941 it would have only been about 20 years old and was thus a mere sapling in comparison to how big it is now.

I've never had such an intimate view of the Banyan tree. They're so beautiful!! I like how you named the one The Witness Tree. You're right, I do think there is probably bullet holes in there somewhere. I wonder if at the time they realized how huge they were going to get in such a short period of time. I imagine 90 years old isn't super old for a tree. I don't know. They're magnificent though and I imagine seeing them up close must be even more amazing. Great video, like 64, thanks for sharing!!

We watched this at home via downloading it to our IPad, so hopefully it still registers a full view. Anyway, we watched this particular one as a family and loved it so much, I think we’ve watched quite a few times now. I so want to go see these!

Why is there asphalt around this tree?
@ColoradoMartini

I was told by somebody who was stationed there that the tree grew to the asphalt. But why they didn't tear it up. You will have to ask them.
