It's time to debut a new series called Something I Found Interesting, where I talk about...well...things I found that were interesting. We're starting with an easy pick: the largest tree in the United States of America. It's located in a place many might not expect: Hawaii. Shocked? Well, that probably means your opinions about tree accomplishments are too strong, but nevertheless you should watch the video anyway.
**VIDEO GEAR**
This was actually all shot with the DJI Mavic 2 Pro: amzn.to/31BfSy2
(I wasn't flying the drone through the tree, I just used it as a gimbal since I forgot my DJI Osmo Pocket at home)

From all accounts so far, the banyan tree still stands. It has been burnt by the fire but is still standing. Prayers for all those affected by the fire and strength for the tough days ahead. Lahaina is a magical town and will rebuild even stronger.

They are getting some water to it now. From the footage the damage looks to be surface level. As someone who has worked with trees I say it has a great chance. May it be a symbol of the towns rebirth. 🙏

I’m confident this tree has survived the catastrophic fire that wiped out Lahaina, due to its great size. It appears blackened but I believe as the dead leaves are shed, most of the tree will sprout new ones. It’ll be the only sign of hope in an otherwise tragic setting.

You’re absolutely right. The tree is very much alive after Hawaiis top Arborist went to look at it. He said about 6 months it should be showing growth.

Went there 2 days ago and it is an amazing site to see. The tree roots grew down from branches and hold up new sections of branches. So yes , this one tree is indeed massive and worth a visit.

Nice video and big fan of Maui and Lahaina! However, that is not the biggest tree in the US. It's the General Sherman redwood tree in the Sequoias

Banyan trees are interesting from an evolutionary perspective, those additional sort of trunks hold up the very long, extended branches. And they are useful for providing a lot of natural shade in hot and sunny places but just so people know, they're native to inland India, not Hawaii. I find them a bit creepy and not fitting with the rest of the flora in Hawaii but the ones there are well established now.

Arborist have been examining the tree and there’s sap inside-a great sign! They’re watering and will put mulch at the bases to give it the best chance possible. Don’t give up on this magnificent old lady just yet!

Its gone now and I never even knew about it or Lahaina. What a beautiful place and an amazing tree. I pray that God will restore the town to its beautiful small business cozy area thay it looks like it was. We need places like this. Not more disgusting corporate developent. I also hope that the native Hawiians who have not been able to afford to live where THEY were born will be able to find a place to live after all of this.

I sat under the Banyan tree six months ago. While visiting Maui was interested in the history of the island and Lahaina and learned about this magnificent tree. Tragically almost every historic building, records, and artifacts from Lahaina’s past have been destroyed by the fire. The Banyan tree stands, albeit charred.

The largest tree in the world is General Sherman. This massive tree has a volume of 1,486 cubic meters, over 100 more than the previous entry. The tree is located in the Sequoia National Park’s Giant Forest Grove in California.

The Lahaina Banyan Tree is a banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis; known in Hawaiian as paniana) in Maui, Hawaii, United States. A gift from missionaries in India, the tree was planted in Lahaina on April 24, 1873, to mark the 50th anniversary of the arrival of first American Protestant mission. Covering 1.94 acres, the tree resides in Lahaina Banyan Court Park. A mere 8 feet (2.4 m) when planted, it grew to a height of about 60 feet (18 m) and rooted into 16 major trunks, apart from the main trunk, with the canopy spread over an area of about 0.66 acres (0.27 ha). It is considered the largest banyan tree in the state and the country. In April 2023, Lahaina held a birthday party to celebrate the Banyan Tree’s planting 150 years ago

Love video of the tree don't love disparaging blather about trinkets. Lahaina is actually not a typical tourist town or it was not. It was very unique with a proud history. It was the seat of the Hawaiian kingdom where the king lived. Very unique natural blessings easy to navigate and the only happy memories I ever had with my parents. Under that tree is really the only way to converse with and make friends with native locals. I don't see any reality to the statement that it can be rebuilt it was mostly wooden structures and like the Baldwin house built during the whaling era you can not replace those materials From 1800s. It was a special treat to visit and dine in an old whaler mansion made into a restaurant. I Can't see finding objects two hundred years old to recreate authentic buildings.

I was in their museum in front of the banyan tree in April 2022. I spent two hours learning about the history seeing artifacts kept there. It’s all gone. I hope the tree survives as the Hawaiian culture has in spite of many challenges faced by the island native people throughout their existence.

Biggest tree in the US is a grove of aspen, covers acres and is 2000yo. I hope the watering of the banyan tree they are doing is going to bring it back, if it’s alive.

What about the giant sequoias in California? They too are over 2000 yo. The Banyan tree definitely has a wider span, and it’s beautiful too. Just not sure if it’s the largest in the US. I do hope it survives.

No matter which way you measure it that is not the largest tree in the United States by any way shape or form. General Sherman's going to beat it pando going to absolutely destroy it. It's possibly the largest banyan tree in the US but it's not the largest tree in the US the largest tree in the US is the largest tree in the world. United States is home to the tallest tree in the world the largest tree in the world by volume and the oldest tree in the world.

This Banyan Tree the largest leafy tree. The Sequoia are technically nettles, but the General Sherman Sequoia is far and away the largest tree in the world, not to mention part the largest tree "network" in the world as well. The Banyan has the largest root structure, by volume of any tree, but it's impossible to know exactly how large this particular tree's root system is as it's growing on top of a lava bed that almost certainly limits it's ability to grow downward.
