Using a amplifier with a cheap UV-5R is like someone that uses to make a lot of noise at your street and neighberhood shouting stupid things and annoying everyone, deciding to buy a PA (Public Adress) sound system: You can imagine the havoc........😪😪😪 Using a amplifier like this on a cheap, RF noisy radio is so dangerous for the other radio spectrum users that you cannot even imagine. Even if you use a decent portable radio, you MUST allways check harmonics levels going into the air (with a good quallity spectrum analyser). Even much worst at a Base Station than at a mobile station. Beware........🤬😠 (you can minimize this by using a narrow band passband filter for the ham bands (yes, the ham bands !!! If you are not a licenced radioamateur you have no business transmiting. Remember: you can listen but you CANNOT transmit, so why would you need a amplifier ???!!!!!!!)

So, I have a set of Baofeng UV-S9's...an upgrade to the UV-5R that has 8W transmission...same programming. Could you recommend an amplifier kit that would work w/one of these? Could I set mine for low/med power and make it work? Also, what is the process for registering a repeater? Is that a separate process from technician/general licensure? I'm assuming I'd need a specific frequency granted for this purpose? Thanks.

I own the BTECH AMP-U25 Amplifier for UHF (400-480MHz), 20-40W Output (2-6W Input), the U is for UHF this model allows you to talk pass thru the amp without power. The other units that have digital won't talk thru the amp when off. Stick to analog. Repeaters don't dig digital waves anyways bro. I talked to Randy on this unit with the UV-5X recently with no problem. 986 Long Beach.

I was recruited to join a professional offroad racing team in a support role, for the SCORE Baja 1000 in Mexico. The team had four satellite phones and numerous VHF portable radios. I pre-ran a 50 mile section of the pro course, and took one of the VHF portables, because I knew nothing about radios. I had an incident about 50 miles south of San Felipe, and could have died out there because the VHF portable was useless. If I'd had the booster and antenna you mentioned, connected to a UV-5R or something similar, I probably would have been able to call for help.

Thanks for the informative videos! I'm thinking of trying one of these in tandem with an Argent simplex repeater unit and a Baofeng UV-5G to make a cheap portable repeater box to drop at the top of the hill or carry in the truck. Am I crazy and overly hopeful, or does that sound reasonable for light-duty use?
@togeika2 жыл бұрын
I have thought of the same. I have a simplex box (a LATNEX RC-S120 Simplex Repeater) and have tested it with a HT. Have been doing radio and antenna checks using it and not needing someone at the other end using the repeater. But in an emergency, I can put the HT, repeater, a battery together and a Slim Jim antenna up about 40ft up in the backyard Oak tree and expand the 2 mile radius I get now by 5 or 10 times. Especially if I bought an amp to go with it.

I can't get a good match between my UV-5RTP and the BTech Amp-U25D. I'm at 2.98:1 but all TX is brief. I'll try a shorter RG316 cable. The amp output to the Midland MXTA26 is a mere 23.2W and a 1.22:1 match. I have experienced clear communication through an RT97 Repeater from 60 miles out.

After watching, I found that there are two amplifiers that work for the UV-5R in its UHF/VHF frequencies. The BTECH AMP-U25 provides 20-40W Power Boost for UHF (400-480MHz) and the BTECH AMP-V25 provides 20-40W Power Boost for VHF (136-174MHz). The BTECH AMP-220 is for 30-50W Power Boost for 1.25M Band, which is from 222 to 225 MHz. I don't believe, though I may have misread my manual, that the UV-5R operates in that range.
