Can't complain about the UV5R. People are usually glued to their screens 24/7, so being able to get news when those screens don't work anymore is always a good thing.

Listening and gathering info is 80%+ of why having a radio is important.

Glad everything passed w/o issues. I saw the weather for your area all the way up here from Alaska. I don't miss tornados and the yearly hurricanes and Nor-Easterns from my time on the east coast.. We had a hurricane come through one year and knocked out the power for 2-3weeks. It was a good experience especially being dirt poor because I was used to going w/o and I was ready. A lot of folks around me were not. I too had comms and WOW was it golden! but I talk about my comms about as much as I like to talk about the best way for me not to leave sign going through snowy terrain .. Good to see you in some Flecky.. Good morning from Alaska my friend.

Weather can definitely be...shitty here sometimes. I probably will not delve to much more into personal comms but may touch on it for natural disaster purposes and such. Oh that's still the same miltec smock iv had for a few years now, it's my favorite piece once the heat starts to ease up down here. I believe you talked about the miltec smock in a older video? But it's starting to show some wear and tear but I still love it. Hope things are good up there, have a good weekend friend!

That's why I like the Quansheng with custom firmware. For listening it is much better. 18 MHz to ~ 1.2 GHz, FM, AM, SSB, more channels. It's a great little radio and scanner for the price. The mods are getting wilder every day. But I recommend finding a good firmware, install it, and you're good. I use the IJV firmware for now. Get one or two of these Quanshengs, it's worth it.👍

I listened for qiuite a while before getting my Ham licence, almost 20 years ago now. Get your General class Ham licence, so you can talk on HF over a longer distance. I just built up one of my HF rigs as a Manpack Portable system.

Listening more and more has encouraged me to try for my ham licenses

@@swampdweller1566 carried my manpack radio out the other day and made contacts in six different states, with just a small portable battery and a solar panel. That's something those little handheld radios can't do.

Those radios can be programed with the NOAA weather frequencies, in the 162 mhz range.

Posted this comment before seeing you demonstrate the NOAA channels.

I mainly use my UV5R to listen. Same reason I have a Tecsun PL-380. Neither are expensive and both are useful tools in gathering news/information.

Good cheap and useful preparedness item. I have a few for the same reasons.
