Baoh the Bioweapon Sound Design

Just a heads up: this is from the 1989 OVA of Baoh (not by DavidPro). Baoh the manga was created in 1984 by Hirohiko Araki. His real name is Ikuro Hashizawa and Baoh is a bioweapon parasite that gives him super powers. Also, it's super violent.
I just kinda randomly got this idea and wanted to showcase Baoh himself from the OVA because he's pretty cool. I figure JoJo fans would get a kick out of it and maybe this will be peoples first time seeing Baoh. If you're interested in Baoh definitely check out the manga and the full OVA. He was also in All Star Battle as a DLC fighter.

Most of the really Gorey stuff, including this, were OVAs. It was a huge market, but Japanese TV standards weren’t looser in that time, as far as I know. Either way, you are right that it was a much different era, and it might be interesting to know what it was like being and Otaku at the time. Instead of “have you watched this, or caught the most recent episode of that?” it’s “have you watched that thing, oh dude I have a copy you can borrow, we can watch it together!”

The absolute best cracking and monster-humanoid sounds I've heard from an OVA yet! The part where the knife slides out of his chest with a crunching grind really had me wincing it was so well-done. I also really, really love the sound that Baoh makes when he transforms. It's like some disembodied, roaring voice is announcing his entrance from beyond like "BAOOOOAHOOAH!!". The effects they used for his blade summoning is also super satisfying to hear too lol. Think I might use these sounds as inspiration for my own monsters.

Nothing on earth will ever beat this era of animation, nothing. It's always fascinating loading up old school anime and just being floored at how amazing the animation was back then. Every frame in the action scene had so much attention to detail, perfect composition, form and fluid movement. I remember in the late 90s when we were finally able to load these anime OVAs on computer. Just freeze framing to a random point in the action scene was such perfect composition, it made for amazing desktop backgrounds. There are scenes in these anime of that era that I still wonder today how the hell did they manage to direct and animate them. Especially knowing that each frame was drawn and hand painted on cells. But that animation is so amazing, watching some of these didn't feel like you were watching a 2D animation. It was like you were peering into a different universe where everything just looks like that.

Just wanted to say thank you for uploading this video. Oddly enough I’ve never heard of the character Baoh before which is crazy considering that I’m a huge fan of the Guyver manga, anime, and the two live action movies. I also really like this style of character. I plan on watching the entire film since it’s on KZbin. Unfortunately from the little research of done on the Baoh character, it doesn’t look like he has any other OVA’s other than the 50 minute long anime you pulled this footage from. I could be wrong and honestly I hope so because Baoh is just too cool of a character to only have one movie. Anyways, thanks again for the upload and I look forward to seeing more of your content. Well there is always manga, the OVA is a cut down version of the manga’s story. Though with only 9 chapters there isn’t that much extra Baoh content
