@@korvaamiko66 Freedom of speech isn't the concern here. Of course the Church supports not only the Constitution of the United States but also the principle of agency, which is very much related to liberty. However, having the legal right to express oneself doesn't mean that we can do so everywhere. This is a moderated comments section, so some comments that are particularly offensive will not be approved. People who want to make those kinds of comments are still free to do so, but they will have to find some other forum. It's similar to us having our own private property and dictating who is welcome there.

If your parents were born and died in a nation, where preaching the gospel of Christ is forbidden , would you feel that it's fair for your parents to spend eternity in Hell, because they never had the opportunity to hear and either accept or reject the gospell of Christ? What a wonderful comment, and what strange misunderstanding in some of the replies. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints accept Jesus Christ as our savior--the only way to salvation. Christ himself taught of the necessity of baptism during His mortal ministry as described in the Bible. Through baptism we accept Christ as our savior and covenant with God to follow Christ as His disciples. We perform baptisms by proxy for the dead so that they have the opportunity to do the same.

It's going to be more than a thousand years before they face final judgement after our death. So for those who have passed away and never had the chance to hear the truth, will have the chance to hear the truth. All men and women will have the chance to hear the truth and free agency is given upon them to choose to either accept the Savior or to reject the Savior. Therefore, at the final judgement, one will stand before God and accept the judgement as is passed on to the one, because He or She had heard the truth and will decided for themselves.

This is what Jesus Christ Said in John 5 25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; 27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. 28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. 30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. 31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. 32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

Sure, Paul only mentions the Corinthian practice in passing whilst arguing for the reality of the resurrection, but in a letter chock-full of condemnations of their practices, you could argue it comes off as an affirmation.

Viewing the words 'they' and 'we' are critical in this context. In all of Paul's letters, he used 'we' for Christ following Christians and 'they' for other churches and unbelievers. @@binren3984 You are wrong. Baptisms for the dead are necessary. It isn't that one scripture, it is how Christ preached to the dead, which is mentioned in numerous Bible passages. And if you read the whole chapter it does talk about the resurrection. If the resurrection wouldn't happen then baptisms for the dead would not be necessary, but we do rise, and so they are necessary. This is why the gospel was preached to those that are dead.

@@binren3984 You're adding extra "context" that isn't there. In many cases Paul corrected members of the Church through his epistles, and yet he issued no correction at all relating to baptisms for the dead, but rather used the Christian practice of proxy baptism to explain resurrection. I responded to you underneath someone else's comment, but I'll add more here. Our faith and actions in this life are definitely important, but there absolutely are things that must be done for the dead who were unable to do everything here. Many, many people have lived on this Earth without ever hearing about Jesus Christ, and thus had no opportunity to exercise faith in Him. He visited the Spirit World between His death and resurrection to ensure that those in Spirit Prison could be taught. Refer to 1 Peter 3:18-19 and 4:6 for specific references about that.

I knew there was a higher power and I dug Jesus as a great person and his teachings are all amazing. I could not find many answers and I saw so much bitterness towards others of different faiths from many pastors who seem to want to insight fear from their followers with barbaric consequences if they do not get the religion. I thought," man Jesus is not like that at all?" I'm also a scientists and needed science to make since with whatever my journey ended up teaching me. Then I fell in love with the LDS church, as my understandings of the universe and my part in it just made sense. So last thing guess what? the concept of Hell is not what they are trying to keep you tied down with. NO man woman or child will go to hell if they do not understand the gospel in this life, that's what the next life is all about , being able to learn more and this "learning" never ends. !!! The phrase “on behalf of the dead” is not actually in the Greek. The Greek word can mean “for” or “for the sake of,” not “on behalf of.” this is reflected in more modern English translations (NKJV, NABRE, NIV, etc.) The best explanation I've seen for 1 Corinthians 15:29 goes as follows: Those who were baptized for the dead were baptized “for” them in the sense of taking their place on the church membership roll. In other words, when believers died (many through martyrdom), new believers came forward to occupy the places left vacant by their absence. Paul’s logic is, why would these new believers put their own lives at risk (knowing that baptism would mark them for martyrdom) if there is no life after death? Those baptized for the dead were brought to faith in Christ by the testimonies of those now dead. The hope of resurrection espoused by the recently deceased believers continued in the faith of the newly baptized. I hope this brings a sense of clarity to those that find the LDS interpretation lacking, misinformed or superficial. God Bless.

The Catholic Church, the Orthodox churches and even most Protestant denominations do not consider Mormonism as a Christian Religion. For their concept differs from Christianity. 1) Different Godhead, 2) Exaltation concept, 3) Baptism of the dead, 4) Spirit World, 5) Concept of Baptism, 6) The concept of Hell, etc. Those are reasons the LDS is not recognized as Christian, also the Jesus-Christ they're speaking about is a creature and not the incarnation of Almighty God which is the Christian Creed.

You are right that our own faith is necessary. If someone does not accept Christ, then a proxy baptism for them does not help. However, if they do accept Christ, then a proxy baptism affords them an opportunity they may not have had in life. Pertinent Biblical references are John 3:5 - "Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." and 1 Corinthians 15:29 - "29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?" As described in this video, members of the Church are able to complete temple ordinances like baptism for the dead for deceased persons to whom they are related, which are then recorded on FamilySearch. According to Church doctrine, a departed soul in the afterlife is completely free to accept or reject such a baptism - the offering is freely given and must be freely received. The ordinance does not force deceased persons to become members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, nor does the Church list deceased persons as members of the Church. Hmmm ... but their own Mormon Bible contradicts this teaching ... saying, “For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he does seal you his. Therefore, the spirit of the Lord has withdrawn from you and hath no place in you; the power of the devil is over you, and this is the final state of the wicked.” … "And this I know, because the Lord hath said he dwelleth not in unholy temples, but in the hearts of the righteous doth he dwell; yea, and he has also said that the righteous shall sit down in his kingdom, to go no more out; but their garments should be made white through the blood of the Lamb." - Alma 34:35-36 It is noteworthy that the scriptures that directly mention death in connection with baptized ones refer to living individuals who had been baptized and not to those who had died. Paul also told fellow anointed Christians: “You were buried with him in his baptism, and by relationship with him you were also raised up together through your faith in the operation of God, who raised him up from the dead.”-Colossians 2:12. It is obvious that they (Mormons) have misinterpreted what Paul is stating at 1Cor 15:29 ... after all, baptism is related to Christian discipleship, and dead souls cannot be disciples. (John 4:1) It's also worth mentioning that Paul corrected many false teachings trying to infiltrate the Christian congregation (which eventually happened). Thus the reason why such teachings exist today creating all sorts of religions! So even in Paul's day, some were even teaching the resurrection had already occurred 2 Tim 2:17,18. Here at Chapter 15 of 1st Cor. Paul is now correcting the false teaching that some were teaching there is no resurrection. At 1st Cor 15: 20-23 Paul knew he would be dead for a period of time “. . .But each one in his own proper order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who belong to the Christ during his presence. . .” - 1Co 15:23. Nobody is resurrected till Jesus begins ruling! Paul corrected 2 false teachings concerning the resurrection of his day ... Hmmm ... Does anybody ever wonder what this means? “. . .and you made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God, and they are to rule as kings over the earth.”” - Re 5:10

Wapper Jaw, note that as Paul uses the Corinthian practice of baptism for the dead in his argument for the reality of the resurrection, he doesn’t condemn the practice. In a letter full of condemnations, that’s arguably an affirmation. How does a passage about not procrastinating repentance “disprove” the practice of baptism for the dead? Baptism for the dead is preformed for those who never had the chance to be baptized in their lifetime at all. That passage just doesn’t apply.

The passage from Alma is in the Book of Mormon, not a "Mormon Bible", and it's not a contradiction at all. You're missing a number of other things, such as the resurrection of many immediately following the resurrection of Jesus Christ in Matthew 27:52. Paul was quite direct in referring to baptisms for the dead, and also in describing Jesus' mission to preach to the dead in the Spirit World between His death and resurrection. This is what Jesus Christ said 14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to *fulfil all righteousness*. Then he suffered him. Matthew 3 19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. 29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead? 1 Cor 15 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Phil 2 28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. John 5 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. KJ, I think you deny the Savior's love and his work, to save as many people as will believe in him; even those millions who died, never knowing Christ. If your comment were true, there are MILLIONS living on earth who will never know Jesus Christ or God the Father. Will they be condemned? "This is my work and my glory, to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of Man." "...For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved." ALL must be baptized; those who died without baptism will be baptized, if in proxy, and they will be given the choice to accept or reject it. There are churches "out there" that teach, if a person has not been baptized before they die, they will be tortured for eternity; even children and babies. This is a sick and evil belief.

Right now, the gospel is preached among those who are still living to all who will listen, and when a person joins the Church, they can then research their own ancestors. We can presume that not all family lines will be immediately available just through Church members, though. Also, there are plenty of people for whom earthly records have not been kept. I don't remember the references very well, but as I understand it, records are kept in heaven also, and during the reign of Christ on Earth, we will know more and be able to continue the work. The thief on the cross was told that he would be with christ in "paradise." But what is "paradise" and where is it? Christ and this thief die and they go to "paradise" right? But when Christ is resurrected on the third day what does He say to Mary? "Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God." So He went to "paradise" but never went to His Father or heaven? That is exactly right. Paradise is not heaven. Paradise is a place where the dead who have accepted Christ, wait for the resurrection and the judgement. This thief believed in Christ, only on His word, and now would have the opportunity in death, in paradise, to learn of Christ and His gospel and accept Him or not. 1 Peter chapters 3 and 4 speak of Christ preaching the gospel to the dead. It is obvious that this is where Christ went during the time in which He was dead, before His resurrection. As for Cornelius, the Spirit can come to anyone who diligently seeks Christ... you don't have to belong to any religion for that to happen... but the Spirit will always direct you to Christ's church just as it did Cornelius and his followers.

"He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy." (Proverbs 29:1) We have our chance in life. Whoever doesn't choose to accept or to seek truth (Matthew 7:7, "seek and you will find") will suddenly be destroyed, . "Suddenly being destroyed" refers to death, and whoever dies in their sins goes to hell. Baptism of the dead is believed to be a remedy to that death, the remedy that God said would never exist. So unless God is lying, baptism of the dead is useless.

@@dcpaulk27 It's God's teaching--not my theory--but I'll gladly respond. In the parable in Luke 16:19, Christ isn't addressing baptism but is instead teaching other principles, and we don't have any context about the baptismal status of the people involved. One man in the parable had opportunities to listen to God's prophets and follow God's will but rejected it all. He didn't like the result, but being dead didn't do anything to increase his faith in Jesus Christ. Proxy baptism would not help him. It also won't help some other people, but when we perform proxy baptisms for our ancestors we have no way of knowing what is in their hearts. We perform the ordinance without knowing, and it is up to them to have true faith in Jesus Christ. Some will not, but some will, and they will be grateful that they were able to receive baptism by proxy even though they had no opportunity while alive.

Baptism of the dead does not take place on sound scriptural basis. It is nonsense. It is a pagan ritual that was common in Greek religions. Paul, in 1 Corinthians 15, talks about the inconsistencies of practices of false teachers in the historical context of the church in Corinth. The point of his writing is to emphasize the resurrection from the dead, and he does nowhere say that it is good to baptize the dead (via a proxy or other method). Baptism for the dead cannot - by scriptural evidence - lead to salvation in any way. The only way to salvation is faith in Jesus Christ. No works, deeds or rituals can help in the salvation of a human being, as it is only the belief in and acceptance of Jesus Christ and what He has done for you. There is so much evidence against the baptism of the dead, that even this misinterpretation of 1 Corinthians 15:29 cannot be apparent. Go and read up on it yourself. Seriously. Read what comes before it and read what comes after. Get an understanding of what is going on, what is the author trying to say, and then figure out if the explanation you were given makes sense.
@00Fisher00
@00Fisher00 5 жыл бұрын
Many of us have studied the passages extensively, and proxy baptism is very much based on a sound scriptural basis, both in the Bible and in other scripture. Paul is indeed teaching about resurrection, but citing incorrect practices doesn't strengthen any teaching, so he would have no reason to do that. Jesus Christ is indeed the way to salvation, and He himself taught that baptism was necessary and also served as an example to us by being baptized Himself. Baptism is as important for those who have died as for those who have not died yet. Christ also taught that what we do is vital for our salvation when he said, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." (Matthew 7:21)

Do you accept the Bible as scripture? If so, you should consider several passages from it that refer to these things. For example, 1 Corinthians 15:29, which reads, "Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?" We see the importance of being authorized by God to do His work in passages like Hebrews 5:4, which reads, "And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron." Verses 1-3 in that chapter refer to high priests and explain some of their work, and verse 4 makes it clear that God didn't say for people to take His work upon themselves without being authorized and called. Whether or not you believe in the Bible, I'd be interested in hearing what the foundation of your faith is.

The problem with Baptism of the proxies is: • The sin is committed with our fleshy condition, and so the actual flesh of the dead person must be present in order to cleanse it. Not any proxies. And the proxies has no knowledge of sins that was being committed by that dead person. Baptism by immersion in water symbolize the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, or we too resurrect with Jesus Christ. Resurrection of Jesus Christ is a reunification of perfected flesh, bones, and the spirit. And this can't be achieved when you are dead. •And keep in mind what this verse teach us (John 16:8). "When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment" Unless an awareness of sin is instilled in him by the Holy Spirit, a sinner will not be able to see the wickedness of his sins and flee from the future wrath unto obedience of Christ.

The Bible teaches redemption for the dead. Christ Himself was a proxy for us, if we accept His Atonement. Yet he declares the dead heard His voice and His Apostles proclaimed it. So redemption is made by the Savior of the world, dead and living!

When you say, "the actual flesh of the dead person must be present in order to cleanse it," that's nothing more than an assertion from you, and it is not founded in God's word. You are correct about the symbolic meaning of baptism by immersion; the dead can accomplish the spiritual aspect of this covenant but they rely on us to accomplish the physical aspect, for which we do not need any knowledge of their sins. Our physical resurrection will come later, and that is partly why baptism for the dead is so important. Paul taught this in 1 Corinthians 15:29 -- "Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?"

1 Peter chapter 3 and 4 speak of redemption for the dead. Baptism is an essential ordinance in order to enter the kingdom of heaven and Christ Himself taught the gospel to the dead so they have that opportunity. It is Biblical, it is Christ's gospel, it is the truth. I understand it is strange because the churches have not taught it since the church fell and the full truth is lost, but if you read the Bible and know Christ as a loving Savior, you would see that this is a way He has designed to save a lot more of His children that will accept Him.

BRETHREN, THE GRACE PERIOD IS STILL OPEN, LETS REPENT AND TURN BACK TO GOD. WHEN YOU DIE, YOU NOLONGER HAVE CHANCE. TOMORROW MAY NEVER COME. THE TIME IS NOW. PRAYING FOR THE DEAD OR BAPTISM FOR THE DEAD WILL NOT CHANGE THEIR FATE. WHEN YOU DIE, YOUR BOOK OF EARTHLY LIFE IS CLOSED AND SHALL BE OPENED AT THE JUDGEMENT DAY. 1 Peter 3 and 4 say otherwise. The dead are taught the gospel even as we speak. The judgement is not yet, but will come soon, so yes, repent, because you can't say that when you are dead you will all of a sudden have a different personality and be ready to accept Christ, even though you will be taught the gospel there as well. But don't delay until the judgement, prepare before.

Your thought is incomplete. In Luke 20:38, Jesus said, "For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him." God is the God of all, and those who have died are not lost to Him because their spirits continue and because of Jesus Christ, all will be resurrected. Again, we read in Romans 14:8-9, "For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living." That's why Jesus ensured that the dead were taught (see 1 Peter chapters 3 and 4) and why we do proxy work in temples for the dead.

Hi @John smith, we're sad to hear about your experience. Mormons or LDS Church members, properly referred to as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are Christian. One of our most basic beliefs and teachings is that every single individual on earth is a beloved son or daughter of God, worthy of love and respect. We strive to follow Jesus Christ's instruction to love one another as He loves us. We believe Jesus Christ is our Savior, we revere the Bible as the word of God, and we believe the Book of Mormon to be another testament of Jesus Christ. You or others interested can learn more about our beliefs here: www.comeuntochrist.org/beliefs

So my understanding on baptism is that its a way of showing your love for Jesus because you want to have a declaration of letting go of the old stuff, starting a new chapter in your life with God and its for believing the Gospel and have repented. I don't think its cool that they have use a stand in for a dead person who has never been baptized before have them be starting at age 12. If the dead person when they were alive never wanted a baptism or never had one then don't give them one after they have died. It was there choice not yours before they were dead. There should be only baptism and that should be be for believing in the Gospel, have repented, and sharing your love for Jesus. And you should be able to get baptized in anything you want in any body of water.

Hi there, thanks for your question. Jesus Christ taught that “except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). For those who have passed on without the ordinance of baptism, proxy baptism for the deceased is a free will offering performed by Latter-day Saints in temples around the world. According to Church doctrine, a departed soul in the afterlife is completely free to accept or reject such a baptism - the offering is freely given and must be freely received. See the link below for more information explaining the practice of baptisms for the dead: www.churchofjesuschrist.org/topics/baptisms-for-the-dead?lang=eng#_We hope that helps answer your question!

@@churchofjesuschrist Okay, but the person is already dead and it was their choice to get baptized or not have one. So basically you are making the choice for them already even tho they made the choice in their life before they died. Why go against someone else's choice tho. "For the wages of sin is death but the free gift of eternal life is in Jesus Christ Our Lord." Meaning I did not have to get baptized in order to get into Heaven because Jesus shed his blood for me so I don't have to sin anymore because Jesus's blood on the cross did that for me and that also means by him dying on the cross for my sins also gets me a free ticket in heaven without doing anything to earn it. Its called the Gospel go look it up actually learn something.

@@_LSW The choice is always up to them whether they accept the proxy baptism or not. If we did not perform proxy baptisms, that is when they actually would not have the choice. Many, many people have lived without even knowing about Jesus Christ; many people genuinely didn't have any opportunity to be baptized in the proper manner by someone with God's authority. In other cases, they may have had some opportunity, but we don't try to judge them. Instead, we render a service for them by proxy in case they do want to accept it. I hope that helps.

@monocuco818
@monocuco818 Жыл бұрын
It isn't exactly like that. You see when Christ was crucified, He told one of the thieves that they would go to "paradise." But that doesn't mean they went to "heaven." So Christ and this thief die, and they go to "paradise." BUT when Christ resurrects on the third day what does He say to Mary? "touch me not, for I am not yet ascended to the Father." So He went to paradise, which is a place for the spirits that were good and those who believed in christ. "Hell" or "prison" is this same spirit world, but contains the spirits of people who did evil in this world or who rejected Christ. 1 Peter chapters 3 and 4 teach us that when Christ went here, He preached the gospel to those who were dead, and in prison. In other words, the gospel was preached and is being taught to those who are dead, just like those who are alive. Which means that many people still have not heard the gospel and many have still rejected it. Christ is doing His work here as well as in the spirit world to bring ALL of His children to Him. In the Book of Mormon it talks about this, saying we can't assume that we can be sinful and not accept the gospel in this life and in the next we will just be completely different and ready to accept it. It will still be challenging, if not more challenging to accept the gospel. This is what the Book of Mormon says: Alma 34: 32-34 For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors. And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, whic is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed. Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world." In other words, we are the same in this life, whether dead or alive. We need to believe in Christ now. But that doesn't mean we won't have the opportunity after this life to accept it.

In good standing lol the Bible says No one is good. Mark 10:17-22 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. ‘Good teacher,’ he asked, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ ‘Why do you call me good?’ Jesus answered. ‘No one is good - except God alone.

Nowhere in the bible does it say we have to baptize the dead, Luke 20:38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for him who are all alive. John 5:21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them, even so, the Son quickeneth who he will. This is Jesus' job and no other.

Members of the restored Church of Jesus Christ don't rely exclusively on the Bible, but in it we do find 1 Corinthians 15:29. Luke 20:38 in the KJV reads, "For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him." That means that work we do for the physically dead or alive is equivalently important. Christ Himself went to Spirit World while dead to ensure that the dead in Spirit Prison were taught. The work we do for the dead comes before their resurrection.
