The new Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries DLC "The Dragon's Gambit" has arrived. Let's take a look at all the gameplay aspects, story, new Mechs and weapon systems together. In this playthrough we will start a new career as a Mechwarrior thrown int o a conflict against our will.

In the aftermath of the Fourth Succession War, the Davion/Steiner Alliance dealt a devastating blow to the Capellan Confederation, leaving First Prince Hanse Davion eager to replicate this success against the Draconis Combine.
Gunji-no-Kanrei Theodore Kurita, fully aware of the encroaching menace posed by the FedCom Alliance, has taken decisive action to fortify the Combine's defenses against an inevitable war. As tensions rise, a unique opportunity presents itself - to unite with the Draconis Combine and rally behind Kurita's audacious and unexpected plan.
Embark on an epic quest line as your mercenary company joins forces with the 5th Amphigean Light Assault Group. Together, you must defend the Draconis Combine against a massive invasion by the FedCom Alliance. Brace yourself for the largest handcrafted campaign yet, spanning 15 thrilling missions, and prove your mettle in the face of this formidable threat as you strive to safeguard the future of the Draconis Combine.
The gameplay of Mechwarrior 5 is split in two different parts. On the one hand you will have to manage your resources, hire new crew members, outfit your Mechs and travel through the Inner Sphere star map. But the action starts as soon as you get into the cockpit of your Battlemech yourself to fulfill contracts on the battlefield to earn more C-Bills and progress the story. I will review the weapon systems, battlemechs, show you how to build the loadouts and train your pilots and take a look at all the different mission types and upgrades of the MW5 Heroes of the Inner Sphere DLC.

Bara, the SRM (P) ammo is not + damage. It is 1200 missiles. One bin of pirate ammo is more than your three bins. Correction: Almost as much as your three bins.

Yes, but the Pirates removed all safety measures to cram as many missiles into a bin as possible. They crit much easier and only Case II can stop it. Granted, all you have to do is not get into structure and you'll be fine :)

That is why I keep a Locust or Firestarter around, just to zoom along and wreck artillery.

How do you like to build your Firestarter? I'm unsure whether to focus on flamers to go with the quirks, or to go more into small lasers with a pair of mediums for more range when shooting air power.

@@Thalanox I go with SLs and maybe machine guns depending on the variant and throw all the saved weight into armor and engine. I love FS9s but they're a little too squishy which I think is because they're stupidly big for a light mech, idk if that even affects their survivability given how enemy ai hit calculation works but anything you put on the arms is a goner. Oh if I have room I'll slap something like 2 MLs to deal with flyers.

​ @Thalanox Both flamers and machine guns have absurd damage for their weight, and they're actually hit-scan in MW5. That's before quirks and secondary effects are considered (heat transference and internal crits respectively). The question is if you have enough reasonably tiered flamers to boat, if you're willing to risk them on a light mech, and if you can tolerate near-melee range. Focus components and you can melt mediums before the aggro settles in if you're brave enough.

Updated tally of stuff to be done: * Investigate Medium Claws - Work well but where do they fit? * Find Medium Scrap Rifle Ammo - IN PROGRESS * Convert more low tier weapons - IN PROGRESS * Rebuild Locust LAM - LIGHT RIFLES AND OTHER THINGS TO MAKE IT LESS SQUISHY * Build a Nova * Build Crusader - IN PROGESS * Add AMS to all heavy mechs - IN PROGRESS * Collect parts for Stormcrow * Build an SRM 6 (c) mech build - SEE CRUSADER Wow that artillery did a number on you. Also, in the battle of the Locusts it seems that the LAM, even though it's heavier and faster, looses out to the Pirate's Bane.

Scrap gun = small Scrap rifle = medium Scrap cannon = large The Scrapper = huge FLE-14 challenge run?

A pile of scrap is a pile of scrap, any pile of scrap should be ammo for any scrap rifle. The larger the pile the greater the ammo count. (IMO)

@@benfubbs2432 You're not wrong and it makes sense, but the ammo usage is the block. Best I could work out was different ammo sizes for each weapon. Otherwise the gun would have way too much ammo and the cannon barely any. The Scrapper is another matter since it fires all its ammo in one shot and can only fire once.

@@perpetrator8932 I'd suggest you rip-off the LRM ammo system. Every LRM launcher uses the same ammo but each fires a different quantity. The real problem is that the ammo and the rifle seem to appear quite rarely, so I have a feeling Bara is never going to get a chance to fire those as the probability of getting both ammo and the rifle is too low. I'd imagine scrap is something that is extremely common, so the ammo should appear in every industrial hub and then this problem goes away. Just throwing it out there I don't know if any of that is possible or worthwhile.

Every time I see Bara pilot the Locust LAM I think of the story of Icarus. 🤣 Bummer about the scrap ammo, I really want to see what those weapons are and how they perform on the battlefield, but I'm sure it will happen eventually.

Hey man not sure if you know but if you update coyote mission pack you can get aerospace fighters, you can steal them in some resource missions, they are quite difficult though. The fighters are great though!

I just watched this whole series and subscribed, amazing stuff man. One thing, I played a career with just some mods, no Biomes or YAML, It was great, then I added a bunch off stuff like VonBiomes and YAML and done a new playthrough, they add so much content and expand the game so much but so many issues, pathing, stuck mechs, tanks, poor Ai etc, I was using TTRulz Ai and it was amazing in my first mostly vanilla playthrough, shocking how good it was but then YAML adds its own Ai type for specific roles e.g brawler, sniper etc and i don't think I have had a single mission where I was not frustrated with my teammates.

Crazy you can only field 4 'Mechs when you have like 12 available 'Mechs (+ more in salvage) on your dropship! Hoping we'll be able to play company level campaigns at some point.

Crusader gonna need at least 1 med long range laser for anti air so it doesnt dpam missiles at bad targets for lrms.

Bara I know you have this philosophy of not upgrading mechs you're not going to use long term, but given the pacing of this playthrough you should check out at least a couple of the upgrades you've unlocked for mechs. The armor and speed tweak upgrades are like sub-100k cbills and will save you an incredible amount of money in terms of lost equipment and evasion - they're worth putting on every mech you use. You'll make back the money in 1 mission in terms of savings in repairs. Make sure to check the costs of the upgrades if you're doing something other than that though some are insanely expensive. SRM 6/2s are very solid. Scorpions are not particularly good but they are stupidly fun and extremely jank. It's just a cicada with a missile hardpoint and an extremely low to the ground cockpit, and also wack ass animations

Baradul, If you want more Damage for the missiles you'd need to use Pirate HE ammo. It's the reason my Crusader-3R has 140alpha with 2 Lrm10,2 Srm 8, 2 Srm 6 all clan of course

If the locust is too small, mabee try Moduar Armor. But please read carfully there are 2 kinds of MA one who adds armor points and one who allows to add more armor to the location.

Not sure if it will fit but the LAM with to medium rifles would be interesting, doing strafing bombing runs at high speed. The cooldown on the guns wouldn't matter because you'll need that time to turn around for another pass anyway. They probably weigh too much to fit though?

Land Air Mechs are so not worth it. You just do not have enough tonnage and slots for big alpha weapons. AND DPS is stupid because they are squishy.

Champion LAM is fucking incredible. 4 missile hardpoints and the ability to instantly be anywhere on the map in a heavy chassis with that level of armor is bananas. AI doesn't really know what to do with it though

You have received the Kestrel mission, I was beginning this mission just now, the Generals are a bunch of incompetents, even that I nearly lost the mission, I hate defending outpost, now when they swarm you with enemies, the only Mechs that I not love are the Black Jack and the Shadow Hawk, maybe because this are your starter mechs in Battletech, and I had to play a lot missions with them to finally understand the mechanic of how salvage new mechs, Battletech is way more complicated than Mechwarrior 5.

Anyone else have issues refitting the LAM? Every time I’m in the mechlab it won’t let me start the work order saying that the chassis doesn’t support jump jets. Using the same mod pack as Bara and they’re all updated.

What are those quirks I keep seeing for the mechs, is that a mod or something? I dont see it in my game. Also, all these slots for the engine and other modules?

the mech quirks and the additional slots for the engine and etc comes from the mod Yet Another Mechlab. at this point i dont think i'll would play mw5 without it

You seem to have the LAM control down, but the build is bad and you're playing way too aggressive. Both engagements you jumped way ahead of your lance and were fighting solo until they caught up, this is not a good strategy. If you're going to engage without your lance you need to fly to cover or stay in the air and circle or strafe, and again I'd recommend pulling some of the LAM JJs out to reduce heat build up so you can stay in the air longer. I think a better approach is to put your lance in a hold position, finish the mission with the LAM while scouting all the enemies, then move your lance to engage the enemies you want to salvage. The rest of your lance has way more dps and armor, if your LAM is getting agro from multiple mechs you're making the mission more difficult than it needs to be. Even a single urbanmech can be dangerous, the ones with inferno SRMs will wreck a LAM if you are bold enough to try to fight solo on the ground.

lol bara really need to learn how to run/fly lams lol tough more fun for us laughing how he gets shot down flying right in front of enemies lol... and that altillery mech was one of those unknown mechs wich was fighting againts davion assassins so he could have just let fight for while and not blow up lam again lol

2 inferno srm6 are pretty good, 3 will let you lock down multiple enemy mechs with heat

@dakkath414 have you got any insight on magpulse vs inferno for SRMs? I never get them both in the shop at the same time so I never 1:1 compared them but inferno just seem outright better, why do I need to scramble their radar if I can just turn the mech off? I semi understand magpulse LRMs because I don't think inferno LRMs exist but the yacw mod is so weird idk.

That is the only reason why my main mech is the longsword archer. Four SRM inferno and the targets are grounded for you to chop em’ up with the longsword

@@jrockoclock7088I personally prefer inferno over magpulse, but there are a few situations in which magpulse are better. The first and most obvious example is in LRM form since you can turn off enemy mechs from a larger distance, since Magpulse LRMs also generate heat on enemy mechs, though it comes in one medium-sized load of heat instead of delayed heat like the inferno. To that we have the added bonus of scrambling sensors for a while, which makes magpulse rockets more into glorified burst fire PPCs. The scrambling temporarily lowers the enemy’s skill level, making their piloting, damage reduction and aiming go to hell for the entire duration of the effect. It’s very good when you are surrounded by multiple mechs and can’t focus fire on one of them without being under heavy fire yourself. A single shot from some magpulse SRMs can make a very big difference in a massive fight. In short: Inferno SRMs: barely any damage, slow buildup of heat. Magpulse SRMs: close to normal damage, small amount of heat, hit enemies have lowered accuracy, evasion and damage reduction Magpulse LRMs: like SRMs but on a long range and more rockets, meaning, more of everything Magpulse SRMs provide

i think if you used the lam as intended and not as an assault mech it would be fine, you may think its less entertaining to watch but part of the game is to make c-bills to spend and not just finding junk.

You always do more damage to allies than enemies. Try at least to play it like it matters to characters and contracts.
