Barbados has become the world's newest republic, officially removing Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state.
In an overnight ceremony in the capital, Bridgetown, Dame Sandra Mason was sworn in as president.
The Prince of Wales and Barbadian singer Rihanna attended the event, which coincided with the country's 55th anniversary of independence.
In a speech, Prince Charles acknowledged the "appalling atrocity of slavery" the Caribbean island had suffered.

How are "they" self governed when only 20% of people supported this move and that was according to an unofficial poll not even a referendum on the subject. They certainly didn't ask for my vote and I'm a Barbadian citizen!

"A show of national pride" if only the British people were allowed to do such a thing. Over here it would be deemed as racist to have any national pride! I'm looking at the comments and there is a huge amount of praise for the government decision, as there was not a public vote. When the UK left the dictatorship of the EU the people who voted to leave were screamed at for being "racist", I'm simply pointing out the double standards of some people. The Queen was merely a figure head and never got involved or undermined the politics of Barbados, unlike the EU is still doing to the UK today. I wish the Barbados good luck in the future, especially as it is having dealings with China. I hope the people know what is happening to the other countries that allow China to invest in them, it doesn't end up good. Beware Barbados, look at what is happening in Africa, it's a takeover.

@@icarusstudio6960 The EU never offered the UK any options, they made it as hard as possible for us to leave. The even tried to suggest that we didn't even know why we voted to leave and they wanted the UK to have another vote to change our minds. It wasn't a knee jerk or emotional reaction for anyone that I've spoken to who voted leave. We just got fed up with years of not having any say. On the other - the UK (private sector) really tried their best to accommodate many of us with good shipping during this shipping crisis as the Americans routinely delayed/pilfered/cut off many of our international orders. From what I have read, the slave owner was compensated big time for each slave that they owned. But, each slave after emancipation, had 5 years still to "work out" his slavery before he could really be free. I am interested in hearing about the Irish slaves that were allegedly sent to Barbados. I can only speculate that they were defined by the way they spoke. Also, what became of the African slaves who lived in England before abolishment. Were they exported to the caribbean?

@hi-ve1cw
@hi-ve1cw 2 жыл бұрын
There were hardly any African slaves in Britain to begin with as almost all of them were sent to work on plantations in America and the Carribean. The slaves that did live in Britain were generally household slaves, but even then this was quite rare. The free black population was much larger than the slave population in the UK, although neither population was very large tbh. Slavery was technically never legal within Britain, it was just legal in the british colonies. The loophole was that slaves were considered personal property, so if you had already bought a slave elsewhere then they couldnt be confiscated, but if the slave escaped in the UK they were free and couldn't be resold. So by the end of the 18th century approximately 1% of the population of London was made up of free ex slaves. They were nearly entirely men, so they married local british women, had mixed kids, who then married local brits, and so on, and so their descendents eventually became incorporated into the white british population. The black people currently living in britian are all from post WW2 immigration from africa and the caribbean, the descendents of the freed slaves in britain all look white now

@@CaseyTurnerMusic China is just taking advantage of the arrogance of the United Kingdom across its colonies. Who wants a head of state who can't take care of the needs of its colonies? When you have a dollar you got plenty to share. This demonstrates that you can take the true believer out of Barbados, but not Barbados out of the true believer. How awe inspiring and delightful to witness the grass roots values of a true believer from a small country being made manifest true to heart, honoured and shared with the world. Ancestors said that one has to have courage and vigilance to follow the path of the Warrior. This person is a true Warrior Spirit - a compassionate ambassador of the voiceless, a stalwart purveyor of truth and an exemplary practitioner of human kindness.
