Since Barbados did not even exist as a geopolitical and legal entity until 1966, the current government has NO LEGAL STANDING to sue for reparations for slavery that ended many years before it even existed. The slaves themselves OR their legal descendants may have a slight chance of launching a class action for reparations, however, they would have extreme difficulty determining exactly whom they were going to sue and on who's behalf they were suing. Would they be suing Spain, Portugal or Britain? Since Britain ended the slave trade in 1807 and brought forward full emancipation of the slaves in 1834; should they be held to account? Since Spain was only involved for so few number of years and actually were not bringing slaves into Barbados, but capturing Caribs who lived on Barbados and trading them to other islands; should they be exempt? Exactly which peoples should be receiving benefits from reparations; Which descendants of which slaves should be eligible for reparations? Should it include descendants of slaves from The Bight of Biafra, the Gold Coast, the Bight of Benin? Should it also include descendants of Caribs from Barbados itself or from other Caribbean islands? Let's just postulate that it covers only slaves traded from Africa; what damages did these people suffer? Would they have been better off, if left in Africa? If they had been left to their own devices in Africa, would they have created their own version of Wakanda or would they have simple been sold off by Muslims or by the Portuguese to some other customer.

It is mind boggling when you get into colonization and reparations. In the case of ex colonies such as Barbados let’s look at the value of real estate and territory that was given to them at independence. If it’s a question of reparations for being brought there as slaves we are talking about three centuries ago. Barbados needs to get their heads down and make use of the resources they have inherited for free - that is the value of the reparations. I almost wish my own ancestors had been slaves.
