Ignorant comments. Phoenicians were Black African people. The people of Tunisia today represent the people who won the wars over centuries of human migration (i.e. Arabs, French). If you cant understand why the people of Tunisia today look completely different than the people of Hannibal's time, then just look at United States, Canada, or Australia. The population of those countries are not reflective of what they were centuries ago, let alone thousands of years ago. The race/appearance of populations change over time, so if you can't understand that 2400 years ago indigenous people in Africa looked African, then you would probably have issues understanding how people in South Dakota or Manitoba or Sydney (Australia) were not mostly Caucasian 400 years ago.

Go back to a history book my man. All the coins and statu3s of hannibal were made later after his death. The most popular ahnnibal statue was acrually made by an artist who just sculpted the average Carthaginian man of his century(the artists century). And back in hannibals days, the arab expansion havent even began yet. So the north of africa and even the mediterannean was FILLED with all races. From black to white to arabic etc etc. So altho i agree that we cant just jump to the conclusion that he was black just because we feel like it, the odds are still not against it.

@Piper.luv13 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct in that Hannibal could probably trace some of his ancestry to Phoenicia, but Phoenicia had already been conquered by the Persians and the Alexander the Great. Therefore, the pure Phoenician culture was now mixed with Persian and Hellenistic culture. Hannibal was born in present-day Tunisia, which is in Africa. Therefore, that does make him a sub-Saharan African man.

I m half Tunisian. I know a bit about North African history and demographics. The average person in Tunisia is still AT LEAST 60% Berber. Carthage was a Phoenician settlement (people from modern day Lebanon) North Africans (including Egyptians) are mediterranean people. They are not white European, nor are they Sub Saharan African and I am sick to death of white and black supremascist groups claiming these civilisations whilst writing their ACTUAL descendents out of history. My own great grandmother was Egyptian by the way. I know that the region has become Muslim (I myself am an atheist) and Culturally Arabic , but genetics do not lie. Even today the average Tunisian owes at most 20% of his or her ancestry to the Arabian peninsula. We are mixed. The Empire did extend in to Southern Europe but the base of the civilization was in Africa. By your logic because the Roman Empire extended in to Western Asia Rome is actually in Asia! This is the type of foolishness one should expect from a racist. The Sahara desert did not create a barrier for Blacks. Black people are as native to North Africa as the White folk there. There are light-skinned and dark-skinned people in Africa today and the same was true in antiquity. Here is an anthropological source verifying this fact: The later movement of foreign peoples into northern Africa is well known and may explain most of the current variability. However, the work of classical European writers suggest a longstanding variability in Maghreban populations. Bates (1914) presents the ethnology of the ancient Maghreb as seen by classical European writers. The detail is such that there is little cause to doubt that these writers were familiar with the region. Snowden (1970) and Desanges (1981) reference various writers’ physical descriptions of the ancient Maghreb’s inhabitants. In addition to the presence of fair-skinned blonds, various “Ethiopian” or “part-Ethiopian” groups are described, near the coast and on the southern slopes of the Atlas mountains. “Ethiopians,” meaning dark-skinned peoples usually having “ulotrichous” (wooly) hair, are noted in various Greek accounts and European coinage (Snowden, 1970). Hiernaux (1975) interprets the finding of “subsaharan” population affinities in living Maghrebans as being solely the result of the medieval transsaharan slave trade; it is clear that this is not the case. Furthermore, the blacks of the ancient Maghreb were apparently not foreign or a caste. Pittard (1924) notes with surprise the race of the remains found in the Sarcophagus of the Priestess of’ Tanit in Carthage, noting them to be Negroid (see also Bertholon and Chantre, 1913). Source: Studies of Ancient Crania From Northern Africa AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY 83:35-48 (1990)

I'm going to point this out and then probably drop the subject bc i'm tired of debating... The statue your probably talking about, a marble bust with a helmet, was made during the renaissance period over a thousand yrs after Hannibal's death. They had no clue what he looked like, the best reference to get an idea of his features would be coins of which he appears to have bi-racial features. But even those were made hundreds of yrs after his death, in summary Cathaginians, like many other societies of the period, had intermarriage for political and military alliances. And ethinic features had carried little concern bc thier was no racism in the modern institutionalized sense.

This is a severe case of WE WUZ KANGS. The Phoenicians were a Semitic people. Sub-Saharan Africans are not Semites. The closest relatives to the Phoenicians were other Semites, namely the Jews, the Arabs, the Lebanese, the Egyptians, and the Assyrians. These people still exist to this day. They are not Sub-Saharan either. I'm not saying they didn't interact. What I'm saying is that they were a distinct people with traces that still exist today, and you are conflating them all because they lived in Africa.

carthage was a phenician city like many other phenicians cities across the Mediterranean. phenicians are a semitic people from today's lebanon. not Black African. Hannibal was from an aristocratic phenician family. generals from father to son. his mother was iberian as his father was posted on the phenicians cities in today's Spain. carthage did not have a carthaginians army. all phenician outposts used mercenaries from the surrounding populations to build their armies. only the high ranking generals were carthaginians including hamilcar (his father and hannibal) hasdrubal his brother and brother in law. none of these were black Africans. when it comes to carthage the army recruited the numedian berbers to defend the city. Numedians represented by their berber king Massinissa were not black Africans either.

Charles Jr this has nothing to do with white people. Carthaginians were a mix of Canaanite and North African Berber(amazigh) or the ancestors of current North Africans. Canaanites were in modern day Lebanon, and Lebanese have 93% genetic similarity to the ancient canaanites. Lebanese and North Africans look fairly similar already and they look nothing like Western Europeans I.e Hannibal and the carthaginians were tanned and middle eastern looking but not Arabian and definitely not sub Saharan African. The romans didn’t whitewash history, they didn’t call carthaginians black because the ancient Romans and Carthaginian probably looked fairly similar already

When your people went on invasion escapades into tropical climates, they sealed your fate. The traits of whiteness (low melanin, lighter eye colors, thinner hair) are no longer adaptive for most areas in which whites reside. So those traits will lessen with each generation. Phoenicia was located in modern Lebanon. The people spoke a Semitic language. They were not Europeans. I would like to see your DNA analysis that confirms that Phoenicians or Carthaginians were European. Ancient North Africa was phenotypically diverse. There were light and dark-skinned people in the region. Here's an Anthropological source for reference: The later movement of foreign peoples into northern Africa is well known and may explain most of the current variability.

Nothing wrong with this depiction of Hannibal except his complexion. His nose and lips on the coins depicting him are huge and obvious african features, so they got that correct. But based on his location of North Africa he was most likely a mix, black african and north african(arab) look. This guy is full sub saharan african which idk if is accurate.

Hannibal might not have been 100% sub-Saharan black, but he definitely wasn’t white. Since it was around the time the Berbers and Arabs migrated to northern Africa, through years of settling and mixing, he had darker skin with African and Arab features.

@@fFIeXi Just go away and stop stealing our Tunisian history. I am tired of this. Carthage had a similar or the same climate as Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy, a Mediterranean climate. The Carthaginians probably looked like these peoples, with brown/black hair and a darker skin. But black? No. Fun fact : The Romans were also black.

Let me give you another example in 1778 Argentina black population was around 40% now that percentage is in the 3-5 range, this is what happens when your country is a huge migration site, now that was only 300 years imagine what 2000 years of change can do.

@@Ma1q444 Carthage the empire doesn't exist anymore but the descendants of the once carthagians are modern day Tunisians. Most nations in the world haven't really changed, we look the same as our ancestors from thousands years ago. The only countries that experienced this change are countries that experienced mass immigration like the USA, Canada, France.. Tunisia never experienced that, the studies on our DNA show that the average Tunisian has over 80% native north African DNA (amazighen). The carthagians were mostly native north Africans and the carthagian elites were mixed with Phoenician as the were of Phoenician descent.
