In this episode of the forest kitchen at the off grid cabin, I build the stone barbecue and pillars for the counter top and grill ham and eggs for breakfast on the stone barbecue.

I am amazed at the amount of work you have done with a minimum amount of equipment except for hand tools. You are a very hard working person and you should be proud of your accomplishments. Your episodes are not only educational but they have some amazing scenery and carry a good message. Cali is a treasure and she must be a great companion. Thank you for a great series.

Golly, yes! I was trying to work on building our drystone retaining wall, with my husband, and the new neighbours music was blaring from their new, industrial work shed. Ruined it for me. You need silence when positioning irregular shaped rocks, into irregular shaped gaps. We used to have the wind, leaves and birds this channel loves to share. I miss it.

Hahaha mate you are seriously gifted when it comes to wood...but that is the ugliest BBQ I've ever seen...and you're going to have a real job adding a stone veneer that looks good and remains attached. IMO better options would be a rendered sand finish, form it up and build a new wall around it (properly this time) or (what I thought you were going to do) clad it with split logs and a nice timber top each side . I honestly cringed several times when you poked the bolts into the concrete and then tried to keep them straight. The bolts need more than just the head to anchor into the concrete and you can buy premade things (4 x threaded rod with a 'cage') used for casting into concrete slabs and later bolting down a steel column. I mean no offence, in fact my ugliest BBQ comment was meant as good natured dig. You're incredibly talented when it comes to all things wood. But concrete and rocks...not so much. Yet. :-P

So much with you on your "speach" of self reliance. That is the way, in better or worse. If SHTF thats your ticket. If not, its a way to live proper and according to your enviroment, without handouts and contributions. I truly believe that mankind must be more atune to nature, for it to work. Hi Shawn..what a great job of your outdoor kitchen. It will be so nice to use too in the hot summer when you don’t want to heat up your cabin. If you get hold of an Avon lady, maybe your wife knows of one, get some skin so soft bath oil...has to be oil...and it truly works for mosquitos! My husband and I when we went up camping way up on the Magnetawan River,we always took it to stop deer flies, and black flies, and mosquitos from biting. It works but it is oily! I love watching you work and making things....and making a beautiful place to live. So peaceful.❤️👍

Terri, millennials are not the ones who filled the atmosphere with CO2 and polluted the environment for decades, they often work two jobs to afford their rent due to the lack of wage increases in the last 40 years, they have massive college debt because of massive inflation to education costs, and they have to fix all those problems because of the selfish baby boomers. Of course there are some awesome baby boomers I've admired but the facts remain that baby boomers lean conservative and now that they are fading away that demographic will have less and less influences on elections, a good thing.

Two things. 1: use masonry cement that uses an fine aggregate. Make sure your sand to cement mixture is correct for your climate. 2. You could ave used the scafold above your oven to drop masonry lines for your post corners. I grew up a stone mason. Make sure you have a nice pile of stone before you ever start your project. When you think you have enough double it. It would have been nice to see you bring in some fire brick from town for your fire box on the oven. Now for the praise. You did an awesome job on that. I know your not happy with how the Vander looks and that is okay. I can tell you were improvising a lot. You put a lot of heart into your projects and I apretiate the fact that your out there giving it a go.

As someone who makes videos on a variety of channels I gotta say I think he will appreciate that. Construction of anything also takes much longer as you have to stop to set up shots but also hold your body in odd ways to make the process visible to the camera. I really appreciate what you said at the end about learning skills to be self reliant. I agree completely. As a retired widow, I live somewhat comfortably, but I have started a vegetable garden on my little plot of land at my home. Right now I am reaping the harvest and saving money to make money stretch in other areas. Since I lost my husband, Mr. Fix It, I am having to learn skills, handling a mitered saw, drill, hammer and nails, to fix things around the house myself. And now, with the US government leadership in shambles, I have lost faith and confidence that they will protect and provide needed services that are affordable. Doing the "Self-reliance" thing is so much more vital now than ever before. Thank you for your videos.

Bravo Shawn! You must have an incredible sense of accomplishment! Truly a work of art....and one step closer to self-reliance. I have just framed, boarded and insulated a 4 season cabin with help from my 80 year old father, on a property in Ontario where i hope to relocate in two years. Much work is needed but i gather momentum every time i watch you fulfill YOUR dream. I am a 55 yr old woman, it has been very challenging and i feel the most difficult is behind me. The bugs, slivers, humidity and poison ivy have pushed me to my limits. The birds, crickets and spring peepers call my name. The wild edibles and the solitude keep me real. My new pullover and coffee mugs will be a daily reminder that i am not on this journey alone. 😉

The sense I get from watching these videos is a person so engrossed in his work that he’s truly living in the present moment free from a noisy mind that relives the past or is anxious about the future. That’s where are best work comes from, that’s where athletes find the flow state...right now is always the best place to be. This shows in the quality of your camera work as well which make these videos so enjoyable to watch and coincidentally has a similar effect on the viewer. My anxious mind shuts the hell up for a bit while I watch your show and try to pick up some tips and tricks from your work. Thanks for the great content!

I am a two year "newcomer" to this channel. But really started following you within the last year. A suburban dweller who now wants to build a grill like this in his backyard! Thankfully my lot is fenced in and no one will complain about my "unsuburban-like" backyard. Now if only I didn't have to mow my front lawn!

I make a homemade after bite lotion that helps a lot from bentonite clay, sea salt, baking soda, water and essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus, chamomile and comfrey. Draws out a lot of the toxins and infection, calms the irritation and takes down the swelling very quickly.

ALRIGHT......meet my Paddy. Got her finally as my avi. I do love my dog (s). I have had many in my lifetime. They are the best companions & confidants. I am trying to catch up from the ground floor on your episodes. Still doing some hopping around, but I am still enjoying & learning a lot from them, which I share with my son. He is very crafty with his hands & loves all kinds of crafts. He does electrical, wood.....all kinds of things. He is also enjoying your info. Thank you for sharing.

Hello, Shawn -- Great video, your outdoor kitchen is looking great, you make my Fridays a little brighter. Wow! Politics, I have wondered what your political thoughts may be. I do agree with your message we can only hope the the younger generations wake up to the fact that so much is being taken from us, hopefully future generations can restore the balance that is sorely needed. Here in the states it is out of control our government, the media and big business all want to control every aspect of your life. Hopefully you can help save Canada from the same fate.

What a fine place.....biggest investment was blood, sweat and sweet tears....I'm sure. "If I were younger" :) post WWII baby directed down the path of "obtaining"...what a bummer. Having accumulated "stuff" our entire lives, we now have given most of it away and are focusing on a very simple life. I admire you going for it at a relatively young age. To you younger folk out their...make your lives as simple as possible. It will free you up to enjoy life as it should be....simple but full.
