In episode 7 of the forest kitchen at the off grid log cabin, I begin building the covered shelter for the clay (earthen) pizza oven, starting with the foundation and the support posts for the wood roof. Cali, my golden retriever, watches me work from the shade of the outdoor kitchen pavilion. It's so hot that she is not her usual playful self, until I take her swimming at the end of the video.
I use my chainsaw and chainsaw mill to rip two pine logs into half rounds to cover the edges of the table top that will support the earthen oven.
It's been so hot this summer that my dog, my wife and I take a lot of time off from the heat of the forest to enjoy the many lakes and rivers that are near the cabin.
Near the end of the video, I talk about family issues, self reliance, working in the trades and becoming productive members of society.
Tune in next week to see me build the foundation of the earthen oven with cordwood and concrete. And, if you haven't checked out my other KZbin channel, click on the link below to see more of what goes on at the cabin and what's on my mind.

I really enjoy your videos. I'm a 68 year old trapper in the mountains of South Carolina and I learned a long time ago. Don't pay any attention to what others say about you. Truth be known, they would give their eye teeth to be right there where you are. When I go in the rivers, woods and streams I leave all that hassle behind me that others look forward to every day. I live my life to please my God my family and myself and piss on what the others think or say..

Lonnie Bryant I couldn’t have said it better and I’ll tell you the truth; I work as a skilled tradesman but every time I’m able I’m in the woods. I seem to find a better part of me there (maybe it’s because there I set my own timetable)

Exactly... People who always have complaints or, are critical of others who are moving forward with their lives, are people who are trapped in their own inadequacy, self-loathing, self-hating shallow, meaningless lives! They have absolutely no direction, aims or asperation! They feel unnecessary, so they project their meaningless circumstances, on to others instead of setting goals for themselves and working towards them. They are to be pitied.

I am 65 year old female, who raised two sons. Raised them in the country and I moved to the city, but by far I love the woods and the outdoors so much. I love growing my own food, canning and so forth. I miss it so bad that I plan to move back to the wilderness. What I want to say is that you could have not said it better on the reflection of life. I agree totally.............

I was short 4 credits myself. We are about the same age. I never looked at it as any type of failure, as the education system to me does not teach the proper skills that are really needed to live. Went into the trades and some restaurant work, learned a lot of skill and people skills. I now work for myself as a handyman and am a homesteader with a family of 5. I don't have a muskoka cottage, a huge oversized boat for a small ontario lake. I don't have a motor home or $100,000 stone steps leading to a waters edge. What I do have is life and a frame of mind to enjoy it and my family. Life is all you need and most people couldn't tell you what theirs is about. Cheers Shawn, you got what others didn't get in high school, a diploma in reality and self reliance.

I remeber those comments last year about stepping up, being a man as what you defined a man to be in your comments. For me, that was the most inspiring video you've done. At the time I was wrapped up in the emotions from my mother's death, I was struggling without a job, and was struggling majorly with depression and anxiety. Now, your talk of course did not fix all that, and actually your talk was meant to say that no one is going to fix things for me and to get up and fix life and take control of my own life without depeneding on others to do it and without blaming others. That talk, Shawn, Lit a fire under my ass like had not been done in a long time. I got off my ass, stopped sleeping in, faught hard against the depression and anxiety, got help, and have been a MAN of action ever since. I now am running my own business, working hard for the success of that business and life is much better. It's not better becasue I a have no struggles, of course I still have struggles. Life is better becasue I take everyday and choose to be my own man that makes my own way, and has resolve to handle issues that arise in my life head on. I very much appreciated what you said back then. Now that it's been a yaear, I think I'll go listen to it again. Keep doing what you're doing Shawn. I appreciate your humility, drive, and determination in life. I appreciate that you're willing to give of yourself in a way that will help some like me.

Obviously your bushcraft skills are amazing. But, I hope people realize and appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos. I counted eight separate shots used just in the sequence where you go get the buckets of water. That's eight times you set up the camera, then move it (or them) and eight video segments which are edited into the rest of the production. And, that's just for 1:05 minutes of video. Plus, your artistic eye for composition, framing, pace, rhythm really make these videos a pleasure to watch. And, you make these efforts for every single production. Thanks for all of it.

I don't think you were being rude or any thing in your comments on the previous episode. You were telling how it is. I see society has down played the role of men so much in the last several generations and with many young men being brought up by single moms boys just don't have that masculine role model needed any more. I'm a single mom of two sons and I can see how they don't know alot of things no matter how hard I tried to teach them necessary stuff. Don't worry about the backlash, that just means you hit a nerve that some people don't want to admit exists.

As a man who didn't complete high school, your vocabulary and grammar are far greater than the average college grad's. And I haven't heard you use 'like' or 'actually' once! You are a self-made man, and I so appreciate that. My father didn't build a cabin, but he left the large car dealership and made a living for his family out of a little garage in his back yard. He worked hard all his life, and he taught his children the same ethics. Work hard, live honestly, owe no man. That's why I'm enjoying your videos - and your talks - so very much.

Shawn, you are unfortunately a dying breed. My husband and i to fall into that category. We know how to do things and make things that last. So many today want the little cabin in the woods, but have no idea how to build it or to maintain it. Your videos teach people that they can do things themselves, and if it isn't exactly perfect, it can be adjusted to become so. Many of today's youth think that if it doesn't work one way that they can't do it and give up. I hate that attitude! Keep trying, keep striving, make adjustments, adapt and overcome! Good job Shawn! You live the life that can be lived only by "Self Reliance". And I applaud you!

The world has some good, generous and talented people. The diversity and complexity should bring peace in our world. Personally, I think people are basically good, however the birth rate can not support the demand of good just to survive. It is time for all to address it, now! I will celebrate the child birth when both parents will be adequate to support him/her. Too many people on the planet make each one of us less valuable, sad but true, we still have time. Meanwhile, all of you, stay safe and productive, we need you!

I am a Woman of Caribbean Heritage and a mixed Ancestry , and I felt the same about my own men of African Heritage growing up both in the Caribbean and even many here in this Country ( USA).. I guess thats the reason when someone that was not of the same asked me to marry him . I took that chance. and I am happy to say he had many of the Qualities of my Dad , that made me feel protected and loved as a girl. Today as I listen to your Comments I agree . I am also happy to say I have been a Partner and had a Partner for 42 years this September and hope to be together with God's help another 42 years... So Mr. James , I like that you are doing what makes you complete and makes your Family Happy , and don't let anyone make you doubt yourself... Smile.. cant wait to see the Compound Completed...and a Home made Pizza and Bread in that Oven... A great Summer to You and Kali and Your Loved ones... Ninette Bird - The Caribbean Wife- ,

Shawn...I am continually amazed at your deep introspection and clear train of thought in your reflections. It seems sometimes as if you can see into the soul of man, and pinpoint the flaws and strengths we all share. Just as an example, it surprised me to hear you use the word "absurd" concerning your ongoing projects, because as a joke, I was going to post the 800 number for the nearest pizza chain with delivery service after I watched the first few minutes of you wrestling big rocks and heavy logs. It seems sometimes you can read our minds. Keep up the great work, and you, your family, and of course Cali have my very best wises, and heartfelt thanks.

i never thought you talking about younger men needing to step up and be men was arrogant. some of us need that kick in the pants.i was the baby out of 6 kids with older parents. there fore i never got much of a push from them to do much or accomplish much. not much was expected of me and i met those low expectations. so you're videos are an inspiration to me. makes me think more about what i really want out of this life. what i want for me, my wife and son. so thanks for the videos and your words Shawn.

Every time I see you toss that level down I can hear him yelling about taking care of his levels, in my head. Lol. I miss that man. We were friends, even after my wife and I divorced. He was a hell of a man. Broke my heart when he died. Thank you, for reminding me of him.

HI Shawn, Thanks for again another video you posted. Can't wait to see how your wood fired oven works. While your ultimate goal in building the cabin and living remotely is to develop the ability of those who are inspired of this action to be 'SELF RELIANT", self sustaining in a way with the crude use of materials available, and foremost to value and respect nature and make use of what nature provides to survive; however i just saw the inner thoughts of being self reliant that could be applied in family maters how to build and strengthen oneself (the children especially) and how to live in harmony with each member of the family and the community as a whole. Hope that we can interact more and share more knowledge and know how to be self sustaining and productive in good harmony with nature...

I'm grateful for this message. Once again you inspire me to just DO here in the suburbs. You are not absurd or arrogant, just plain truthful and wise. I don't want to use a pressure washer on my deck that needs new stain/sealer or hire someone to do it for me. So I found a safe cleaner, put a sprayer on my hose, and spend time out there scrubbing in the cool mornings and evenings. Little by little it's getting done. I'm out under the trees, productive and happy. It makes a difference - it makes me calm and happy...a single woman age 70 about to retire...I mean REWIRE!!! Thank you for sharing yourself and like Cali, allowing us to be nearby and watch you work - learning and soaking it in! You are a blessing to many.

It's nice you explaining reasons about what and why you do stuff in a certain way to the viewers. Still this is not a reality, with weird restrictions. What you achieved is extraordinary, the respect for nature pristine, not counting how many people you inspire with your videos. Who cares about some bags of concrete, or a chainsaw. I just can't wait to see your first try cooking a pizza! I'm italian, amaze me! ;)

Building a out door pizza oven is on my bucket list. I cook out doors with rocket stoves, open fire's Dutch ovens and I perfected cooking mountain pies using charcoal in a coffee can with a slot cut wide enough down one side to accept the handle with enough room to turn the iron over. I use an old should can opener to pierce a few draft holes around the bottom of the can. I put some metal rods through the sides about a third of the way up the side to suspend the charcoal. For my wife and I to enjoy a couple or pies each less than 8 briquetts will burn long enough. You can add more. It's faster than building a fire and more economical than using a larger grill. You can place it on a charcoal grill or stone and have it ready to cook in minutes.

You are so right, of course there are exceptions but most young men don't want to be independent move out of their parents homes or marry, my dad was old school served in the military for 6 years then got a job and met my mom and they married, he could build things like you do so when I watch your video's it reminds me of him, he could fix cars fix plumbing and electrical, he was the youngest of 9 children, so he learned early on to do things that needed to be done. Keep up the good work and again Thank You for the video's.

So many times in an effort to "justify" ourselves or the things we do, we attempt to make ourselves the "Benchmark" or the Bar and then demand others measure up. We do this without even attempting to grasp any of the circumstances or adversities they may be experiencing or continuing on in life having experienced. I think your "Manning -up" through self-reflection and admitting that to everyone watching your channel speaks volumes about your character, empathy, and completeness as a human being. I commend you, admire you and continue to pray for more people like you in this world we live in.

I was just thinking how creative you need to build by yourself. Making that brace to help hold that wood so you could hit it with the mallet was smart. When my husband builds things and needs another hand, it's always me :) I often help hold things in place for him. Our family is often looked at with rolled eyes. We are pretty simple people living in the country, but surrounded by folks who have city mentality and don't like our country thinking. I sew, can, make soap, make tinctures, hang laundry, raise chickens, make my own groceries, etc and we are considered "those weirdos". I do all that with ill health, too. It drives me to keep living.

I worry about the world my teenage son will have to navigate...what I can do for him, is love him, be the best father I can be, and make sure to teach him some self -reliance...exactly the kind you talk about. Like you I have experienced significant ups and downs...that is life. The more I have learned, the more self reliant I become, and the more blessed my life becomes. Keep it up Shawn you've touched a lot of folk, in a very positive way. God Bless !

Shawn, from what I've seen and heard over the last year (my serendipitous finding of your channel), your thoughts and mine are generally linear, except you are actually doing it. I turn 50 this year and my Depression era, Korean War vet father instilled a strong sense of just what you are talking about here. I'm somewhere in my '5-year plan', looking at rural properties. I have had to move my disabled, 82 year old mother in with me, but my girls are both in their last year of college. It's true that life is not always ours, but we can make the most of what life has given us. I've come to believe nothing is by accident, and if we're still and pay attention, we'll find what it is we are supposed learn from these detours. As for me, I find inspiration and motivation to keep on a similar path to my own self-reliance watching what you've chosen to share. Thanks for that, and God bless you and yours.

Your commentary is SPOT ON! No one should be looked at as a "failure" if college wasn't for them. The world needs all kinds of skilled people in the work force. In fact, I think college is just a big racket that everyone was sold on but just leads to years of debt. I also believe that not everyone "deserves" to go to college. You are either college material or you're not. The best thing you can teach your off spring is to have a good work ethic. You'll always rise above the rest if you work hard and take pride in whatever you are doing. Even if it is temporary.

Shawn first let me say you said a mouthful within less than 10 mins. However I totally get what you was speaking on when it come to family, kids, and taken responsibility especially when it comes to our kids. Thank God both of my kids has and is getting secondary schooling because I too wanted them to be productive. But I don't think you owe anyone an explanation as to why you choose to do what your doing at the cabin. If that's what relaxes you let it be that. Everyone has to live there own lives and I do believe that you and your wife has done what was needed for your girls to do so. There's one thing to remember when it comes to living our lives on this earth is that its not how we start but how we finish. Hats off to you for challenging yourself with a project such as the cabin. Even though, this may not be no one else thing to do, I'm sure ppl have something that gives them meaning as well. Sorry for the long comment. Blessings to you and yours.

There is no absurdity in what you do. What “you” do is for you and what it means to you and your family. Given your channel, your builds, your trips, and how most of us men are, your comments and reflections are right on. I’m 57 and I truly wish I had found your channel a long time ago. Sure I wish I had done so much more differently. I’m happy, but I could have done more, and I think many of us, if we truly look inside, realize we could do so much more.... Keep it up! Use the materials you want and the point is you are doing it. Share when it makes sense and thank you for giving us a glance into what this is all about. Not that it matters, but I think Mike Rowe would be very proud of what you have accomplished.

I appreciate the effort to take care of things yourself. Having just squeaked by High School and doing only a little better in my Secondary Education I have been trained to "do what you do best and hire the rest". Which is in reality a limiting factor in most people's lives. Without the slightest need to stretch yourself as a man and do more than you think your capable of - limiting your own capabilities. This morning I have been inspired to take care of a project myself that I was prepared to spend over $400 for someone else to do. It's a small beginning but I believe this project will stretch me a little farther than my comfort zone - or is it my compliancy zone? Earning the satisfaction of taking care of my own stuff and relying less on paying other people to do what I could (and should) take care of myself. I may not be building an off grid cabin (yet) but I am inspired to be a bit more self reliant on myself and a little less reliant on others. Thank you for this great series of videos but mostly for the inspiration to expand our own self reliance as men.Stay cool and stay self reliant.
