Salon guy understands the difference. I'm a barber, and I have no desire to cut, color or style long hair. I'm good at my specialty, and I'm busy all the time. I'm glad there is a distinction between barber's and hairstylists.
@jason_v123452 жыл бұрын
Could you define "long" hair? Most guys with a decent head of hair want the clean fade that a barber does well, but they also want texture and style on the top: a pompadour, messy fringe, modern comb over, etc. Who is the right person in that situation?

I went to barber school in Mississippi, then transferred my licence to Louisiana (Nola area). I'm considered a Barber Stylist. I chose the barbering program because my mother was a "beautician" and I knew a lot about women's hair, so I wanted to learn more about men's. I worked in a guys "sports themed" shop for 2 yrs, doing all sorts of fades, military cuts, kids, business cuts, etc. I've worked the past year in a salon and have learned a lot from the other cosmetologists. I do color, and women's hair, but most of my clients are men. Being trained in male and female styles works great for undercuts and longer men's styles, as well as women's razored pixie cuts. I love being a female barber because I love making my guys cover shot ready. And I love to glam up my ladies. Not being limited is fun. Watching Salon guy videos has allowed me to cut more confidently. Thanks!!

I have recently started watching your videos and this is another great video. I tend to travel a lot and have gotten haircuts all over the country. I couldn't agree with you more. Right around the time, the undercuts became a fad barber shops gained great popularity but as you mention, it really depends on the haircut you're going for. If I were to break it down myself from my personal experiences, barbers tend to have great experience in terms using clippers and generally do a great job on the sides and the back but don't have much of an idea about the rest. I have straight thin hair and once a barber used thinning shears on my hair to the extent that I lost a lot of density and styling my hair was a pain. In my opinion , a hair stylist will understand your needs better and take their time. In most case, a hair stylist can do what a barber can but not vice versa. Keep up the great The Salon Guy. It is very nice to hear these things from a professional rather the "know it all" bloggers out there.

A big difference I notice is that hairdressers tend to block off their haircuts around the sideburns and back of the neck. They do not take the time to taper the haircut, even just slightly as to make a more masculine outline. A nice taperd outline is a must even if it's a longer haircut. It also makes the haircut grow out properly. I don't believe they have the knowledge to do it. It's interesting as I watch tv shows with my kids or movies that have teens, boys or young men in them that their hair is almost always blocked off. It looks not finished to me.

In the 80s I moved away to college , always went to a barber . My hair was longer then not faded/ tapered as it is now. I'd usually just have some of the bulk trimmed off the sides and back. So I tried this local unisex shop/salon. Inside, it looked like grandmas beauty parlor. A bit awkward as I've never had a haircut by a beautician/ hairdresser before. First, one of the elderly ladies on the staff shampooed me . Never had that done in a shop before. Then, another woman probably as old as my grandmother cut my hair using a razor to thin out the bulk. I thought it looked good and was pleased. But it was quite different from a barbershop visit. For $7 I couldn't complain because the results were good and I did go back.

As a master barber in CT. I must say you cannot survive out here as a barber getting $30 for a men's haircut if you are not able to do long and short hair. Especially in today's world. I dislike when people try to put barbers in a box and say "ohh your a barber, you only do short hair". Today's modern barber is not what your fathers barber was. I should know. My father is a barber of 46 years. But he never adapted to today. He has a ton of regular customers. Doesn't need anymore. It's all about what you want to get out of the craft. I wanted to evolve. And I did. Don't put labels on people. Barbers get a bad rap because a lot of ethnic barbers dont know what a scissor looks like. And some don't have licenses. If you are versatile your chair will fill up fast. You only have two hands. Do better work, always learn and take your time and up your price to reflect your skill. People will pay if you deliver every time. Men are loyal to a good barber. Guys like Steven are rare. It's difficult to be great at hairdressing/styling. And being a great Barber.

I do not like going to barbers because they seem to be super "macho like" and "masculine" and if I go in for a small trim, or to get my longish hair texturized, I feel like they'll belittle me, or just chop it off. I'd prefer going to a salon and have a woman or a gay guy do it.

If I can add my two cents: I'm licensed in California and feel like I'm well versed in both men's and women's hair. The biggest difference for me between a barber and a hairstylist is being able to shave. In California we are not licensed to use an unguarded razor bald, so no shaving for me.

I’m a barber that works in a salon. While the majority of my clients are men. I do cut women as well and have done since leaving barber school. I attended a Paul Mitchell school and their curriculum was all inclusive. I am currently seeing more and more men’s long layers and longer styles on men. I specialize in fades and shorter/medium length haircuts. That includes both scissor and clipper work. That said I am comfortable with long layers and have continued education for both longer and shorter hair since leaving school. I’m a cutting specialist, that has a barber license. I benefit from knowing the craft of barbering yet I am able to both charge and get paid what I am worth. Since I can do all things haircut I am always booked. Things are changing and in my opinion there should be only one license or no license, it’s silly it only holds us back and schools get to profit charging huge prices while providing sub par education. My school was very expensive and although it could have definitely been better, they did teach us both long and short hair cutting and did a good job teaching scissor work and the basics of conceptualizing haircutting. You don’t have to be a one trick pony.

I’m a former Paul Mitchell educator bro and I agree. School is mostly to get you to pass the state board test however private branded schools can brainwash you into that one brand. Good for you on being a hybrid! Thanks for sharing.

It sucks that there are a lot of hairdressers who aren't great at fading, which I think is important considering that the best barbers and hairdressers seem to blur the lines between both worlds. I do men's hair pretty well, considering the fact that I'm autistic and notice a lot of mistakes made by both barbers and hairdressers, as well as in my own work.

If i may add: Sometimes the haircut you want may not work with your hair texture, face shape, or without putting in effort to style it that way; just keep that in mind. This video seems to categorize people into barbers vs. hair stylists based on what kind of work they're actually DOING for customers. That's great, but I wish there were a video that explains the LEGAL and EDUCATIONAL differences (classes offered, equipment used), between a cosmetologist vs. barber, from the school you attend to the license you must have to perform certain TASKS on the public. I know it's going to vary by state, and I've heard that few states have reciprocity agreements, which is scary in itself, which means you can't move out of state without taking more classes or starting over(?) For example, if a state requires a separate barber's license to do certain things, what are those things? If the only EXTRA thing you can LEGALLY do with a barber license is to shave faces, I need to know that. If the amazing things you mention that barbers need to be able to do are only taught in a barbering school, I need to know that too. I presume a barbering school doesn't get into makeup and nails. I haven't gone to school, but personally, I'd like to do just hair, whether it's men's or women's. My goal would be to stay busy all day and up my prices due to demand once I knew what I was doing, via referrals and repeat business. (just like anyone else). I don't see anyone doing makeup in a salon, and as for nails, all you need is a nail technician, right? I like the idea of being a hybrid with hair, and I can't help but believe that if someone can truly recreate any hairstyle photo the customer brings in, (which only a small minority of stylists can do), their chair must be full all day. Why do I believe that? Cause I've known too many women who search for YEARS until they 'finally found a good stylist.' One woman I know took photos around to different so-called stylists for 6 years til she found one she liked. She had a very basic, totally straight, shoulder length style with fine hair that simply dropped straight down, so I don't know what the problem was in finding someone good. Her style was far from sophisticated rocket science.
