Mahesh Hayward hey, great vid, a lil gripe iv got with some Barbers, wondered your opinion on it.. Go into a barber, 3 barbers in there, one that you usually Like cutting your hair, couple Customers waiting and you wait for your barber to become available. Declining any of the others, there's been times when iv been called out and had to give reason as to why I didn't want them cutting my hair, I. E take too long, chatting to their mates, too quick feeling like you've been rushed, or just seem rubbish at their jobs. Long story short, do barbers take it too personally sometimes when declined for a haircut? Lol

Mahesh, I enjoy watching your videos and I'm glad you pointed some of these rules out. I'm about to get my hair cut but don't have a clue as to what style I should go for or what would look good on myself. I've never grown my hair out before always buzzed it off. Is this gonna irritate the barbers?

Same, I am going to a professional with my beard because I do not have the skill or knowlage to do my own beard yet, so is it wrong to ask the professional for advice? I might have a general idea of what I want from what I have seen but that does not mean it will suit me. But on the other things I agree, unless it´s an emergency never answer your phone, not only does it irritate and waste the barbers time but it wastes the time of all the others waiting.

My dad was a barber. Any time he took on an apprentice the first thing he'd ask them is to do a fade because they're that bloody hard.

Saying "just" is not disrespectful.. a customer will sit waiting and watch every guy get a full beard reshaping, fully styled hair cut, all these different oils and balms so when it's his turn to go HE ALMOST FEELS LIKE HE'S NOT WORTH YOUR TIME !!! They then say something like "just a fade brother" ... it's an acknowledgment that you do a lot of good stuff but he doesn't need ALL OF THAT...

Most people don’t know what they want. That’s why they go to a barber to get their input and their professional opinion. It’s not disrespectful. It’s just them, the customer, not sure of what they want. Just because you hear the word 100 times a day, that customer only said it to you 1 time in maybe a month. Don’t assume the worst in people!!

Agree with all of them except number 2. Just doesn't describe quality of work. It describe quantity (in this case). It's used to shorten a sentence. "No shampoo or beard trim or shave today, I only want some off the top and a fade". Vs "Just some off the top and fade". Seems snobbish to assume people are trying to insult you. Their only telling you what they want, which is something you just complained they don't do.

I agree although I can see why it might come off as somewhat rude as if you are just trying to ignore your barber. It could also be a culture thing I'm not sure how just is perceived in Britain but it's very commonplace in America and most people I know usually order food like that e.g. "yeah I'll just have the pasta."

Not sure where he’s from, but where I’m from “just” in this context is used to mean “only”. Would you be offended if someone came in and just “I only want a fade”? Otherwise the conversation goes “I’d like a fade” “and what else?” “Nothing, just a fade.” Also I learned don’t get your haircut by a douche or they’ll complain about you on KZbin.

And now the other way round please .... #1 Don't suddenly go away in midst cutting to pick up the shops phone or do whatever while the customer has to sit there and wait. It's disrespectful. #2 Don't be hasty because there are 14 other clients waiting. Take your time and take every cut seriously. #3 Be prepared to advise your customer. Don't just say "jay whatever, you'l have to know what you want" when the customer asks you about your expert opinion or style advice. #4 Open the shop at time and not 15 minutes later. And don't close the shop 15 minutes earlier. #5 Don't let the customers wait for hours without anyone talking to them. Make it clear that they have been noticed. Say them how long they will probably have to wait. Ensure them that it will only take 15 minutes more (if true!). Ensure them that they have the next turn. Ask them if they want something to drink while they're waiting.

I get what you are saying with the 'just' issue however, I think people say that because they think they are asking for a pretty standard haircut in relation to trends, not difficulty to do the cut. So a fade which is the example you used, is a very common haircut these days. So ppl feel like they aren't asking for something they have to really describe to you much. That's the context of the 'just' - not saying it's an easy job.

I like the honesty. It helps me know which barbershop I would never want to step in. Honestly a lot of pettiness here, except for the problem with someone answering a phone during a haircut. While I am sure that barbers have plenty of experiences with these five things that have become a bigger problem, they are hardly worth this humorless video. Basic customer service: Your shop is busy. You've been working hard. Your customer has been waiting an hour because you are busy and working hard. You have to pee. Oh, no! Crisis, right? Nope, go over to the next customer and say "thanks for waiting! It's busy today, right? I've got to step to the back for a minute, but I'll be right back and we'll get started." Crisis averted. By the way, good on you, you were honest and selective in your clientele. Don't hide behind a "it was a little tongue in cheek" comment. Stand your ground and be proud you were honest, or back down and delete the video. Anything less is... weak.

You make a good point with them using the word "just." While it may not always be the case, it frequently does come across as belittling your work. Many of the other comments seem to think it means nothing but the haircut, no beard trim, no shave, etc... Sometimes that may be the case. But I can tell when they mean it in a way that shows they think it's a short haircut so they have the impression there's nothing to it. Lot's will say something like: JUST fade it, I'm easy. Simple, Simple! Because they are not barbers they have no idea that a well done fade is the hardest most tedious men's haircut there is! Fuller styles are much easier.

I don’t agree with if someone doesn’t really know what they want. As a professional YOU should be able to look at their face shape or style and with some questioning and recommending be able to suggest a suitable style. Given the same example you gave, if someone were struggling to make a decision at a busy restaurant, generally the waiter would recommend certain meals. And don’t sook about ‘Just’.

The *Brits* lost the *American Revolutionary War* because people in the eastern colonies had better tactics and strategies. Not to mention that the colonial Americans of the Eastern Colonies had the French as an ally. The Brits owned an entire quarter of the world at one point, you need to learn your history.

Honestly not everything the clients fault , we can help aswell with guiding them with just a few words 🤦🏼‍♀️ for example I always tell my clients when im done with a previous client and they are waiting for me ” just hold on a minute love I will be right there with you , you can sit tight here and I will come and get you” some people go to a hairdresser once a year and go to a new one everytime and they cant just magically know the rules of every new place. Or when they say ” just a fade ” or whatever why would I be insulted? They dont know what goes on behind learning and I cant expect them to know. Also ALOT of clients feel like a burden if they come with super detailed haircuts or requests so I like to help them out a little bit so before they start telling me what they want I say with a very happy encouraging voice ” alright tell me exactly what you want!” And then when they start telling me I start asking more in depth if I feel like they are being shy or I want to know more , so they feel like they can be super honest with me. It is OUR job to guide the client and make them feel confident and happy. But I do agree about the phone thing , atleast put in some headphones if it is SUPER important 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Some of these I agree with, like waiting to be invited to the chair or not taking a call. Respect is something we should always try to exhibit. On the flip side, some of these might annoy Barbers but they should learn to deal with them. I hate it when Barbers complain about people not knowing what they want. Using your restaurant analogy, perhaps I'm unsure of what I want and I'd like an expert opinion. I might ask the waiter what the specials are or what's good. Fair call that you have a line of people waiting but if I've had to wait 30mins for my turn in the chair and I'm a paying customer surely you can afford a few extra minutes to help someone. It's called customer service; that's how you build businesses and keep clients coming back. No one wants to hear that they're a hassle because that's just rude. Respect is a two-way street.

Mahesh, I grew up in a rural country town where all the men went to the Barber for normally a bi-weekly cut for really short hair and longer between for longer hair. But respecting your Barber is something that most people do and I only really noticed the lack of respect when I moved away from the rural area. Personally I prefer a larger city but I do miss the respect of mature country guys. Now I am not talking about the cheep cuts where everything for men cost between 8 to 12 dollars cause there is not much you can expect other than a cookie cutter cut but a place where guys want to go for a really good experience. When I go to the Barber I like to take the respect that was given to my Barber in the country town and apply it to the Barber in the city as your likely to get a more personalized time in the chair. Bye the way, I love all the Beardbrand videos as they are most helpful all the way around for both client and Barber. I am now living in Lakeland, Florida I wish I could find a Barber that knows how to cut and style a long full beard. Last time I went for a beard trim and style it turned out regretful situation. I thought I was quite clear in what I wanted to achieve and what I did not want. I don't know if the Barber did not understand me or if he was unsure on how to clean up the beard to create the look I wanted. I guess next time I will have to check out reviews as word of mouth is subjective when you only have one person referring you to their Barber. Lakeland is not as large as Orlando or Tampa/St. Petersburg and there is not that many people that seem to have longer beard and look like they just a tempt to cut it themselves. Right now I feel stuck having to cut it myself and hesitation keeps me from trying to shape my beard since I have no mirror plus eye-hand coordination.

@@Beardbrand Would you say it seems to just be one of those bad habits that we need to work on? It's just a habit that seems to exist in the world, but I guess it isn't just easy fix a bad habit. But then again, letting just one word get under your skin is a pretty bad habit that people just have to get over... even though it is hard. Thinking about it, "just" is often used with a task that is difficult, unattractive, and not very enjoyable, so maybe when people say "just a fade" they are actually recognizing the agony they are asking you to go through for them. But those are just my thoughts... and, yes, I am just being a jerk now. Seriously though, think it over.

Gents barbers have a higher rate now a days; this guy just shouts a bit entitled. Maybe some new thought management techniques would mitigate some of those "barber gripes". Thinking about how customers feel in a busy shop (and most likely experiencing a busy day also have better things to do than sitting or standing in some cases for ages in a packed reception; waiting to be seen. Never seen an appropriate queuing or booking system in barber shops with simple leaflets for customer guidance. Can't understand why "the boys" are surprised by these issues that occur; its your barbershop business/environment; do something for your customers to make it easier, instead of winging at the people who make your business. What a spoon! Lol

I firstly take a day to get my trims on a day when I have nothing else planned. I bring a book. When I sit in the chair, I inform my barber if they need a smoke or a break , go ahead, I can sit in the chair, and admire their tools and license for a bit. Nothing worse then a stylist who feels the combined pressure of waiting clients, having to use the restroom, and needing a smoke. When they ask what we are doing, I always ask for their suggestion, as they know current styles, and can match my head and face shape by using their vast experience. They also can see the condition of my hair and beard, so I heed their words. Finally, I put them at ease, because I always tell them to relax, all this stuff grows back, and worst case scenario, we take a number 4 guard to everything and try again in 6 weeks. Believe me, I have had some very nervous hair stylists. In the end, I always tip 30 percent, if the stylist is pleasant and engaged. I find the visit to the barber therapeutic, and refreshing. Good conversation, some laughter, and good feeling when I walk out.
