How to blacken steel (hot oxide):
A mixture of caustic soda (700g), potasium saltpeter (250g) and water (1,2 l)
The temperature of the solution should be kept between 120 - 140 C.
I keep the knife inside for about 30 minutes to get consistent black colour, you can manipulate the time to achieve different results, shorter period should give you dark brown or purple - ish colour.
Be careful - this mixture is highly corrosive!
Heat treatment:
-Austenizing temperature: 830 C
-Tempering: 180 C
Specs:
Rock
Steel: 80CrV2 4mm
Length: 245 mm
Blade width: 35 mm
Blade length: 120 mm
Handle: Amazaque, brass pins
Weight: 210 g

I liked the music you used to do that sounded like quest music from an RPG 😁 That being said, half the time I'm "working" when I watch your stuff (great knives btw, I really like your style) so it's on mute anyway. Go with whatever's least hassle!

Is it common to do the stock removal post tempering? I thought most stock got removed prior to temper/heat treat?
@jonikuhn2441
@jonikuhn2441 3 жыл бұрын
Can be done either way and each has its own advantages and disadvantages: Doing it pre-hardening is easier on your belts and you don't have to be afraid of ruining your knife's temper, but the blade is more likely to warp in heat-treat Doing it after is much harder on your belts and you risk overheating especially with dry grinders but it'll stay straight more easily.
