Usually they actually have the conceit that Barbie is an actress playing the main role. There are two films that don't use this (not counting the current weirdness): Barbie Mariposa (with Barbie actually playing Elina from the Fairytopia series) and Barbie Presents Thumbelina.

Dating did exist by the Victorian era, it was just very different to dating now and involved chaperones, also that guy would never having gotten away with just asking someone out, he could have probably asked her for a dance (they look well dressed enough to have attended dances), otherwise there'd have been more family involvement. *adding my voice to the "Do a Barbie Month* choir

You know, the scene with Katherine returning to the now gone orphanage would have worked better if they let her be more emotional in both the animation and her voice. Show her dropping the bag, turning around, maybe rushing through the street to search for any of the children, becoming more and more upset before collapsing and sobbing while the snow falls down on her, as she realizes that there works be no possible way for her to find Tammy. This woman lost her child, adopted or not, she had an emotional bond to that girl and losing her would hurt. Really show how much it traumatized her and turned her into the cold woman she became.

“Ebbie” and “A Diva’s Christmas Carol” feature a female Scrooge and are probably some of the best modern adaptations. Having a female Scrooge also gives extra depth to the story by adding a theme of how career driven women feel society wants them to close themselves off emotionally in order to succeed.

The movie wouldn't be too bad, actually, it could be one of those nice guilty pleasures after waking up on a Sunday afternoon. There's basically just one big weakness: The writers thought they had to protect the poor fragile souls of children from any slightly grim and thought challenging imagery. Which is, considering that most kids aren't totally dumb and also how much most children love spooky and grim scenes, insulting towards their audience.

+Bobsheaux does the Santa Buddies movie puzzle you completely too because it just doesn't make any sense whatsoever ever. Let me explain for some in the movie Santa has two dogs ( Santa Paws and his son) with one of the dogs replacing Ms. Claus ( who is just as iconic, beloved and important as Santa Claus) explaining that for some reason Ms.Claus doesn't exist. Also the naughty list in that movie has Butterball on it which inexplicably telling us that dogs are on the naughty list too and also dogs worry about being on the naughty somehow meaning if the not on the nice list they get coal saying that dogs get presents when they are on the nice list and coal on the naughty list. Also the movie saying that Santa's elves have dogs too and that not only humans belief in Santa Claus but dogs too. The Santa Buddies film is just so confusing, illogical and absurd that it makes Alice In Wonderland and Raggedy Andy and Anne make sense and be completely logical and even sane.

Also, I hate to be the one to say this, but I've never understood the appeal of this story. So because one guy is unhappy that automatically means he's doomed? And why isn't he allow to be unhappy. HE LOST HIS FIANCEE FOR GOD'S SAKE! Yeah okay, he doesn't treat people the best, but you know what? There are so many other people who are the same way. Are ghosts gonna visit every miserable asshole on earth. Or is this one guy just that special that the ghosts decide he just has to be happy. And why do we get to decide if he's happy anyway? One person doesn't like Christmas and suddenly ghosts are kicking down your door? I can never get over stories like this where we try and shove holiday spirit down someone's windpipe. At least in the Grinch he CHOSE to become happy. Whoville didn't tie him to a chair and force him to eat an entire Christmas dinner. Oh, and are you telling me that all the misery in an entire town is affected by one guy? I'm sorry but that's bullshit. How is some kid dying his fault, especially when his father CHOSE to take a day off despite having a sick kid who probably could use the money. And here's a thought: what if Scrooge HADN'T changed? Is he just gonna keep getting ghosts until he does? I'm sorry but I hate these kinds of stories where someone tries to force another human being to change because they don't like how they are. It's like Christmas With the Cranks, though not AS bad. Great review though

Scrooge's chain wasn't as bad as Marely's, it was worse!

As for the hypocrite line... why can't I upvote this twice, dammit? As for movies meant for little girls... does that include Disney Princess movies? Agreed: Even if it's something you'd ordinarily have no business watching, or even feel a tinge of guilt over watching, a fresh perspective on it could give you a new-found appreciation for the franchise and how it ultimately stacks up against other adaptations. For me, DC (Comics or Shows) for Kids is a good example. BTW, the lady who sings that 'Barbie Girl' parody is Melissa Ktautz, a decent Sydney-based actress and singer.

I know it's just clips, and there's 90% of the film we don't see in this, but honestly from what is shown it doesn't seem all that fair to completely write this off. I've never seen it, and I'll take your word for it that it's probably overall a solid C, but it does seem like an appropriate "low stakes" version of Christmas Carol. You can't really expect it to be the mature, heavy Dicken's story when it's target audience is probably 4 year olds. The messages of crumbling friendships and having mean relatives is more relatable to small kids than death or a lifetime of terrible experiences. Not to mention it IS Barbie. Everything is going to get sugared to hell. It's not a Christmas Carol but it's really not worthwhile trying to compare the two either.

It's a weird mixup.

something this movie does that most kids movies do now a days is absolutely insult the intelligence and growth of children. it always has to be cute, and bright, and happy. there's never any conflict, there's never any real growth for the characters, and it just dumbs children down. i showed my kids the original Christmas Carol and it scared the crap out of them, which is EXACTLY what i wanted. they need to know that their decisions will haunt them, and that they should fear making greedy and self centered decisions. the whole point of a Christmas Carol was to show people what happens when you live a life of apathy, greed, and self importance. movies like this are basically the participation trophy of the movie world, just made so you won't reflect on your short comings and bad decisions. stop giving participation trophies in the form of feel good garbage like this!

I would even add if they wanted to give the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come a face then it should've been Eden's face but old, haggard, and ugly to show her the truth on the ugliness inside her.
@fablethewolf8254 жыл бұрын
Yeah, MLP:FiM has way more balls than people give it credit for. Hell, their version of _Romeo And Juliet_ actually followed though in killing off the lovers, it was just mediated by the facts that they lived long enough to produce children and that the show never actually used the word dead. And how, than, did the writers get this point across. By using code words like 'gone' or 'not with us? No, it was a sequence of stories wistfully told to the pair's children by old friends, with some very telling bits of dialogue peppered around, like how the kids want to come back to one of the friends sometime to hear more stories, or another friend saying that these things are never easy to talk about. Quality writing right there.
@jenniferschillig37686 жыл бұрын
I think the main problem with this was: A Christmas Carol is supposed to be a mixture of light AND dark--and the lighter elements succeed BECAUSE of the darker elements. Many different casts of characters have re-told this story--but Barbie is probably the one franchise that was NOT suited for this, because it depends on prettying everything up. (Just look at their version of The Princess and the Pauper--the "pauper" girl is clean and healthy with a rather nice dress!) So all the darker elements (as you point out) get glossed over. Aunt Marie doesn't look to be all that tormented, and she gets freed in the end. No painful lost love in Eden's past (what, Ken doesn't get a role as the ex-fiance who left her because of her growing selfishness?). No death for Tim/Tammy. No death for EDEN, and certainly no glimpse at her own corpse or her overgrown grave. Hell, even the scene where Aunt Marie finds her at the party is stripped of any harsh consequences--we could have seen her rant at Eden about her ungratefulness, reminding her she didn't HAVE to take her in, and threatening to leave her at the orphanage... "and you can have the rest of the day to think about it in your room with no supper." When even freakin' Mickey Mouse did a version of the story that did a better job of addressing its darker elements, you KNOW you're in trouble! Anyway, I really like that you know the story well and can quote it so well--and have such a great grip on what made it work. A much better grip on it than the makers of this did!

And thus more voice actors try to take this off their IMDB pages. Including: Kelly Sheridan as Barbie; an anime voice actor likely best known as the voice of Mammoth Mutt in Krypto the Superdog, Mystique Sonja in Hero 108, and villain-turned good-guy Starlight Glimmer from MLP. Morwenna Banks as Eden; though, you'll probably know her better as the sibling of Jeremy Hawke in The Critic, Olivia Hawke. Luke Smith as Freddy; oddly enough, he's probably best known as, of all things, the male Wii Fit Trainer! What, you think I'm joking? Look it up, it's true! Shannon Chan Kent as Ann and Nan; another voice acting alumni of MLP best known for her roles as Pinkie Pie's singing voice, Silver Spoon, and the Biskit Twins in Littlest Pet Shop. Tabitha St. Germaine as the Ghost of Christmas Past; yet another MLP alumni best known for her various roles in there, anime, and Littlest Pet Shop. And before you even ask, yes, these kinds of VAs appear quite often in this film. Kathleen Barr as both the creepy-as-hell cat and the Ghost of Christmas Present; probably best known as Kevin in Ed Edd n Eddy, as well as a few roles both in LPS and MLP. Man, if this wasn't two years before its debut in 2010, I'd swear this was an MLP reunion party! Terry Klassen as Boz/the Hypnotist; a voice director better known as Eddy's Brother in Ed Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show, as well as being the voice director of the failed Digimon cash-in Bakugan. Well, I say cash-in, but in truth Digimon kinda died down after the 90's, let's be honest. But I digress. And Pam Hyatt as Aunt Marie; a lesser-known voice actor better known as Atrocia Odora from Ace Venture the Animated Series. How do I know all this? For one, I spend probably a wee bit too much time on Behind the Voice Actors. But more importantly, I'm perhaps the most voice-knowledgable person in this comment section; being someone who grew up alongside, and wish to join the ranks of many of these normally presentable voice actors/actresses that took a wrong left-turn at Albuquerque.

Not to feed into the brony stereotype, but if you want a better example of how a "Christmas Carol for little girls" should be made( ... And, honestly, I am not a little girl, but A Christmas Carol seems like it would appeal to either gender ), I recomend the MLP:FiM episode "A Hearth Warming Tail". It is not the absolute best adaption, of A Christmas Carol, not even close( That, in my opinion, would go to the 2009 Disney movie ), it is still pretty decent: It uses the characters of MLP to tell the story in a way that makes sense, making their own spin on it while still staiyng loyal to the soul of the source material, and the most important part: ... I dont ever get the feeling it is triyng to appeal to little girls. At all. As strange as it sounds,, My Little Pony is-Not-Afraid to get heartwrenching, or even flat out scary, at times, and when it goes, the usual "cheerfull, happy-go lucky" attitude of the show, if anything, works on the favor of these moments, because you never quite see then coming. BUT, this is my opinion. While I believe that MLP is one of those shows that you should watch at least one episode before coming to conclusions, I understand that not everybody likes it. I was just saiyng why I felt that episode, was better then thi Barbie movie.
@Masterge778 жыл бұрын
This has to be hands down the worst adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic story I have ever encountered. I mean, they don't even get the ghosts right or why they're visiting her. Even Bill Murray's "Scrooged" got the ghosts right and how they worked, because Bill Murray's character was at least similar enough to that of Scrooge to be visited by the ghosts. Also, I'm all for a Barbie month, there's a good amount of material to work with there, and some of the Barbie stuff I have seen is... interesting to say at the least.

And as for Barbie not being in a Christmas Carol, Eden is Barbie with a snooty accent (provided by a different voice actress) and a slightly altered design. I don't know why they did it like this since in the past when Barbie inserted herself in the story, she still looked and sounded like herself. The wraparound story is an issue too. In the first three movies where Kelly had a problem and Barbie decided to tell her a story to help her learn/cheer her up, they had plenty of time to do so (Nutcracker, rehearsing for a performance of the ballet at a later time; Rapunzel, at home [or it could have been an art studio] while painting and other artsy things; Swan Lake, sitting on the porch of a cabin at camp during the night). As you pointed out, they have a party to go to that they will miss out on if they don't leave right now. I'm surprised Skipper (her other sister) or Ken didn't interrupt the story to remind them of this fact. Waiting outside in a car: Ken: Um, should I honk the horn. Skipper: No, that'll annoy Mom and Dad. (pause) What's taking them so long? We're already going to be late. Ken: I'll give them five more minutes before I knock on the door to see what's up. Skipper: Key's under the mat if they don't answer right away.

Good God, even Mickey's Christmas Carol acknowledged characters dying in the future! This just brushes over the possibility of death and plays things completely safe, while missing the point of the original Charles Dickens story just to twist the knife further.

I don't think he was supposed to be easy on the eyes. I think they made him ugly on purpose so his appearance would detest little girls, otherwise he would just be the cute , good little sidekick kitty like the other Barbie movies. Barbie movies have had animated cats before (see Wolfie and Serafina for example from Barbie : Princess and the Pauper). They were animated as cute, because the characters they accompanied had all good traits. Chuzzlewit here accompanies selfish Eden, so he must be ugly , otherwise little girls won't understand that the character is supposed to be bad (i know it is a flawed perception, but that's how a 4 year old girl's mind works, and that's what Mattel had to take advantage of).

will you be reviewing Casper's Haunted Christmas probably this holiday season or maybe next year for Christmas in July month?
@SageMann927 жыл бұрын
I love how most of this review consists of reciting the dialogue that SHOULD have been said, because when I'm watching most media of this sort (toy-based shows aimed at young kids, usually girls, usually with a Canadian cast), that's exactly what's running through my head. Why can't the writers just add some complexity? Kids can handle it.

What’s funny is that I heard there was once an episode of “The Real Ghostbusters” that had them go back in time, capture the three ghosts, which ended up creating a gloomy future, and they had to pose as the ghosts for Scrooge. Edit: I looked it up, and the episode in question is titled “Xmas Marks The Spot.”

I actually quite liked this movie. Even though, yeah, it does lack some important plot revelant moments. And the producers didn't have the balls to show death in the future. But I think it was more inspired by a Christmas Carol and their take on it instead of direct adaptation. By the way, the barbie in the title references how in the movies, Barbie s supposed to be the actress playing the lead. Also, I find it amusing that this is the only movie where Barbie was a bitch, and British XD. Anyway, thanks for another great review, Bobsheux!^^
@medusasea7918 жыл бұрын
This movie wasn't the best adaptation but it wasn't insultingly bad. Most of the errors come from details and they did respect the main idea of the story.

You know her past could work if you expanded on it. Her aunt locked her inside all the time so she didn't have many friends besides Catherine, we see after the party Eden was locked in her room being forced to sing until she passed out from exhaustion, at the first performance she falls in love with a generous and kind stagehand ane even plan to marry but when she gets her first major role she begins to shut him and Catherine out thinking they are inferior to her because of their jobs behind the scenes until they find comfort in each other and the stage hand breaks things off with Eden and marrying Catherine.

So I JUST noticed this after watching this movie I don't know how many times. 16:15 if you look at the portrait beside the ghost of Christmas Yet to Come... That's of her. Methinks this might be Eden's mother due to her having this portrait clearly not of her up in her room. If so, then that's kind of sad. Think about it, her views of Christmas are so negative now she can't even recognize her own mother as the spirit trying to steer her down a better path because her mind and judgement are so clouded. Maybe the ghost of Christmas Past is a sister who died along with Eden's mother in childbirth and the ghost of Christmas Present is the midwife who had to break the news to Eden in the first place.

"This Australia Day song is celebrating lamb instead of shrimp." Oh, as an Australian I can explain that. See, Sam Kekovich is the actor for a famous Australian character called Sam the Lamb Guy. He was essentially a advertising icon used to advertise, you guessed it, lamb. Plus, Barbie (Or Barbecue for you Americans.) is more traditional then shrimp. A barbie is essentially just meat in general, like sausages, burgers, steaks and, again, lamb. Shrimp is a bit of a stereotype. You'd probably find more people in Australia who like sausages then shrimp.
