I never really liked that movie simply because the characters were so different and ridiculous to the original. Basically like you showed, all character development was thrown out the window and they made Barbie play Mariposa instead of thinking of a better plot for the fairy princess and letting Barbie play her so Mariposa could stay the same to the original. Cannot stress enough how much I wish they'd just had Elina in these movies with Mariposa, especially since they brought back Kelly. I mean I wish they'd done a lot with Fairytopia in general but like imagine if Elina ended up with her own variant of shiny crystal rainbow butterfly wings?? Elina could have gone fairy kingdom hopping and gotten new bits and bobs from each place as she went, slowly representing all the different fairies in some way and having so much knowledge to share with everyone

Because mattel doesn't care about artistic integrity, they care about brand image. They cancelled Life in the Dreamhouse because it "didn't fit their intended image of barbie products". So naturally once Kelly becomes "The Barbie", they can't have anyone else

And actually in 2010 Mattell tried to replace her with Diana Kaarina as they were trying to go in a more "modern/fashion focused" direction and so they wanted a new voice actress. After a few years Kelly Sheridan was brought back for a while though after fan appeal. So seems like it was more along the lines of "we're giving people what they want" while failing to realize that this movie would have been an exception to that.
