The fact that America had to release a statement in support of Margot, while Margot did NOT release a statement in celebration of America is telling. The fact that America’s nomination is barely mentioned despite her being in The Barbie Movie is even more telling. The fact that the fans of The Barbie Movie hasn’t celebrated America’s nomination despite claiming to love that movie is most telling of all.

Barbie was a great introduction to basic feminism, it was feminism 101. But, if we're being honest it was not as revolutionary as people make it out to be. It didn't add anything new to the table that has not already been discussed. I think if you're young or you have no prior knowledge about feminism then this is a good movie to help you understand it. Other than that, Margot’s performance doesn't compare to other actresses this year. I do have to say though that I do think Greta was snubbed for best director. Also, it's crazy how their co-stars have to essentially “apologize” for even being nominated. We have a woman of color making a statement about it in her post instead of just being thrilled about being nominated. Margot wanted to be seen as a producer and she was nominated just for that which is what she wanted. Edit: I'm seeing more discussion surrounding this topic and it's crazy how many people have been overshadowing America’s nomination simply because Margot didn't get nominated. If you were truly a fan of this movie you would also be thrilled she got nominated yet it's crickets because everyone is so preoccupied with being upset Margot didn't get nominated (even though she did in other categories). If we are being honest, Barbie really only showed one depiction of feminism. The reality of the matter is that women of color and white women don't share the same struggles.

Melissa McCarthy got a nomination for Bridesmaids. No one else did, and really her performance was the one that stood out and took a lot of guts and talent to pull off. Also, Tom Hiddleston in the Thor movies has been widely praised for his performance in those movies. This is NOTHING against Margot, Kristen, or Chris because they are all incredible and committed performers but sometimes an actor really hits in out of the park in the project. As much as I loved the movie Barbie, Ryan really made the movie extra special because you could have easily hated “Ken” and think he’s a stalky loser, but there was this childishness that you still wanted to see him have a win somewhere. He wasn’t malicious, he was a forgotten toy that had only one job, being in love in with Barbie, and he failed at the assignment since she didn’t love him, and she never had to because she had to. I’m actually glad Barbie didn’t fall for him at the end since the story would have lost something.

I agree. Me, too. I am kind of glad that she didn’t fall for him in the end, as well. With that being said, I would like to add another example to your point: Jennifer Hudson (who is NOW AN EGOT) got an Oscar nomination for her performance of her role in DreamGirls. She was basically THE ONLY ONE besides Eddie to get nominated and THE ONLY ONE TO WIN!!! The crazy thing is: She wasn’t the one that was even mentioned nor promoted in the initial promotional trailers like how her cast mates such as Jamie Fox or Eddie Murphy or Beyoncé were but in the end of the movie both audiences and critics were invested or interested in her. There was NO DENYING THAT THEY WERE DRAWN TO HER - due to her compelling performance.

I think the whole "women vs. men grrrrr!" thing needs to be put aside to consider OTHER factors in play here. There are some people who take the "I hate men" narrative too far and apply it to every little thing. People arguing for the "snubbed" side also pointed out the "irony" of sexism and painting Ken/men as the villain. I think he is an antagonist to some extent, but the movie was to teach us how society's expectations are harmful to EVERYONE. Ken's song was about toxic masculinity. For some people to say" Ken was insignificant! His song didn't mean anything! He was supposed to be Barbie's accessory!" just further proves how a lot of misguided people saw the Barbie movie as an excuse to pit women and men further from each other instead of bringing that gap closer.

But I think it was a competitive year for movies and I don't know if I would call Barbie a cinematic masterpiece. And of course, a movie doesn't need an Oscar nomination chosen by a subjective panel to be considered a good movie.

I think there’s a difference between a general snub and the Oppression Olympics that’s being pulled here. I think Greta and Margot did great jobs in the directing and acting categories respectively, but it’s weird it’s being spun into a sexism argument, especially on Margot’s part, especially since both are still nominated in other categories, and the Best Actress category in particular is *for* women. You might be able to make an argument for Greta being snubbed in the director category, and how female directors are both uncommon in the industry and aren’t well-represented in the Best Director category, but that can only take you so far, especially when as far as I know, this isn’t even Greta’s best outing as director, just as you said this isn’t Margot’s best as an actress. And while it is a tad ironic Ryan got nominated, the film focused *a lot* on him, and he arguably gave one of the best performances. And ignoring or even trying to downplay the role America Ferrera played in the film and questioning *her* nomination really makes it clear that when people yell about feminism in the context of this film, it’s rarely intersectional.

Apart from the fact that not having nominations doesn’t mean not being good (it just means others were more outstanding than you this time around), as they said during the ceremony the categories are voted by other actors/directors…that means there has to be a reason why they weren’t chosen based on technical aspects. We can take America Ferrera as an example: her character’s speech during the movie on its own allowed her to gain enough relevance to be nominated.

I have to agree, yes I get the side abit about the snubbing, but the other movies last year were also very good, Especially Oppenheimer and Poor Things which tackle complex societal and emotional issues. That does not take away from the power Barbie held.

In my opinion im glad Margot wasn’t nominated for best actress for this movie only because her acting in Barbie was good but it’s was clearly just fun and not to serious and im glad she wasn’t nominated for it cuz she would have been nominated strictly because the hype she got for the movie and Margot has played better characters who are more complexed in other movies that she should have been nominated for Oscar’s for that would be a more deserving nomination then her work in Barbie

THANK YOU! So many people are getting upset over this, ignoring the great nomination America received! Her monologue is one of my most memorable parts of the movie, with "I'm Just Ken" being the other most memorable part of the movie (for me personally), so seeing their nominations felt well deserved. Heck, I reference most of Ken's lines more than anything else from the film (aside from the class "Hi Barbie/Ken" scene). I know Margot was the lead actress, and she did an incredible job, but I think a lot of the supporting cast around her did a phenomenal job! Heck, Ariana who portrayed America's daughter, Simu Liu as Ken, and Kate Mckinnon as Weird Barbie all also did amazing, and sadly I don't think they got any nominations from any award show. A lot of great talent went into this movie!! And only commenting how two women from one movie didn't get a nomination for an award also kinda defeats the purpose of the movie. Barbie was not the only movie to come out in 2023, and the other women nominated for Best Actress should be congratulated, not (possibly) feel bad cause they "took the spot away" from Margot Robbie. It wasn't like Ryan Gosling took a nomination away from Margot Robbie, OTHER WOMEN were what "took the nomination" away. I will agree though, Greta not getting nominated for Best Director does feel very heartbreaking, but there was just a lot of great talent in 2023.

Wow Honest this was a really good take! There's so much buzz of Barbie being snubbed it's hard to have a conversation about what's really the crux of how female centered messaging should be highlighted in cinema. And good on you for pointing out Lily Gladstone, its interesting how the media keeps shifting their outrage for something but p.o.c especially women get left out... (that's my two cents lol)

You're completely right. It wasn't snubbed. Barbie got Best Picture, Margot got producing, Gerwig got writing. Plus the movie was recognized in so many other categories as well. And these nominations were not guaranteed. Barbie wasn't the only movie released in 2023. One thing though, other directors or performances weren't objectively better. Voters were just subjectively more into or impressed by other choices.

I Agree w/ Honest. Margot Robbie is a great actress however I do think that there were other actresses w/ better roles in movies. And there's nothing wrong w/ Ryan Gosling getting a nomination for Best Supporting actor because he's good at his job & IMPO (In My Personal Opinion) Ryan Gosling was the highlight of the movie. I thought he was most entertaining & the funniest character in the movie. Margot was good but she's had better roles. I just wish people would shine a light on the other actresses who got nominated & praise Ryan for his work instead of tearing down other women just because Margot did not get nominated. I feel like now whenever a man or more than 1 man is nominated for something whether it's music or acting or producing even screenwriting women always pull the feminism card & say that a man does not deserve his nomination or win for something. Why can't a man just be nominated for something or win award just because he's good. Why does it always have to be about feminism. Whenever a man is nominated or wins an award for something I feel like women always want to say the reason why a ma got nominated or won is because of his gender. Why does it have to be because of gender ? Why can't it just be because the man is good ?

I don't get it with American, Barbie is an awful film, cheesy corny, and the men praises Ken, the character Ken wasn't even anywhere near great nor interesting, and his soundtrack is the worst in the movie but won Golden Globe. The movie wasn't funny or comedically worthy. From feminism point, it's even worse, it make feminism looks childish and silly. But on rotten tomatoes, both audiences and critics giving it excellent rates over 80% Idk wtf is wrong with the shitty taste but it shown. Maybe just like the music, American have different taste than the rest of the world, tasteless taste.

I feel like you've missed the point. The problem isn't that Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig didn't get nominations. Its the fact that out of this female led feminist movie, the person to receive the greatest critical acclaim is Ryan Gosling. It's just ironic that the main thing people took out of seeing Barbie was how great HE was.

omg !!! this here !!! thank you for this amazing point of view.... it's not always about white women winning awards... sometimes we can also cheer for the other side and communities... like women of First Nations who never got a nomination in the history of the Oscar and lily being the first one ever !!!!! I feel these nominations were well organized and nominated. I also do feel that poor things and flower moon where a little more strong, brave and feminist.

Poor Things surprised me. At the beginning, I wasn’t sure about Bella and the story surrounding her but when I reached the end, I realised how much she has grown. lol that is the type of story that deserves awards.

I think you guys expected Margot to do a great job as Barbie so you weren’t surprised neither noticed it when she actually did, Ryan however was absolutely underestimated and the studio bashed for casting him before the movie came out, so his performance seemed way better afterwards since ppl didn’t expect Ken to even play a significant role in the movie in the first place. His performance was great but not over exceptionally better than hers in that sense. Like she was Barbie, Barbie was her. I think Ur points are valid regarding the fact that ferera was still nominated and that other actresses had better opportunities to show off their skills and also did but I need y’all to stop making it seem like Ken was better simply bcs y’all didn’t expect Ryan to go all out

I believe the main issue here is that while the movie did receive noms, imo I don’t think the right people got noms. I don’t think Ryan Goslings performance was that profound to get a nom

I think your analysis is spot on. I loved the Barbie movie but it was very main stream. Which is great because it’s accessible and its message is going to stick with young viewers for the rest of their lives. The more prestige films with heavier material are going to fill up the big categories. It makes sense that the two supporting characters got nominated. Though Greta not getting nominated stinks. But the category was pretty stacked.

THANK YOU! I’m so glad someone else is pointing this out! If anything, the Academy is highlighting how talented both Margot and Greta are: Margot is also a producer with her own company that she co runs with her husband and Greta was a pretty good screenwriter long before she became a director. They weren’t snubbed at all. Also, Margot is a great actress, but TBH: her portrayal of Barbie, while memorable, doesn’t exactly compare to the other performances in the categories. Margot’s performances in I Tonya and even Wolf of Wall Street are more Oscar worthy.

Barbie isn’t even a good movie. Ironically, the only thing that did make it good was Ken, because Ryan Gosling made the role unique and iconic. Robbie’s performance was great but Barbie was not well-written. If you’ve ever seen a Barbie movie before, you’d understand what I mean.

I completely agree with you. This outrage is so selective, it’s nothing but mostly white women getting mad that their favs didn’t get nominated. I think Greta & Margot were deserving, but they had a lot of stiff competition and I thought those other directors and actresses deserved their nominations more. But this is my opinion. I just hate that people are making this the focus instead all of the women of color getting nominations and the impact that, that has made on the Oscars.

I loved Margot in Barbie, but it's far from her best role honestly. She's played tons of better characters IMO (Harley Quinn, Naomi from TWOWS, etc.) and I feel like Gosling was the real star of the show in the movie. Plus, major props to Lily for being the first Native American to be nominated for Best Actress!

I had an article published last week in the Star Mail (an Australian local newspaper chain) about the Oscar nominations. I addressed the Barbie controversy, praising Margot Robbie's moving, nuanced performance, suggesting that it would have been fair to nominate both Barbie and Ken, and drawing a parallel between Barbie and Argo (both films were nominated for Best Picture but their directors were not nominated for Best Director), but my article was much more concerned about Saltburn, which wasn't nominated for ANYTHING. I discussed Barry Keoghan's compelling, fearless performance and asserted that Saltburn should have been nominated for Best Cinematography (it's a BEAUTIFUL movie) and Best Original Screenplay for its witty, engrossing, really well-structured narrative. By the way, I didn't include this in the article, but I never thought Gerwig and Robbie not being nominated was sexist in nature.
@briannalee19983 ай бұрын
I do think the movie should have won best costumes and best set design, but not necessarily best director or best actress. Margot Robbie is a great actress, but the other women nominated had more challenging roles. Her best performance was in I Tonya. Lily Gladstone deserved it for sure! Congrats to her for being rewarded for her hard work and for being the first indigenous woman to get nominated and win! Poor Things and Killers of the Flower Moon deserved it. They are objectively better movies. Anatomy of a Fall and Poor Things were much deeper and had more insightful and organic takes on feminism. Not trying to knock Barbie, the movie was a blast and one f the most anticipated, but I understand why it didn’t win as many rewards against the other films.

Just so THE ZONE OF INTEREST takes that Best Picture win, we are good. What an amazing film.
@MoMo-rx4zr3 ай бұрын
zone of interest would be controversial because most of the general public only read the description and did t catch the film and it was receiving backlash for being antisemitic because nothing says antisemitism like a jewish director making a film about the indifference nazis felt to jewish suffering (sarcasm). The anglosphere doesn’t watch foreign films, and they would have the audacity to cry about it
@somewherelongago3 ай бұрын
The Zone of Interest getting a nom is a miracle within itself given its extremely odd release plan and the lack of a solid FYC campaign, relying mostly on festival hype that has already been dying down atp. It'll like win Best Foreign Film since France fumbled the bag on not submitting Anatomy of a Fall, but that basically guarantee that it will not be a serious contender in any other category

It’s not just the golden globes or even the Oscars, Ryan gosling winning over Billie eillish at the people’s choice awards is also ironic. The entire award system has ignored the plot & it’s very ironic. Idk how you can argue otherwise. It’s not a comparison against other nominees, it’s about the films women getting less recognition than the man playing Ken to which I strongly disagree was well played or even a necessary role. There was way too much Ken in a movie about Barbie first & foremost & it’s all laughably ironic.
