Is Ken an incel who's too entitled to Barbie's affection or just a lovable idiot she takes for granted? Was Barbie's original life a feminist paradise or shallow without any real meaning? Is Barbieland's matriarchy supposed to be a satire of the patriarchy or the ideal of what the real world should be? Does Barbie encourage girls to embrace the paths they want or does she encourage toxic standards for beauty and femininity? Do men benefit from the patriarchy or are they hurt by it too? I’m an Oppenheimer guy and although I like the whole Barbenheimer thing, I just wasn’t interested in watching Barbie because it appeared to be too meta and a little too corporate for my tastes. Not that I think it would be a bad movie, but it just didn’t appeal to me.
@catazoe7535 Жыл бұрын
personally i've always felt like the movie is really disjointed. i obviously like the comedy, the production, how fun and girly it is, etc. but when it attempts to be serious and deliver a message its all over the place and feels like a journey to nowhere. the only serious storytelling bit that actually works is ken's arc and even that was a little goofy. barbie definetely doesn't deserve awards for the script and that got nominated, so how anyone could say it was snubbed is beyond me. if anything, the noms where a bit too generous, even as someone that liked the movie and watched it twice. not every decent movie that you have fun watching deserves a myriad of accolades

My criticism of the movie, in very few words, is: my favorite character was Ken. My other criticism in more words: the monologue America Ferreira gives is the intended point of the film, but I don't think it hits in the context of the story. The Barbies live in a matriarchy, they don't have the point of reference of the audience living in the real world so, while the monologue is powerful and resonated with a lot of people, it's 100% preaching to the audience - which is fine, but it felt pretty shallow to me...and Ken's journey seemed more sympathetic and motivating than Barbie's so...yeah.

9 to 5 (1980) is still the ultimate feminist film and actually led to real world changes in the work place. This was back when women had real complaints. Now, it's like the aging boxer, still fighting even though they've already won.
@markpostgate2551 Жыл бұрын
Although the fact that in 1980 the phrase "9 to 5" was synonymous with a regular job indicates that many real world changes since 1980 have not been so good. Neither "working a zero hours contract/have no idea what my regular monthly income is" or "working two separate jobs/one during the day, one during the evening" are quite as catchy as lyrics! Working 9 to 5? We were lucky!

"Barbie" probably made a bazillion dollars because it tried to do so many things that viewers could see in the movie what they wanted to see in the movie. Want a feminist message? It's in there. Want a satire of a feminist message? It's in there. Want sympathy for Ken? It's in there. Want Ken ridiculed as a jerk? It's in there. Want a sentimental "Velveteen Rabbit" ending/tribute to a beloved toy? It's in there. What made "Barbie" an enormous money-maker is what works against it as a satisfying film or piece of art.

And the movie was just a lot of fun. Critics are so busy scrutinizing every tiny detail of movie that they completely lose sight of what it basically is: a piece of entertainment. It's kind of funny how much effort has been put into trying to dismiss this movie when the hard facts are a) it's full of feminist themes, b) it made a lot of money and c) both audiences and critics enjoyed it and both gave it favorable reviews. These facts are completely dissonant with certain prevailing viewpoints online.

Thank you very much for this video, Jester. My thoughts on Barbie have gotten a lot of flack recently, but you're pretty much summing up what I've said. The internet made this out to be bigger than it actually is, and that it's doing something big and new. It really isn't. It's not preachy by any means, but it's just sort of been there done that. I came out of it thinking it was ok, but it's far from great, and if I watch it again, I have a feeling my score may drop. You bought yourself a sub.

super on point with your review. the movie tried to be too many things and ended up not having a clear direction or point. It blows my mind that producers champion it as a feminist movie then have Ken being the only character with a clear arch and motivation. I don't even think America deserved a nomination with her character being so underdeveloped, the material she had to work with is not oscar worthy and the way that speech scene just came out of nowhere made me cringe, it felt so on your face. Once again, not the actress fault, just a weak script.
@nope5657 Жыл бұрын
I literally laughed out loud at Ferrera's nom. Like, the role was thankless. It's hardly a character at all, just a very cliched trope given a cringey monologue. I don't blame Ferrera or anything, she did what she could. But award worthy? Gimme a break.

It’s ridiculous that a glorified Mattel commercial is even considered a contender for the Oscars 😂 The only reward that film deserves is tricking that many people into paying to watch an ad for that long.

I think that the Oscars shouldn't be super important...... does some remember when the animated movie Big Hero 6 from Disney won as best animated movie instead of the wind rises from Studio Ghibli, WTF !! what were they thinking? besides not all people who can vote to select movies for different categories watch all the movies, that should indicate something.....

It’s unfortunate Godzilla wasn’t nominated, but Japan didn’t choose it as their submission. It still worked out though as Japan’s submission actually got the nomination.

@@Chinoiserie9839 I would say Ninja Turtles instead. Suzume was almost great but the ending didn’t really all come together like it probably should have. Also, i guess it’s a cultural thing, but can they stop having older men start a relationship with underage girls or vice versa?

The only real award considerations Barbie deserves are for production design, set design, and maybe costumes. Nothing more. People are deranged about Barbie because it was a huge hit and popularity contests make people nuts. I don't even dislike the film. I don't think Margot Robbie is bad, just nothing award worthy. Not one performance, imo, even Goslings, is award worthy. Gosling was funny as hell, but he's been funnier. If he was going to be nominated for a comedic performance it should have been for The Nice Guys, which is a FAR more layered performance. His role as Ken is pretty one-note. Again, not bad - just at one-note. If we want to play the representation game, there are SO MANY female directed films from 2023 that were great but virtually ignored because they were super limited releases, streaming only, or genre films like comedy and horror. Polite Society, Bottoms, Past Lives, Birth/Rebirth, Rye Lane, Huersera the Bone Woman, all female directed and female driven films. All fantastic. All (Past Lives excluded) ignored. Just because Barbie is a huge hit that happens to be directed by a woman doesn't mean it needs accolades it doesn't deserve. What I hate most about todays film discourse is that everyone grafts their personal politics onto something immediately and puts the politics of a film first and the art a distant, DISTANT second. Just because Barbie is saying all the "right" things, doesn't mean it's doing it well. And let's not forgot that all of these deranged takes are ignoring Gladstones ACTUALLY historic nomination for an ACTUALLLY great performance.

I found it hard to get mad at the movie because it was so mid. Harmless, and frequently salvaged by Gosling's balls-out Ken, but often dreary for a comedy. Not to mention the "message" was pretty clunky, but again I just couldn't take it seriously enough to take offense. In fact, I kind of expected a stronger feminist bent given the subject matter and writer/director. It's not even a discussion that Barbie was less interesting than Ken

I should also say that I saw it in a mostly full theater with a lot of women and teenage girls, and the biggest reactions (laughs) I hear came from me and my two (male) friends. A couple of moments got reactions from the entire auditorium but I mostly felt I enjoyed it more than most people in there

The best way I can sum it up is: Of the current list: Best Actress & Best Director noms -- who of them should get cut, in order for Margot & Greta to get a place? Harsh reality is: NONE. Everyone already nominated deserves their spot. After finally watching Barbie, a couple weeks ago, to seeing this situation blow up. I'm firmly on the side of the ppl who agree that both Margot & Greta DIDN'T deserve a nomination. Margot has given way better performances. Greta, while stylized in this film, I don't think anything particularly stood out as "WOW" or thought-provoking for her to get a "Best director" nom. Even hotter take: I don't think America Ferrera deserves the Best Supporting actress nomination either. I think she's nominated solely on that speech she gives in the movie...& it didn't move me or my mom or sister (we all watched Barbie together). My mom fell asleep during a portion of it. me & my sister kept looking at eachother like "What was all the hype about??" The only thing all 3 of us agreed on: Ryan's Ken was the best part of the entire movie & his character ACTUALLY HAD CHRACTER. We all felt more for Ken & his journey than we did for ANY of the Barbies 😂.

This bait and switch propaganda movie, Barbie is 'confusing' because it's written for a liberal 1984/brave new world audience. If you are not entirely immersed into that world, then of course you'll be 'confused' and perplexed by it's not so subtle doublethink fundament. Like all these movies, they are made for a very young, and not very sophisticated audience where 'nuance' might be confused for subliminals. Make no mistake, the movie was intended to be ultra-feminist, and LGTBQIA supporting, rather than satirical, with a large dose of accompanying vengeance and hatred for 'the patriarchy' always seething right underneath the surface. Also, for the academy awards, it's called 'working the refs'. Fanatics.

My friends sent me a lot of messages about how horrible it was that Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie didn't get nominations, but I didn't think the movie itself deserved nominations for best picture or best screenplay. And Ryan Gosling is really the star of the movie, he's the one who really shines, and America Ferrara is more relatable and engaging than Barbie as a character. But I felt like I wasn't getting something, that I was missing something about the movie, so thank you for this video.

Nice take! I absolutely agree with what you said and also gained new insights, for which I thank you. I also think that the target audience of this movie is way too broad. An older person can appreciate and enjoy a movie aimed at children because of how it skilfully and intelligently addresses them, while integrating some pearls only adults can truly appreciate. But Barbie is a mash-up of messages and jokes with recipients ranging from adults to toddlers, with "Pingu", "Winx Club", "The Simpsons" and "Little Women" type contents sharing the same space, constantly breaking the flow for those, like me and my adolescent niece, who were simply hoping to enjoy a lighthearted and nostalgic celebration of our childhood. I do understand wanting to deal with the controversies surrounding Barbie throughout its history, but isn't it hypocritical and contradictory to criticise a product launched into the market to defy the status quo, for not being revolutionary enough? Wasn't that little step brave enough considering its historical context? Isn't the only clear message here not to submit to the pressure of unrealistic expectations? Barbie surely isn't perfect, but its introduction did play a little role in liberating girls from some of the narrow spaces the idea of womanhood was forced into. The level of wisdom of this movie is, in my opinion, that of an adolescent complaining about how unfair the world is, still blind to how complex and complicated evolution can be.

I just think, after months of sitting on it, that Barbie is a completely mid-tier movie. All politics and opinions aside, the plotline and acting hasn't stuck with me at all. It was lackluster even (considering its hype) and maybe an unpopular opinion: but I don't think ANYONE involved with that movie deserved an oscar nom lol. I think the academy threw Barbie a few bones to Gosling and Ferrera just so people wouldn't be TOO pissed, but I don't think it'll actually take home any wins.

The thing is: everyone who's honest with the world should know that the Oscars were NEVER about talent and deserving. Even when the nominations and winners are fairly chosen, they are there because they attend to some social rules that do NOT represent what it means to be a high quality job. So, I find it funny when people say movies like Barbie or people from minorities get "undeserved" nominations only to please the internet because the nominations were ALWAYS about pleasing people. And everyone knows it. So, even if you think the movie didn't deserve the nominations based on quality, you have to admit that nominating Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera (which is a whole other talk), nominating the movie for script and BEST PICTURE, and just leaving out Greta and Margot it's just WEIRD and PROVES the point the movie makes. And yes, the movie has a point to make and makes it in a very clever way, so yes I disagree with the negative critics. But that's not the point here. The point is: no, it's not a good thing.
