A beautiful, but poignant contrast in two extremely talented careers…one at the very beginning, the other about to end. Sad when you think about it, but a lovely & powerful duet when you just listen to it.

This was a smashup of two songs. Happy Days Are Here Again was from Streisand’s regular repertoire. Get Happy was a song Garland often sang. Tremendous arrangement, this! (Smashup is really not the appropriate description, considering how beautifully they paired together. Haha)

I remember watching this on tv! All these years and musical lessons I have learned, these women had to retard their vocals (hold their volume down) because if they began the song in full voice the monitors around the world would shatter! This makes me so happy, thank you for adding some cheer to a dreary day. Lol, Jimmy Durante had a show! I remember watching that with my grandparents. So much great music under the bridges. I have sung "Over the Rainbow" to my granddaughter every day since she was born, she will be two in August, and it calms her tantrums right down. Music does indeed hath charms to soothe the savage beast!

Few things bring greater joy to me than hearing/watching brilliant singers, especially female singers. When one is blessed with a performance by two of the best singing together so beautifully and masterfully, joy transforms into ecstasy, and is almost a sensation overload. These moments are among the best aspects of being human.

Yes most of the big ticket names of the time had a variety show of their own at one time or another. Judy's was the culmination of her final super high peak after she had received an Oscar nomination for Judgement in Nuremburg a few years before. The program is filled with brilliance since every performer of quality was anxious to appear with her, a legendary live performer as well as in films and TV she was commonly referred to as Miss Show Business. This appearance by Barbra who was very much on the rise but hadn't appeared in films yet was a sort of meeting of greats in flight-Barbra on the ascendant and Judy (whose show despite the quality of it was short-lived since it was programmed against the most popular show on TV at the time-Bonanza) very soon on the decline though she remained a superstar name until her death. The 100th anniversary of her birth is this June 10th when undoubtedly they will be an outpouring of tributes. One that I know is coming is a special two day showing of "The Wizard of Oz" (she of course was Dorothy) across the United States in commemoration. There is an absolutely mesmerizing performance of "Old Man River" from the series where Judy just staggers with her powerful interpretive gift. Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3i4gWqYqKmDjsk

Happy Days are Here Again was a Depression song, associated with Franklin Roosevelt's campaigns for office. This duet was done on Garland's Sunday night show. Garland was worshipped by her generation and having parents of that age (Depression and WW2). Judy's show was a central event. The duet is an iconic performance and at the time, some said this was the passing of the torch from Garland to Streisand. There is also a duet of Garland and her daughter Liza Minelli which was amazing but I'm not sure it was on Garland's weekly show or one of her specials. Anyway, variety shows were very popular in the 50s and 60s, and to have great stars willing to host them was a bonus. There were other singers who had shows like Tom Jones which boosted their fame in the U.S. It was not like Sinatra or Dean Martin or Garland who had already performed for decades.

It's funny because I'm 78 years old and I've known these two great singers my entire life. I heard Streisand at the Bon Soir, one of her first singing gigs she was barely 18 and opening for Phyllis Diller (of all people!) and she was as exciting then as she remains today. No singer, so far, in the 60 years of her performing, has ever reached or equaled her voice and talent. You know a good singer when they can take a famous standard song and make it their own, put a spin on it that no one has ever done before. I look around at the female singers today and none have that ability. Ever hear Beyonce sing "over the rainbow" or "happy days" and take it away from Garland and Streisand? No, She is good at pop songs, as was Streisand if you listen to her 70's songs, but Streisand is more than a pop singer, Streisand is a classic. You won't remember Beyonce in 30-40 years but people will still be discovering Barbra Streisand. She sings in German, French and Portuguese and were BIG hits in those countries despite that fact that few of us here in the U.S. even knew that and the woman is Jewish!. It's her talent that hasn't been equaled. She can be funny as hell and make you cry like a baby with little effort. She's 80 now, her voice a little smokey but she can still fill a stadium. She recently did a NetFlix special and I was astounded at the size of the audience because it went on and on and on. People were on their feet again and again. I am so pleased to have grown up with her, her talents and her voice.

BTW, I'm old and I remember a lot of things that are rarely repeated about Streisand. When in high school she joined the Chorus, they didn't call it Choir back then. She was born with perfect pitch and was continually complaining to the Chorus teacher about how so many group songs were off-key. The teacher eventually asked her to leave the Chorus. She moved out of her mother's apartment just before her 18th birthday and moved in with two roommates, a male and a female. She was and remains incredibly stage frightened but determined to enter show business using her voice. The first song she ever sung before her roommates was "A Sleepin Bee" and to sing it she had to face the kitchen wall. She entered a singing contest at the Lion, a Greenwich village (I think) nightclub and there she won, hands down. That led to an audition at the Bon Soir and everything is history after that. She is very small, maybe 5'4". I met her once, just briefly, while she was filming "What's up Doc" in SF. She was staying at the Clift Hotel and I had a good friend who was a bellhop/clerk/waiter. He let me into the kitchen area and we waited by the freight elevator for a long time before the doors opened and there she was, flanked by two men I think were her producers or agents because they didn't strike me as bodyguards. She was holding her little white dog, Sammy, whom she adored and she was somewhat rude or disappointed when she saw Mike and myself standing in her way. But she was nice and I gushed like a fan-boy and started to cry because I adored her so much. She walked passed us but nodded, said nothing, and went down to the garage area where she got into a big car and drove away. We followed her all the way out and I kept waving like an idiot. My friend Mike appears at the very end of "What's Up Doc" and he was thrilled to get the job/part. He plays a security guard carrying the case of jewels which are the object of the picture. Mike was a bigger fan of Streisand than I was and followed her career continuously until he passed away in the early 80's. He was an amazing artist and worked/traveled with Liza Minnelli and Cleo Laine (an English Singer), throughout Europe for years and would call me at 3-4am and we'd talk until I had to get up and go to work. I remember when she married Elliot Gould and had Jason, her son. Of course I have every song she has ever sung but still surprised to see interviews, mostly European, I didn't see at the time they were made. She has been a great part of my life and it would break my heart if she were to pass away before I do.

@@personalcheeses8073 This performance is Oct. 1963. Judy is only 41. She died June 22, 1969, just after her 47th birthday (June 10). Sadly, she came to Hollywood at a time the studios & managers worked people into the ground & the "doctors to the stars" happily prescribed uppers & downers, anything needed to get up early, work long hours, sleep & repeat it, over & over. Back then (really, till about the mid-60s), it wasn't even considered drug abuse/addiction, because a doctor prescribed it. Add in excessive alcohol use, that "everybody" was doing & the combo took a heavy toll on a lot of performers of her day.

Just my opinion, Streisand can Never hold a candle to Judy Garland. She is held by most as the greatest entertainer of the 20th century. It's not just that her voice is beyond amazing, that would be proof enough, but her heart and soul that only she can display in her voice is the combination that makes her head and shoulders above Streisand any day of the week giving All of herself in every note. Nothing against Barbra, but there are people who sing, and there are Singers. Big difference. Nothing can add to an artist like having gone through life's tough difficulties and coming out stronger for it and it coming out in performances with all their soul with a richness and depth that mere knowing how to sing can't bring. Check out this clip from her last film, I Could go on Singing, called Hello Bluebird. and you'll see what I mean. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqLKaoCLg9yLeJo

I agree with you 100%.yes Babs is great and can hit all the high notes but Judy voice when a young girl and even later in her career is ethereal. Her sound, vibrato belting and quiet voice is superior to Babs not to forget her raw emotion. On this duet you forget Judy is 20 years older than Barbra but easily holds her own with the upcoming megastar!
