Yes, a huge victim of the studio system...and her mother. Uppers to get thru the day, downers to help her sleep. All gifts from the studios. She was looked on as an asset to market and make money for. Nontheless, one of the greatest talents ever to grace stage and screen. So glad you are doing one of the all time legends from the past. Her career spanned 40 years. "The Man that Got Away" is a torch song & was used in the 1954 version of the film "A Star Is Born". I think everyone has seen the classic movie "The Wizard Of Oz" where she sung "Over The Rainbow". Hard to believe she was only 17 years of age (83 years ago). A lot of the singers today can't hold a candle to her talent.

Great choice, Harri! I've been a huge Judy Garland fan since I first read a biography of her in 1975 when I was 13. And my favorite film of all time is Judy's "Meet Me in St. Louis" (1944), which I also saw for the first time that same year. You nailed it when you said her voice had power, vulnerability and emotion.

Love how you point out the excellence of the band! I feel that Judy's greatness really challenged the orchestras which accompanied her, regardless of their own abilities or fame. There are recordings with drummers, trumpet players, pianists, etc, playing out of their heads, and Judy can still be heard above them. As you state, incredible power from her diaphragm, as well as perfected breathing techniques, and vocal chords which were conditioned to singing powerfully, lightly, and sustainably. Add to that other-wordly mix, Judy possessed a throb, almost a vocal, musical cry which brought emotion and depth to her performances. Judy is an experience, one that I never tire of.

In the early 1960s my older sister had a double (vinyl) album Judy at Carnegie Hall. I loved listening to it. I was able to find it on CD a few years ago. If you enjoy her music, you should give it a listen to. I love your reactions. Thank you for sharing.

What a fitting choice! This upcoming Friday June 10th marks what would have been Judy's 100th birthday! This is the initial performance of what became one of her signature songs (though Somewhere Over the Rainbow remained her key song) and was written especially for her by Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin. A Star is Born has been remade twice since this (and this was a remake of the original 1937 film-a non-musical that starred Fredric March and Janet Gaynor) once in the 70's with Barbra Streisand (even though I'm an enormous Streisand fan it's an awful film) and recently with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga (better than the Babs version but not as good as Judy's). A word of warning about this one. After it was released the studio wanted to add more showings so cut out crucial parts of the film, it was restored in the 80's but some of that footage was lost though the entire soundtrack was found. To compensate stills from the lost scenes were inserted over the dialog portions (it doesn't last too long but it helps to be prepared when watching so they aren't as jarring.) To explore her work further I'd recommend both her performance of "Old Man River" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" from her 60's television show. By the way Liza is pronounced Lie-za not Lee-za.

This is a clip from the movie “A Star Is Born”. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance ( she was robbed”. But most singer would lip sync to the playback, but not her… no matter how many takes they would do, she would belt it out along with the playback. People on the set would just stop and watch.. said it was like a concert

I remember hearing the comedian Alan King talk about opening for Ms. Garland, I think in Vegas. He said he'd watch from the wings & get goosebumps as this song started up & she began the show with it. I think it's one of her very best & maybe my personal favorite. I recall reading that Garland’s performance of this song from the 1954 motion picture, A Star is Born was shot sans rehearsal and made with one take. I have never thought of a comparison between Judy and Billie Holiday. Great connection. If I may suggest something, Liza Minnelli has a song called 'Liza With A Z' from her television special of the same name. You may want to check that out. The song was written be her great friends Kander and Ebb who wrote the score of Cabaret. But your openness as you're listening is very refreshing. First time viewer but I have now subscribed and looking forward to wandering through previous videos. Thank you. I had chills running down my arms as Judy sang. Great memory. Judy was nominated for the Academy Award for A Star Is Born but lost out to Grace Kelly for The Country Girl. Makes sense. Grace would marry Prince Ranier and become a real life princess, Princess Grace of Monaco. In that era wouldn't you have wanted to be invited in. I can hear the gushing: "oh, Grace, I voted for you" in hopes of wangling an invitation to the wedding. Judy received an Oscar for Best Child performance for The Wizard Of Oz. Speed back in the day must have been pure and powerful. No wonder so many artists became addicted to it, especially when MDs were recommending/prescribing it for energy back in the 30s-60s. Those vintage mainstream magazine ads for pills that equaled pure jet fuel were profound. they usually showed a frazzled housewife before and a dazzling beauty afterward.
