It’s half live sadly, really wish she had performed the second half live as the first half while she’s crying is so moving. This closing scene of the movie clinched her Oscar win. For all the other reasons the Academy loved it, the Academy has always prized an ability to cry actual tears, on camera. These days, it's almost a lost part of the art of acting.

It is scenes like this that demonstrate why Streisand is a legend. At the AFI Awards, she explained that she recorded the complete song a month or so before filming, same as virtually all Hollywood musicals, and everyone liked it……except HER! She felt that it needed to be done live for emotional effect. The first part is sung live, the second part is lipsynched to the tape from the movie-score sessions. It was definitely not taken from her older My Name is Barbra record! Her voice had matured somewhat in those three years, and she’s ahead of the beat in the earlier version, consistently on-the-beat in the movie version. Either way, it’s an extraordinary moment from a unique performer with a legendary voice.

@@sobebenjSo now that you’ve read her memoirs, you’ll know that the second part was pre-recorded, with Walter Scharf (the film’s conductor) a month before filming began. They certainly did NOT use an older recording for the picture. I don’t know how the rumors get started.

@GA-1st Жыл бұрын
Wow. Barbra is brilliant. A total, artistic performance. She’s without peer, really. But it’s the genius of William Wyler in this scene that’s underappreciated and too often overlooked. Here's my purely subjective analysis: Wyler starts the song by placing Barbra directly in front of two columns of lighted stage decoration, not only setting basic spatial orientation of her on stage, but symbolically representing the emotional pillars she needs to follow through with a performance in her fragile state. 0:08 As she struggles her way to the end the recitative first stanza, Wyler cuts to a different angle, and the columns shift to the stage right of the frame - our left - and she proceeds to enter the second stanza. Her reliance upon the support is diminishing.0:59. As she surrenders herself ever more into the song, she reaches a key lyrical point of self-abandonment - "...But I don’t care, when he takes me in his arms....” - and the columns are removed entirely from the frame as Wyler shifts the camera to our left. This, of course, eliminates any spatial orientation, and figuratively represents that the columns have become superfluous. This places Barbra in virtual darkness (with only low-key lighting of her face and hands from above), as she raises her arms in rapturous anticipation of her man. 1:48 With each successive line, she increasingly loses any sense of self, to the point where she actually disappears from view. Quick fade to black. 2:04 And they say Wyler was just a craftsmen. Yeah, right...

What I wouldn't give to see/hear the entire live version filmed instead of this 'half-live' version. Barbra thought her full live version was good.

Oh man, makes me sad to know it was recorded and not used. I assumed she mimed to the second half of the recording as the lip-synching is great. Do we know for sure there was a live performance for that second half? Curious to hear where you read she liked it and why it wasn’t used.
