What's funny is Barbara Streisand wasn't scheduled to appear. She just happened to be in her car near the studio, and asked the driver to stop, and made it before the skit was over. Their shocked reaction is genuine. The magic of live TV.

This was around the time Mick Jagger publicly said she had a voice like Minnie Mouse on helium. Madonna said in an interview she'd met Barbra Streisand and she had been really nice to her, and just said, "go for it kid". At that time she was possibly the only major talent to be supportive of her....

I liked her performance in Evita but not that one speaking part. It felt so unnatural. The only time I ever found Madonna to be natural at acting was in Who’s That Girl. Now, the character was way over the top but she was supposed to be. Think of her as a Harley Quinn prototype. Madonna should have worked with that director more often because he was able to get her to be an actress.

Mike Myers is GOLD. Madonna does some of her best acting in this scene. Myer’s and Madonna’s response to Streisand’s walk on cameo is fabulous. I remember watching this live back in ‘92 and I never knew until later that Streisand’s appearance was not scheduled. It’s a SNL legendary moment for sure! I miss these SNL moments.

I loved this when it originally aired. Roseanne was the host, so even Madonna doing this sketch was a surprise, because she was not billed, and did nothing else on the show that night. And of course, Barbra's totally unexpected appearance is just amazing.

Streisand thought about a duet on her Back to Broadway Album in 1993 -- 2 yrs after this, it was going to be madonna or bette midler, but she already was doing 2 duets on the album and opted NOT to do a third. She later recoreded the would be song with Melissa McCarthy in 2016 -- Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better.

that never happened. this episode was in 1992. streisand sang pop from 1972 until 1984, when she announced she was 'returning to her roots' and just singing broadway and traditional. Madonna came on the scene in 1984 and became HUGE POP ICON. The music was all dance oriented, not anything streisand in her mid 40s was interested in. In 1993 it was suggested that they sing a duet - anything you can do i can do better - on streisand's back to broadway album, but it was a national enquire rumour. madonna was never asked. also by 1993 madonna was really in a career slump, her reign was over, Celine, Mariah and Houston were more in the spot like for like 2-3 yrs.

Streisand cleared up the mystery in her memoir. She was the honoree for an award, so she was already in New York. She attended a Saturday night Broadway show, and called Lorne Michaels to congratulate him about a recent movie. He asked her to stop by and make a cameo appearance in a skit about her. She refused because she doesn’t do impromptu stuff like that. But she stopped by anyway, and waited until the last moment to decide if she’d go on. She said Mike Myers knew there was a slight possibility, but Madonna and Roseanne had no idea.

My friend has a friend who worked on the crew of SNL. We were in NYC the night this show was on. Her friend invited us to the after-party. We debated, but it was late and we ended up deciding not to go. The next day, we found out that Madonna and Barbra were both there!

She did try comedy - did you see Who’s That Girl? It was awful. Desperately Seeking Susan had launched her acting career quite successfully, but then Shanghai Surprise and Who’s That Girl came along and nearly derailed her acting career. It wasn’t that she was a bad comedic actor, but rather that the movies were just terrible. That’s probably why she went for more dramatic roles after that.
