One of the all-time greatest SNL moments. The reactions by Myers, Madonna and Roseanne--priceless!

Yeah, because they had no idea she would show up. She was giving a show across the street at Radio City and wanted to give everyone a surprise since 30 Rock is just a short walk from where she was. Even the crowd went nuts. Amazing that they all were able to somewhat stay in character after that.

Madonna actually has good comedic timing. She was just rarely offered the right roles. Barbra's appearance here is legendary. She was so fond of this skit that she had Mike bring the character on tour with her.

I've long thought that Madonna cannot let her guard down, is too self conscious in roles to embrace her characters, thus comes off stiff. And, that this is the best acting I've seen her perform, by far.

Way back in the 80's when Madonna was shooting to the top, many established stars and singers would diss her and her singing abilities. This was around the time Mick Jagger publicly said she had a voice like Minnie Mouse on helium. Madonna said in an interview she'd met Barbra Streisand and she had been really nice to her, and just said, "go for it kid". At that time she was possibly the only major talent to be supportive of her....

What's funny is Barbara Streisand wasn't scheduled to appear. She just happened to be in her car near the studio, and asked the driver to stop, and made it before the skit was over. Their shocked reaction is genuine. The magic of live TV.

That was a thousand years ago when she was still very much her own self, before she even bought her first record contract by paying the studio. @@missweatherorweathernot7870 WRONG ! Madonna was 100% PERFECT and she absolutely NAILED that drop dead funny parody, which was an instant classic !!! It was MEANT to be that far over the top. She wasn't playing Mike Myers character, she was playing another, very well known stereotype that really is that outrageous. Comedy is about reality , exaggerated to make it funny. If the reality is hilarious to begin with, then the parody has to be that much more exaggerated to show the absurdity. Your comment is just as inane as your dumb reply that "Snowbirds are canadians". Duh. Maybe buy a sense of humor. You can pick one up dirt cheap from any street vendor in NYC, because most people already have one, and those who don't, are too unfunny to know it. Stay the hell out of comedy clubs in NYC and LA, or they'll eat you alive. You seriously need an edumacation in drop dead funny parodies and caricatures of stereotypes, so you can stop ignorantly try to pick it apart, just to sound like a smartass and trying to dissect them with the scalpel of ignorance. You're not that smart and you sure as f* ck ain't funny.

@Lost Vocals Mike Myers did NOT know she was gonna come on. Barbara very pointedly said : "So nobody knew I was gonna do it. Mike Myers knew I might come on........". You do understand the difference between "might come on " and " will come on', right? Exactly what part of " Nobody knew I was gonna do it," did you not understand??? Duh. That is precisely why he WAS TOTALLY SURPRISED and showed it ! The sketch was over at that point , and he very likely had given up thinking she was coming on at all. He's been in awe of her and was obviously totally shocked when she suddenly appeared out of nowhere at the last second. Stop trying to be a smartass, dude, his surprise was very genuine. You're making it sound like it was just an act. He was just as surprised and in shock, as the girls. Please work on your reading comprehension, and maybe buy a new pair of eyes.

I liked her performance in Evita but not that one speaking part. It felt so unnatural. The only time I ever found Madonna to be natural at acting was in Who’s That Girl. Now, the character was way over the top but she was supposed to be. Think of her as a Harley Quinn prototype. Madonna should have worked with that director more often because he was able to get her to be an actress.

She did try comedy - did you see Who’s That Girl? It was awful. Desperately Seeking Susan had launched her acting career quite successfully, but then Shanghai Surprise and Who’s That Girl came along and nearly derailed her acting career. It wasn’t that she was a bad comedic actor, but rather that the movies were just terrible. That’s probably why she went for more dramatic roles after that.

NEVER HAPPENED. that never happened. this episode was in 1992. streisand sang pop from 1972 until 1984, when she announced she was 'returning to her roots' and just singing broadway and traditional. Madonna came on the scene in 1984 and became HUGE POP ICON. The music was all dance oriented, not anything streisand in her mid 40s was interested in. In 1993 it was suggested that they sing a duet - anything you can do i can do better - on streisand's back to broadway album, but it was a national enquire rumour. madonna was never asked. also by 1993 madonna was really in a career slump, her reign was over, Celine, Mariah and Houston were more in the spot like for like 2-3 yrs.
